I wasn't very sure of this book at first. It has a lot of the initial strangeness you find in the Grimm's Fairytales. Also, there are parts of it that didn't age well (I see why Disney changed the island's name to the Island of Misfit Boys. It's actual name in the book is the Isle of Boobys). But after finishing it, I realized that it is another journey of the soul kind of story. Pinnochio is a puppet who sets out to do what is right, but either by ignorance or foolishness or deliberate disobedience ends up in some sort of mess. It is only by the grace of those who love him that he is restored to the right path. And not until he can truly learn to be self sacrificial can he become a renewed creature. It's a good story, and another one that you need to Delete your Disney memories to better enjoy.
I’m sure Matilda would rate this higher, she was into the story. I’m not sure why I said no to reading Harry Potter GOF when the content in this book is….let’s just say I took some liberties with some things.
Anyway, my main issue is the entire thing just feels like a cautionary tale to keep kids in their place. Eat what you are told to eat, do what you are told to do, wear what you are told to wear. Don’t be lazy or you’ll turn into a donkey. And the reward for being good and virtuous is that everything magically turns out all right, which also isn’t true.
Like I said, she was into it. Now she wants to watch the Disney version which I have zero problems with. Now we are onto Charlotte’s Web.
There are several wonderful lessons and discussion points in this story. The elevated use of language builds our children's vocabulary and enlivens their imaginations. *We did skip over a chapter or two that seemed a big dark for younger children.
