James Kochalka is an American comic book artist and writer, and rock musician. His comics are noted for their blending of the real and the surreal. Largely autobiographical, Kochalka's cartoon expression of the world around him includes such real-life characters as his wife, children, cat, friends and colleagues, but always filtered through his own observations and flights of whimsy. In March 2011 he will be declared the cartoonist laureate of Vermont, serving a term of two years.
A nice easy read. I like James style. Drawing something very simple can actually be harder then one might think, but James is able to do it well. His writing is strong as well. He has a almost childlike approach in this book. You get the sense that he is just pushing the ink along, waiting to see where the story takes him. The result, while a bit jerky in places, is also pretty fun and surprising.
I feel like he never planned out these early stories. That's not a criticism. They just showed and did strange things. They could make me happy or mae me confused as all hell. The final story was so weird about frogs and evil toadstools looking for the one to worship. I kind of adored it. It was odd. The other stories were also strange and disjoiinted but I did enjoy them. And that goes without saying the art is terrific and evocative.
