Plant Powered provides a roadmap to health transformation and delves into the truths of chronic diseases. In this book, Kim Murphy shares some of her personal experiences, her father’s story, as well as many others’ health transformations to encourage you to take control of your health destiny. Gain the insight & knowledge you need to start living a healthier lifestyle with the power of plants!
Most people believe that chronic diseases are genetic and there’s nothing that can be done to prevent or reverse them once you have them. Doctors prescribe pills & procedures for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and more. Yet, this does very little to slow the disease progression and never addresses the underlying cause. Just like Kim’s father who had heart disease, prostate cancer, & Alzheimer’s, he followed his doctor’s advice to the T, and but in the end it did very little as his chronic diseases got worse & worse.
The truth is that most chronic diseases can be prevented and in many cases even reversed with a whole food plant based lifestyle by addressing the root cause so that people can extend the quality of their lives, have more energy & less pain, lose weight without deprivation, and feel amazing. Kim has experienced her own incredible health transformation & weight loss after learning all the science supporting a plant-based lifestyle and how powerful it is. Even though her father never knew this information and didn’t have the chance to change his health destiny, you have the opportunity to dramatically transform your health and life through the power of whole plants.
In this book, you will • How a plant-based diet can prevent & reverse many lifestyle related chronic diseases. • The science supporting a whole food plant-based diet for health and longevity. • How to get enough protein, calcium, vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3s, and more while only eating plants. • How to eat more and lose weight so you don’t feel hungry or deprived. • A simple roadmap to transition to eating more whole plants so you can make this a lifestyle and not another yo-yo diet.
This is highly-recommended for women over 40 with chronic diseases or wanting to lose weight. In this book, Kim shares the easy to follow steps on how to lose weight on a plant based diet and provides scientifically proven ways on how to prevent and reverse chronic diseases with the same type of diet. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The science behind the WFPB lifestyle was presented in an easy to understand format, and I appreciate Kim's down to earth style. She gives actions to take, one step at a time, and is focused on progress not perfection. It's a great resource if you are curious about plant-based eating or if you've been doing it for a while and could use some support. Highly recommend!
I’m 71 and I’ve fought my weight my whole life. Now I’ve got diabetes and I feel so hopeless. I always jump in 100% into a new “diet” and then burn out, get depressed, and give up. This book shows me how to make progressive changes, week by week, and I think I can do this, one step at a time. I don’t have to be perfect from day one, I just put one foot in front of the other until after 6 weeks I’m just about there. But I can take 12 weeks if I need to, or if life trips me up. I need a lifestyle not a diet, because diets don’t work for me. This feels do-able, and I’m going to just take the first step. I’ve never been my own cheerleader but I am definitely feeling that vibe coming on! Thanks for listening. I wish good for all of us who struggle. Don’t give up!
People not in the know still refer to lifestyle changes as "diets". Plant based and veganism is a lifestyle. Kim Murphy eloquently shares her own struggle with chronic disease and being overweight, as well as her family history. She decided to do something about her struggles and this book is a clearly, concise AND EASY path for anyone to change their health for the better.
I like how each chapter had easy recipes and ingredients. I also like chapters and content for eating your HEALTH. H Harness the power of whole grains for gut health E E Enjoy fruit for improved immunity A Add colorful vegetables to supercharge your nutrient density L Love legumes for high protein and fiber T Trade oil for nuts and seeds to support your brain and heart H How to keep your plant powered life going long term
She talks about the Standard American Diet, appropriately called "SAD" and how it can be easy to slip back to bad habits, especially when she talk about vegan junk food. Then dairy comes back. She refocuses the reader by saying this lifestyle change and being plant powered is "act of love for yourself." I love that at the end of her book she has so many resources for your own journey. Some of her resources: Plant Powered Facebook Group, Plant Powered website, Plant Powered community chats to talk to other people with same issues, Mentor chats, Eating guides, Recipes and more. I like how she lets people know, you are not alone! "65% those who belong to a community are more likely to achieve their goals."
I like her advice for Week 6 on Path to HEALTH is to start/continue having 3 meals a day whole food plant based. She recommends easy swaps and so much encouragements. She believes in progress, not perfection. She also recommends 2 weeks in each phase of HEALTH for repetition and consistency. Another realization when I read this was, "you can only change yourself." You have to want to change and be better for yourself.
Other takeaways: -join the Plant Powered community -stay on track in your environment if your family is not on board with WFPB lifestyle -Meal prepping/batch prepping... food is already to go for any cooking. -Try new recipes -what's good for our bodies, is good for the environment -Change is hard, but you are worth it -It is never too late to start -we are what we eat
My own thoughts: I like how this book really fosters sensitivity, compassion and support for eating your way to health, whole food and plant powered for health. I have been vegan since February 2023 but my reasons WFPB is for the animals and living a zero-cruelty lifestyle. I found her HEALTH routine very helpful to help me maintain my consistency. WFPB lifestyle, the health aspect is just an added bonus. I am actually looking to my next physical to see my numbers! I went from 118 lbs, at my heaviest (I was on depo shots to manage my cycle and other meds for migraines), and my weight is 103 lbs. I am 5' tall and petite. I have never felt more healthy and have more energy now than I did when I was in my 20s. I do not miss meat, dairy, or eggs when there are so many better alternatives. The WFPB lifestyle is not a punishment. It may be a little daunting at first, just add more of your favorite nuts, seeds or fruit. I found it amusing that I use my blender again LOL.
Plant Powered is an enlightening and empowering guide that takes readers on a transformative journey toward improved health and well-being. One of the key strengths of this book is its emphasis on dispelling common misconceptions about chronic diseases. The author challenges the widely held belief that these diseases are solely genetic and cannot be prevented or reversed. By presenting scientific evidence and real-life examples, this book convincingly demonstrates that a whole food plant-based lifestyle can play a pivotal role in preventing and even reversing chronic diseases such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer.
The book tackles the limitations of conventional medical approaches that often focus on symptom management rather than addressing the underlying cause of chronic diseases. Through personal anecdotes, including her father's health journey, Murphy highlights the inadequacies of traditional treatments and medications in slowing disease progression. Instead, she advocates for a whole food plant-based lifestyle as a holistic and effective approach to achieving long-term health. Overall, this is a terrific book that I recommend to anyone seeking a healthier life.
The power of plants to heal chronic diseases is amazing. For several years now, I've been reading about and experimenting with a whole food plant based way of living. I must say that overall, I feel better. I am personally opposed to prescription drugs (although I know they are helpful to many folks and certainly serve a purpose) as I believe they don't cure anything, don't make us healthy, and add toxins to our bodies. Plants, on the other hand, are full of nutrients and can actually reverse many chronic diseases. Kim Murphy explains how and why that happens. She uses science and has research citations, yet her writing is friendly and easy to understand. If you are new to the idea of whole food plant based eating and are overweight or suffering from any number of chronic diseases, I highly recommend this book. It has the potential to change your life.
5.0 stars. Kim Murphy offers one of the better books I've read for those looking to try or start a whole food plant based life. Easy to read, understand, and follow. The author lays out the steps of why and how-to. She shows you how to gradually make the change to whole foods for those that want to ease their way in. Every chapter gives a story from someone who has reached the point for health reasons of trying the WFPB life and their results. The author also tells the story of her own health struggles and her reasons for hopping on board the WFPB train. Kim helpfully offers several freebies: shopping lists, a workbook, and recipes as well as a road map to health.
I've been WFPB for over 10 years and was a vegetarian 10 years prior. I already know the joys of a WFPB life. I found that it's a journey. It's ever evolving and fun, finding new foods to try, new recipes. Once you've found your reason, and there are so many (health & wellness, environmental, humane, weight loss, etc), it's amazing how quickly results happen. How you feel, look, and the health benefits that happen, what's not to love, right?
I strongly encourage everyone curious about a WFPB life to read this book and wish you all the best.
Perfect for people just beginning to start WFPB eating as well as those like me who have lost 20 pounds and normalized cholesterol readings but need further motivation. Society makes it hard to eat this way but Kim makes it easy. Love how she includes personal results from her clients and the extensive bibliography.
If you need a great explanation of ‘why’ for a Whole Food Plant Based lifestyle this is for you. I read this book as a review, since I’ve been WFPB for years. Reviews like this keep me focused. I also learn updates. Kim simplifies those more detailed books; she uncomplicated it all.
Loved this - lots of practical advice - loved the HEALTH acronym - it’s where it is - need to make it happen for health reasons this will guide you thru those opening steps
I ordered your book from AMAZON and was able to receive it via Kindle. I was attracted by your book because on Facebook add, I was led to believe it would have recipes for soy curls. Very disappointed to find there are no recipes at all. I feel misled.
