Stan Smith (1929-2001) was trained at St Albans School of Art and the Royal College of Art and pursued a distinguished career as painter, author and teacher. His long teaching career included periods at the London College of Printing and the Royal College of Art and culminated in 1986 in the headship of the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford where he had taught since 1979.
This was a great find and even greater read. For anyone looking to learn MORE about drawing and sketching, this book will be a helpful and visual read. The book covers a variety of drawing and sketching topics including materials, portraits, landscape, architecture, still life, and more. What is really helpful are the detailed, step-by-step tips, captions, and callouts. Plus the variety of artwork shown is "real world" and truly inspiring.
The portrait part starts at page 108. It starts with an analyze of face in a medical anatomy way. It also introduces the different between children, adult and elders. Then, it introduced "mood", which means the same face could express different mood. The book follows with four drawing examples. I followed one of them and found the introduction very practical and useful.
