If you were terrified to swim in the ocean after jaws, don't read this book unless you want to be terrified to swim in fresh water! Couldn't put the book down once I picked it up. Perfect book for your summer reading list.
Meh. Were Michigan/American Chillers really this bad?!? Did I have such terrible taste as a child? Christopher Knight IS Johnathan Rand; it's the same guy which is why I wanted to read this lake monster story. It's about a giant mutated muskie fish of all things that eats people on Mullet Lake. Which sounds like a cool set up for a scary fish story...except Jaws it was not. It was written really clunky and with weird sexual dialogue that felt out of place in the spooky scenes. It was repetitive and frankly, boring. Like there was a lot of unnecessary padding in this. Disappointing for sure.
First off, Christopher Knight is Johnathan Rand, and this book certainly reads like an adult Michigan Chillers.
It’s a 5/5 book, whaddaya want me to say?? Johnathan Rand writes Northern Michigan to a T - from the “gate closing” seasonal residents to the iron-fisted DNR to the small laid back Chambers of Commerce. The book is a page turner; I read 200 of the 300 pages over the course of 2 days. The only negative note is that every single woman is described in terms of how attractive they are. Lots of “great rack long legs” type shit. Unfortunate, but a product of the genre and the 90’s. Beyond that, I was very pleased with this product!
Ferocity is a story of a stressed-out marine biologist who is taking a mandatory vacation. He chooses the village of Courville on the banks of Mullett Lake. What should be a relaxing time on a Northern Michigan becomes a nightmare when a giant muskie starts attacking and killing people. This freshwater Jaws was a fun read. Christopher Knight does a great job fleshing out the characters - we even get into the mind of the fish.
Bought this book for grandson Matt a year or so ago...at that time I decided to read it before giving it to him. Just finished...Great thriller, just a bit calmer than Stephen King. Same writer as Michighan Chillers author Johnathan Rand.
Being that this book was called Ferocity, I expected it to not be an atrocity. I had to read this book to satisfy my curiosity, but it turned out to be a monstrosity. With all these books, Knight is creating a monopoly and he's one of the few that can survive this economy.
In all seriousness, I finally finished Pandemia after several months of shitting myself trying to get through, and I expected this one to be clouded with mysteriousness. Afterward I thought I would feel a sense of relief, but instead I just felt emptiness. No more Rand books. I knew what I had to do though. It was time to read Christopher Knight's big boy books, and I was filled with eagerness.
I had seen the ads for Pandemia for years. Rand actually collaborating with another author, a big moment in both of their careers. I decided to read Knight's other books, and I actually read this one, even though I still had my fears. But Pandemia was the last book I shit myself to, so my family was turned up with cheers.
I read Ferocity on the toilet just to be safe. To my surprise, I didn't shit the whole book! What a terrific fate. I can't believe Rand is friends with this horror, mate. And I can't believe grownups read these things!
This reminds me when I got in a rap battle at school. I was no fool. My rap was very high in quality. My words are my gun. I whipped out my stale old copy of Ferocity. And sure enough, in the end, I won.
This was an easy read, but the story held my interest. That I live in Michigan, and the story takes place in Michigan, made it more enjoyable. (I did not like it when the author had one of his characters offer people "soda" to drink. He ought to know, as a Michigander himself, that we say "pop" here.) Other than that, there was plenty of suspense and a satisfying conclusion.
This was a really fun book to read! Being a muskie fisherman, I had a great time! It was really easy to put myself in the story and picture the setting and the fish. If you are a fisherman, or you have camped by a lake in Northern MN, WI or MI, you have to read this book. I would highly recommend!
I adored this book and couldn’t devour it fast enough!!! (Pun intended) I always love reading books that reference areas and landmarks I am familiar with. It was thrilling and a fast read!!! I highly recommend it!!! I will admit it was so well written that it even hangs in the back of my mind every time I enter the lake now :) I will never think of a Muskie or look at the lake the same way!
A fun summer book about a giant killer fish in a Northern Michigan summer resort lake. Yeah, it's a lot like Jaws. Could have been better with a good editor -- as the writing is a bit uneven. Yet, it had some good characters and some fun scenes. Great read for a N-MI vacation (which is when I picked it up). Worth maybe finding his other work. A nice diversion.
