Rate this book

A book of interviews with Zi'en Cui, queer Chinese writer, filmmaker, activist, and overall fascinating character. (Interviewer Michael Berry publishes in Chinese as 白睿文.) According to Berry's introduction, there are five sets of interviews, two each from 2006 and 2014, and one from 2019, the last being a Skype panel with UCLA students. (Cui also edited and added more materials to the source transcripts later.)

Unsurprisingly, the book covers a range of topics, including Cui's experiences growing up in China in the '60s, organizing early LGBT film festivals in Beijing, sociopolitical commentary on the turbulent changes in China, thoughts on Chinese underground/independent and LGBT film, his more recent life and impressions after moving to Florida, and of course descriptions of his films and processes. I'm probably most interested in the last topic, though there are fascinating stories, insight, and gossip on the Chinese filmmaking scene 20+ years ago.

Most of Cui's films listed on letterboxd are from the aughts. Fortunately, a number of his films are available on tubi and other streaming platforms. His wikipedia filmography also stops at 2010. I'm curious why this is so, but there's nothing in the interviews that explain why he stopped making films. I just finished watching Night Scene and Feeding Boys, Ayaya; apparently they were originally shot at the same time as one film, but were split into two films later! I plan to check out more of his films and fiction.
