A beautiful young fashion model on the edge of success tries to keep the dark secrets of the past from destroying her as she finds herself becoming emotionally involved with her therapist, a brilliant psychiatrist with secrets as dark as those of her patient, in this psychological drama set against the glittering backdrop of the Manhattan social scene of the late 1980s.
Tinged with wicked humor and heartbreaking pathos, Vicky is the first book of author J. A. Edwards.
It isn’t often a book moves me to tears, but this one did. A psychological drama that’s part mystery and part love story, I couldn’t help but fall for this modern-day Cinderella tale. There is a plot twist at the end which I didn’t expect, which results in a happily ever after of sorts. Then a final twist at the very end that made me laugh and cry at the same time. This is very much a plot-driven story without much in the way of navel-gazing Deep Thoughts or long meandering conversations, which I found to be refreshing in a way.
I would love to read more by this author, or other writers in this genre. It is unique in its storytelling and brought me right back to my own Limelight days.
Very well written and strangely compelling. The short and slightly disjointed narrative style limited my ability to fully understand each character’s inner journey. I would love to read a longer story about Vicky’s ultimately finding grace. Still can’t decide if there is a HEA here. Great first work.
I really enjoyed this despite the fact that almost every horrible thing that can happen to a young woman happens to Vicky. If you read it prepare to have your heart ripped out. Is it great literature? No, but it’s very well-written. Is it trauma porn? Maybe a little. Is it a mystery, or an unrequited sapphic love story? Probably a bit of both. Is there a happily ever after? Yes there is, believe it or not. Will you need one handkerchief or two? Two. Most definitely two.
Imagine mixing My Dark Vanessa with Rebecca. This is what you’d get. It’s very good. It’s also very dark at times. Somehow it ends up having a happy ending.
