Ferris Wheel offers a selection of tanka that infuse a thoroughly modern sensibility into one of Japan's oldest literary forms. Many of the tanka selected and translated by Kozue Uzawa and Amelia Fielden for this volume have never appeared in English translation.
Some of these poems (31 syllables, 5 lines of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7) don't feel that powerful in English. I'm wondering if something gets lost in the translations or if it's just a limitation of the form itself.
