A one, a two, a three. You count: a one, a five, a six. You count a seven, eight, nine, eleven. And they have this big [spoiler alert] gingerbread house at the end, and it pops up. And they have lots of mice in this book, and that's why there's mice on the cover. And I'll tell you why it's called “Cookie Count”: because the mice bake cookies! First there's only two, then there's lots at the end, and that must be the mice's home: the gingerbread house.

This pop-up book was so much fun. Especially fun because it was read to me by someone who's good at it. The pop-ups are intricate and invite close inspection. It's a counting book. With mice. And cookies. By Sabuda. What more do you need to know? A pure delight, in every possible way. Though if I had a toddler of my own, I'd buy two copies, one for the toddler to love to death in 4 minutes, one for me to read from just far enough away that the toddler couldn't reach.

This book has beautiful, intricate pop-ups that invite close study. It's a bit small compared to other books I've read by the author, and is better suited for sharing with an individual child than reading to a large group.

Update: I read this for my food-themed storytime today, and the kids and adults seemed to enjoy it. I had a small enough group that I could make sure everyone had a chance to clearly see the pages, and people loved the final page with the gingerbread house.

Most people assume this is a Christmas book, it's not. It's just a general cookie book about mice baking lots of different tasty cookies! I never have any trouble with kids when I bring pop-up and other other novelty books to a story time. The promise of reading one gets me a chance to read other, "ordinary" books! Seriously, I love introducing young children and new readers to various types of books to spur their interest in reading. If it takes a pop-up, so be it! This is a fun one that will pair will cookie, mice, even cat story times! Sabuda rules!

This stunning pop-up book is the epitome of paper engineering. This is not for children’s hands. This is a great read-aloud for young ones learning to count. Also, little ones will like the rhyming words.

At my baby shower, a friend gave me a pile of books she found in a little free library, and damn if they weren't all winners! This book holds the distinction as the first book Reed destroyed. It's a great book for babies because there's lots of color and movement and things to grab. Ergo -- our copy's toast.

Found this one while the missus and I were staying at my grandparents' old boathouse. Definitely on the more ornate side of the pop-up-book which is impressive, but also makes it easier for bebe to make a mess of. Adorable mice, baked goods, and pop-up: I'm in.

Not just a Christmas book but great to share with a story time cookie or mice theme...even a cat story time. The pop up page with fortune cookie even has fortunes. Something new to notice with each reading. Thank you Robert Sabuda!

12/8/22 - "Cookies" themed storytime. A hit with the kiddos; I had to coach them not to reach for the tasty looking pop-ups. Great counting fun!

The pop ups are incredible, this is a work of art. My daughter is 18 months so at the minute I have to help her be very gentle with the pages but she domes looking at it. I don't know how good it is at teaching her to count but I think once she starts to get the idea there is plenty to hold her attention!

You can't go too wrong with pop-up books for storytime, because kids just love them, and Cookie Count: A Tasty Pop-up is a particularly stunning book. It's also a counting book, so it's suitable for very young kids (though I wouldn't share a pop-up this intricate with babies and others likely to damage it), but the art is enough to entertain older children despite the simple text. I shared this book as part of a food-related storytime, but you could easily have a cookie storytime with this book, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and The Cow Loves Cookies. This could also be good for a counting storytime, so I'd really recommend this purchase for your library.

After singing "The More We Get Together" (naming everyone by fours or eights--we had over forty children today) and doing actions to "Hello, everybody--let's clap our hands", begin with this dazzling pop-up. After all, cookies are "icky-sticky". By the way, some of our actions to "hello everybody" were pantomiming licking a lollipop (fun illiteration) and then pantomiming washing our icky-sticky hands.

We just got this in the mail as an early Christmas gift from Aunt Laurie, Kaity loved it! She liked finding all the mice and LOVED all the different facets of a pop-up book. The illustrations and craftwork are AMAZING! I'd heard good things about Sabuda, but up until now I haven't been able to get my hands on one. Speaking of hands, this book is a little delicate so it will be on a HIGH shelf to avoid unsupervised little hands.

Wonderful and beautiful pop-up for counting to 10! I love concept books that are engaging and exciting. You can not even wait to turn the pages with this one, each page is more beautiful than the last and when you get to ten and see the gingerbread house, it really is magical! I would use this as a special treat book in my classroom and bring it out during center time when students have been on task that day!

My sister started buying Robert Sabuda pop-up books for her kids a couple of years ago, and we all had fun reading them. Some of the structures he creates are amazing. Cookie Count is simpler than some of his other books but it still has very colorful, intricate pop-ups, and it's a great way to get a child to learn his or her numbers.

This is one of my Christmas favorites. How can you go wrong with the combination of cookies and a pop-up? As a bonus, this doubles as a counting book, but be sure to protect the pop-up by having little ones sit on your lap while readying. You’ll love the little mice who sample the cookies and likely be inspired to get out your favorite cookie recipes!

We were given this book about 6 years ago and it's amazing that it's still basically intact. It's a pop up book of the truly fancy kind (I think all of Robert Sabuda's books are). Not for tiny children, but you can teach them to be careful w/ this one. We love it!

AMAZING pop-up pictures! I especially love the "7 Linzer hearts divine" and the gingerbread house at the end! MAGICAL how it turns 3-D! This book is a pop-up - therefore only for CAREFUL, GENTLE children!
