Death, threats, and worry. Was it better to revolt? Was it even possible? Shipwrecked and barely alive, Weston washes ashore on the wrong side of a tropical island. Here, food is a privilege and death a looming certainty — but a flourishing village lies across the ridge. The land is fertile and the sea full of fresh fish. Why won’t the starving men Weston meets take any steps to save their own lives?
In this tale of greed, hope, and desperation, Weston’s struggle for freedom from the island becomes a story of people at their best and worst. While Weston fights for his life, the men of the island contend for a more elusive and fundamental right — the power to fight for anything at all.
Compass(ion) by Krissy May and Holly Graf is a story like no other, at least not that I have read. Compass(ion) is the first book in the Heart of Elesara series and you are introduced to a few main characters that you follow throughout their journey of survival and trust with a touch of magic.
James Nukoin and his mother are fleeing for their lives. James' half-brother is out to kill James so that he can become the King of Wyvern. James, who changes his name to Weston so that he can travel without his identity being found, and his mother are escaping on a boat. Weston's mother gives his a compass which will serve him well later in life. Unfortunately before they can get somewhere safe they hit a storm and Weston is left to his Luck to survive. Weston is unsure how to use his Luck but he knows that it can be life saving and powerful.
Weston washes up on an island to a community of men living in houses on stilts. The men have been placed on that part of the island because of their desire for men. This is looked at as a punishment, they have to fight for everything and are weak from their struggles. Weston is taken in by Konrad and Khale who decide to help him even though everyone else in their little village is weary.
One of the aspects of Weston's Luck is that he sees visions into the future and he insists that Khale is going to die. Konrad will do whatever he can to save Khale as he feels they are destined to be together forever.
Konrad slips away from the Stilts to go and meet with Ambrose who is the leader of the island and lives a much better life with others on the other side of the island. They have a unique relationship so when Weston shows up on the island injured, Konrad takes him to Ambrose to help cure him.
Konrad and Weston need each other so that they can both, along with Khale, get off of the island and live the lives they know they deserve. Sadly getting off the island is not going to be easy and they will need to rely on each other fully ....
There is a lot more to this book and the story within that I feel readers need to read to experience the full impact of this tale. May and Graf have constructed an incredible tale and it is not even close to anything I have ever read and it was quite enjoyable. One thing that you will love and helps with the story is that chapters are devoted to one character and their viewpoint of the story. You read from Weston's and Konrad's side of what is going on which helps readers get to know the characters better. I highly encourage you to go grab your copy and get lost in this story.
