Kissers

Rate this book
Magic Boy has finally lost the love of his wife Amy (or so he thinks) and sets out to win back her affections in a series of harebrained schemes. His cat Spandy also falls in love -- but with a flighty starling who, unfortunately and perhaps for obvious reasons, doesn't return the feelings. Meanwhile, all of Magic Boy's friends fall in and out of love. A lot of bad advice is dispensed, but it's all made better with a kiss.

James Kochalka is an American comic book artist and writer, and rock musician. His comics are noted for their blending of the real and the surreal. Largely autobiographical, Kochalka's cartoon expression of the world around him includes such real-life characters as his wife, children, cat, friends and colleagues, but always filtered through his own observations and flights of whimsy. In March 2011 he will be declared the cartoonist laureate of Vermont, serving a term of two years.

I love Kochalka's work: extremely simple line drawings, and very little dialogue, but manages to be full of meaning. "Kissers" is what got me interested in graphic novels.

Kochalka's finest work. Absolute simplicity, clarity, and focus. Pretty much perfect.

The accompanying CD is also probably his best; more charm, less cock-rock.
