Writing this review two years later, but I remember it well so it should be fine, because for me this textbook stands out as an exceptional resource for anyone wanting to start studying Mandarin Chinese (particularly those in higher education settings, whom these textbooks were originally written for).

This book is a great resource for covering fundamental grammar rules, with diverse vocabulary, and practical language skills. The clear explanations and exercises make learning Chinese both accessible and enjoyable, and the inclusion of cultural insights and real-life scenarios provide a deeper understanding of the language and culture.

The combination of this with the textbooks interactive multimedia resources, caters to a variety of learning styles, making it suitable for both classroom instruction and self-study (I used it for both).

It is however important to remember that this book has more emphasis specifically on improving your reading comprehension, and it is better to start using the resource with that in mind.

I got through this book because it was mandatory for university study.

I use the term "got through" because despite it being educational, for me at least there was no way that this coursebook contained enough context, especially in the grammar sections. I by no means expected one book to be the saving grace of my degree and guide me through everything, but at times I found the lessons to be a random mix of vocab that didn't tie in very well. For example, theres a lesson that explains words like, "Wedding, marriage, camera" which you could just about make a story out of, but it then also confusingly contains, "Underground railroad, residential district" which feels like a seperate topic altogether.

I don't want to be too critical because I absolutely did learn a lot from this course. But if it wasn't for the fact I was being pushed by tutors as well, I'd have stopped a long while ago. If you are self studying, much better courses exist.
