The Teaming Church: Ministry in the Age of Collaboration by Robert C. Crosby

Rate this book
A committee is not the same thing as a team.

To become a great team, a group must have a goal that is deeply challenging, a leader who is creatively empowering, and a willingness to work within a collaborative community that honors the Bible.

The Bible is full of examples of great things accomplished through teaming leaders. Scripture also provides a compelling model from which church communities and teams can learn to live and serve in light of the "Divine Team" - the Trinity. Author Robert C. Crosby provides several innovative ways in which biblical teams reflect the workings and nature of the Trinity and thus the image of God.

Revealing what he calls "The Four C's of Great Teams" - The Character, The Carrot, The Coach, and The Context - Crosby shows how successful teams reach their goals more effectively. Conversely, he also addresses the "Four Fatal Teaming Errors" and how to avoid unnecessary, time-consuming missteps.

This book provides biblical motivations, vivid examples, and practical approaches for creating a teaming culture in any faith community. Crosby, a leader who has built teams as a senior pastor, youth leader, and university administrator, is now training and mentoring a new generation of pastors and leaders.

This book is a great collection of wisdom for those doing ministry in the local church. Somehow it just doesn't come across as an original work. But, I wish more people applied this to how their teams run!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A Valuable Resource for Team-Oriented Ministry

The Teaming Church is a great resource for anyone looking to build a stronger, more collaborative ministry. Robert C. Crosby does a solid job of illustrating the importance of teamwork in the church, using both biblical examples and insights from business and leadership principles. The book provides practical strategies for fostering a culture of collaboration and gives helpful action steps for leaders looking to develop more effective teams.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is its emphasis on the idea that ministry is not meant to be a solo effort. Crosby reinforces that great teams are built on trust, shared vision, and intentional communication. His insights on assimilation, parent involvement, and leadership structure were especially useful for me as a youth pastor.

That said, there were a few sections that felt a bit repetitive, and I would have liked to see more real-world case studies from smaller churches in addition to the larger-scale ministry examples. However, the principles shared are highly applicable regardless of church size.

Overall, this book is a worthwhile read for pastors, ministry leaders, and anyone striving to build a team-centered church culture. It’s a strong 4-star read that offers plenty of wisdom for those ready to apply it!
