Red Lights Shakko: Selected Tanka Sequences from Shakko

Rate this book
Red Lights by Mokichi Saito (1882-1953), who was a major Japanese tankaist, continued the trend in bringing new life to tanka. Sbakko, translated as Red Lights, appeared in 1913. This collection of tanka created an immediate sensation in Japan as it introduced into this venerable art form the modern note of a rich variety of subject matter, including sordid sexuality and chaste love, psychiatric scrutiny, and the complicated mental processes of a mind reaching into those layers of nature and human nature that hardly seemed possible in thirty-one syllables.

Labai geras 20 a. pirmosios pusės japonų poetas. Eilės - pilnos melancholijos, liūdesio. Netrūksta ir dramatizmo. Naudojosi tradicine japonų poezijos forma - tanka. Bet ją modifikavo. Pirmiausia - įliedamas daug daugiau asmeniškumo ir jausmo. Vienas tų pasaulio poetų (kaip, pavyzdžiui, Sylvia Plath), kurie audė poeziją iš savųjų nelaimių. Tankas jungė į ciklus ("sekvencijas"). Štai penkiaeilis iš ciklo, susijusio su motinos mirtimi ("The Dying Mother"): "under this sky of stars / my mother's / burning / red / red". O čia - iš ciklo ("Ohiro"), kurį parašė, prievarta atskirtas nuo mylimos merginos (mat privalėjo vesti kitą): "in these fields at Yoyogi / it was from loneliness / I ran, / ran headlong / from the loneliness of my life!" Kadangi gydytojavo "durnyne", ne vieno Mokichi penkiaeilio personažas - jo pacientas: "eyes blinking, / that madman / coming out from the mosquito net / with his / "Strawberries! I want strawberries!" Eilėraščiuose daug raudonos spalvos. Kaip man tai artima!
