Such a nice idea for a book, but so poorly executed. There are bright spots within—I especially appreciate that the Latin text is included when appropriate and the Old English carols are preserved in their authentic spelling. But the social-justice and syncretistic side of Vatican II is on full display here. Really, my Advent devotion would’ve been just fine without Thomas Merton’s attraction to Buddha or Native American paganism or the speeches of MLK or, of all things, Jewish sources (not to mention Gabe Huck excoriating Christians for reading Isaiah as a prophecy of Jesus, etc.). Going in the donation pile.
I learned about this series while working in a Lutheran church where one of the pastors was a master of liturgy. Anyone who needs to find apt quotations, meditations, etc. for Advent could use this book -- whether a clergyperson, writer of devotional literature, or simply for one's own spiritual practice. Although you will find much from the Roman Catholic tradition, there is something here for any Christian or seeker. Highly recommended.
This book is BEAUTIFUL! Filled with simple art (drawings) and poems, stories and scripture. Educators could use it to find inspiration and the everyone can use it to pick up and purely enjoy!
