Evil for Evil is the tenth book in Deb Pines' traditional whodunit Chautauqua Mysteries featuring the wise and witty reporter sleuth of a certain age Mimi Goldman.
"An Agatha Christie for the text-message age," IndieReader calls the series.
When Emmy Diner, a true-crime podcaster who champions the cases of forgotten victims, is killed at a Chautauqua book club meeting, she could use her own champion.
The police don’t suspect foul play. Everyone present — including Emmy’s boozing brother-in-law, artsy best friend and an ex-love interest, plus a local minister, musician, nurse, preschool teacher and cleaner — seems harmless.
Luckily, reporter and relentless snoop Mimi Goldman is at the meeting, too. New to the book club but not to solving murders in the historic, cottage-filed, leafy, lakeside summer arts community of Chautauqua, Mimi Might Emmy have been a threat to someone from one of her cold cases? Or the target of a more recent rival? Or was her death something entirely different?
With help from her 90-year-old sidekick Sylvia, Mimi digs in, gradually realizing one terrifying the book club members can't be judged by their covers.
Fans of Agatha Christie, Louise Penny, Elly Griffiths and "Only Murders in the Building" will enjoy this twist-filled mystery one early reviewer called "an unputdownable triumph."
A Brooklyn, NY, native who grew up in Miami Beach, Fla., Deb Pines writes mysteries by day and award-winning tabloid headlines for the New York Post by night.
A Brown University grad, Deb was also a reporter at the New York Law Journal, Indianapolis Star and various other publications before she got bitten by the mystery-writing bug.
Her 2013 debut Mimi Goldman mystery, set in the Chautauqua Institution in far Western NY State, IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH, has been called "required reading" (NY Post), "perfect . . . if you enjoy an old-fashioned whodunit" (Post-Journal of Jamestown, NY) and "a truly fun quick-witted mystery with an engaging protagonist and array of other memorable characters. With a dash of romance and history, it's the perfect read for a summer getaway -- and a page-turner in any season." (Goodreads).
It's available on Amazon.com along with her 2023 novel EVIL FOR EVIL and earlier works: WICKED SCHEMES, A PLAGUE AMONG U , CROOKED PATHS, FRUIT OF LIES, VENGEANCE IS MINE, BESIDE STILL WATERS, DELIVER US FROM EVIL and her 2014 novelette, WHERE'S THE BEEF?, all set in Chautauqua, too.
Deb, a grandmother, is also a SoulCycle indoor cycling fanatic, cook, hiker, music lover and former Mystery Writers of America committee chair in New York City where she lives with her husband Dave.
This is first book in series I read, I know it’s 10th in the series but I got if free through Amazon. I felt no connection to these characters and honestly, there were too many to keep track of at beginning of book. It provided a list of characters at beginning and on an ebook that makes it a pain to go back to try to figure out who was who.
In addition, I thought the murder was a bit odd, someone sleeping upstairs while a book club meeting was going on? Injected with something while they were sleeping but did not wake up when someone touched them?
Just not believable so I felt confused from the start and had a hard time telling who main characters were until end of book. Not my cup of tea. Not enough to make me go back and catch up on series, sorry.

A nice puzzle in an interesting cultural enclave, peppered with comfortably familiar characters , this story will entertain those at leisure without straining their ability to suspend disbelief greatly. The author has first-hand experience with the life of reporters, so the intrusive nosiness of the protagonist rings true, though Mimi doesn’t in this novel run afoul of professional law enforcement, nor does she seem to face grave danger very much. The worst she seems to encounter is entertaining tongue-lashings and a couple of displayed guns. It’s a worthwhile read for relaxation.
When Emmy Diner, a prolific podcaster, is found murdered following a bookclub meeting, in Chautauqua, a local amateur detective, Mimi, sets about to discover how and why Emmy died. With the assistance of Emmy mother in law she gathers all the salient facts and follows up on possible suspects before finally bringing the culprit to justice. A highly emotional book which grips you from start to finish.
Probably not the type of book I would seek out, but it did the intended job, sending me off peacefully like a mug of Ovaltine. Having said that it was well plotted and held my interest.
