Toxic Medication : Volume I

Rate this book
"I take your body to claim it as mine, I give you my blood to bind our souls, and I drink yours to ensure that we meet in death. Tethered for eternity, we will walk side by side."

Akari didn’t ask to be abducted from Earth and thrown into an intergalactic war—let alone shackled to a parasitic alien through a bizarre blood-bond. Yet here she is, fighting beside a rage-fueled, shapeshifting monster who treats her like just another recruit. Brutal combat training? Deadly missions? She’s all in. The insufferable a**hole roommate she’s stuck with? Not so much.

Fuku—the alien in question—is a ruthless assassin with a body count to match, but his biggest crime? Lying. Akari isn’t just another soldier—she’s the mate he was forced to claim. Not that he treats her any differently, shares that fact, or admits to himself just how much she affects him.

Guilt-ridden, Fuku’s determined to keep his distance—but as rebellion brews and world-shattering secrets unravel, one thing becomes clear: he’ll do anything to protect Akari, even if it means burning the galaxy to keep her close… or burying the bond that ties them together.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR NEW READERS:
This is a dark, perverse sci-fi adventure with romance and feral laughs—not your typical insta-love story, cutesy monster smut, or tech-heavy space opera, but a twisted fusion of tropes. If you crave depravity, heat, villainous MMCs, unhinged humor, and agonizing slow-burn tension? Welcome to your next obsession. If you want fast romance, a sweetheart alpha, or clean sci-fi… this ain’t your cup of space whiskey.

Slow Burn, but minus the burn

Admittedly, I played myself. No one told me that this book was going to be some intergalactic love story. It’s kinda my fault that I thought it would be. The cover hooked me right away, though. I’m a sucker for a douchebag, an alpha-hole that hates everyone EXCEPT his mate. This is what I thought I’d be getting with this book, along with some kickassery. But unfortunately, in this story, the dude isn’t just a douche to everyone; he’s a complete douche to his mate, too.

FOR 580 pages! And even within those few ending pages, he still managed to call her an idiot 😞

(You could stop here unless you enjoy rants ☺️)

I wanted to like Fuku so badly, but before I get into that, let me preface it by saying that slow burns are definitely not my typical cup of tea. Unless the push and pull between the two characters is at least rewarded throughout the drags of their relationship, i.e., a highly charged moment of intimacy that may or may not lead anywhere besides just hot and bothered. But that didn’t happen here. 500+ pages of not even really any smexual tension, just words about how they felt and then when a little bit of action eventually happened, it felt lackluster given all the internal thoughts these two were having about one another and the amount of pages it took to get there. But anyway, I thought I’d still give it a chance because the book's concept was pretty interesting.

However, in my opinion, this wasn’t a slow burn because there was no.burn. It was just slow affff in regards to the “romance” aspect, if you can even call it that. Fuku was the main reason I felt that this book lacked romance. This would have fit the bill if I had gone into this novel just looking for action and space travel. But romance was a no imo. Fuku was an a@% to Akari the ENTIRE book. I get the feeling his personality was inspired by a very explosive, hotheaded character in a popular anime series, considering he called everyone an idiot without fail. Which cool, that character is actually my favorite type of guy (toxic I know), but even that dude would be gentle to his girl (if he had one). Fuku kept that same mean ass energy when it came to Akari. Not only that, he fought her hard to “teach” her and showed her no mercy; he let other dudes beat her up, too, while he just chilled because he “didn’t want to blow their cover,” but in the same chapter, would spout off how he’d unalive anyone who dared to touch her. Um. No, you wouldn’t. Stop lying, bruh.

Speaking of, He lied about stuff or withheld information unnecessarily as if sparing her feelings was a thing he cared about when he’d make her sleep on the floor or on a dog bed and called her out of her name more than anything else.

I get it; he’s had a hard life. But what did that have to do with Akari? His vitriol towards her for the entire mf book made no sense. Like the dude never once had a character arch when it came to him and her. And then, in the last 2% of the book, I’m supposed to care that they were reunited, and he let one of his walls down? Nah, he’s a prick through and through. And he had soooo much potential, the book would have been chefs kiss if HE hadn’t been so linear and one note with his pissy personality.

And Akari? She was fine, I guess, but I was confused about her character. Initially, she was presented to be this very intuitive woman who spoke her mind and could handle her own, to letting Fuku steamroll her at every turn, pivot, or bulldoze his way out of essential conversations and was completely clueless about what she was injecting into her body when it had to be very obvious what it looked like. She was smart for about one chapter and a ditz for the rest of the book, which was disappointing.

To finish up my angry rant, this book literally could have been a ten-star for me if either the relationship evolved throughout the book instead of stuffed haphazardly in the last 2%(and I don’t mean the smex; I mean him opening up and being decent to her). Or if the romance had been left out of the book, it coulda just been a good old sci-fi-action-adventure. Because that part was dope anyway. The romance part was just flat and aggravating. The banter was funny at times, but that’s about it...

[My reviews are for me/my memory so they are generally a spoiler risk.]

I want to preface the rest of my review by first saying that the world-building in this is LAUGHABLY inconsistent and nonsensical. Like, I didn't find it funny while reading it, because it was so half-assed and frustrating, but I can almost laugh now because I'm finally done with this.
Initially plowed through the first 500+ pages in a sort of hate-read, mostly because I wanted to see where the plot went, but then I set it down for like a week and a half to read something else when I had 80 pages left. I finally forced my way through the end today, and already had most of this review ready to go.

The cover was my first sign that I should have just skipped this one. (It's not the cover that's here on Goodreads; it's the one with true-form Fuku on the cover flicking you off with both hands, which is so juvenile and stupid--like him. I've always hated that sort of thing.) But the premise sounded interesting, so I gave it a chance.

I hated Fuku for the entire book. He's the absolute worst, and never gets better, for 600+ pages. He reminded me of Inuyasha (the character) in all the worst ways--arrogant, constantly putting others down, does and says dumb shit but calls everyone else dumb, super immature (though Inuyasha is stated to be a teenager mentally, and Fuku is ), etc. (Let it be known that I've loved the series since childhood, but Inuyasha himself is still one of the worst characters.) Every single response to Akari starts with: go to hell, shut the hell up, shut the fuck up. Every response ends with: wimp, moron, idiot, dumbass, etc. I'm not even joking. I searched up wimp, moron, idiot, and dumbass on Kindle and it was a total of 307 times, and that's not even all of the possible variations. It is legitimately every single time he speaks to her. He also says fuck every other word, but there are multiple times when Akari says damn or shit or something and he aggressively tells her to watch her mouth???? This is never explained. She just gives him lighthearted shit over it.

Now for the list of things that were inconsistent, made no sense, or otherwise pulled me out of the story every other page:

-Fuku is using the word humanoid from the start before he even meets Akari. He calls her Earthling throughout the book, much more than her own name. See excerpt below for why multiple uses of the word "human" at the very beginning of the story, and in a few other instances, made no sense:

Natsuki sighed. “I’m sure you’ve heard on the news that a planet called Earth was recently discovered in the neighboring Milky Way Galaxy. Apparently, the eurynomes created yet another hybrid species and seeded them on the planet thousands of years ago. Unbeknownst to the Feds, of course, this was all Top Secret. Even I didn’t know,” he rubbed the back of his head, looking troubled. “Well, a few weeks back, the eurynomes decided it was time to harvest their crop, and they’re now in possession of billions of hybrids. All of which they’re selling for various reasons on the black market. As you know, the eurynomes have created numerous species throughout our galaxy, including patreons—”

So they were "recently discovered" (again, BY the eurynomes they're talking about), but were planted there thousands of years back. Yep, makes tons of sense.

-There is a character named Draco Lazarus. When Akari and Fuku go to his special showcase at one part, the guard at the door says "Mr. Lucious." So this was obviously originally a double-Malfoy reference that was later changed and that dialogue wasn't fixed.

-One of Draco's lackeys is , and we get a short chapter from his point of view, where he says he can't condone Draco's actions anymore "as a human." He's a , who are decidedly NOT HUMAN SINCE HUMANS WERE JUST PULLED FROM EARTH. He's also abestian like Draco (orc-like humanoids), at least outwardly, but patreons (like Fuku) are an illegal race, so while he might be another type of shapeshifter like the patreons, HE'S STILL NOT HUMAN.

-In one early scene, minor character Taka is wearing a hanbok. In one of the final chapters, a kimono. Why does he have traditional Korean and Japanese clothing? In another early scene, Fuku mentions his clothes and specifically says T-shirt. Why.

-A bunch of characters, our main pair included, have Japanese names for no reason. Akari’s last name is shown as Fuku’s at the start of her chapters from a few chapters in, until the end. Eventually I assumed this was a way of showing that they were mates, but she doesn't know that until like 80% of the way into the book.

-I don't read much contemporary because I can't stand the use of clichés and cheesy modern day speech in the narration and dialogue. Fuku uses a veritable shitton of modern Earth slang even before he reads Akari's memories in the beginning. This, again, makes no sense.

-Fuku makes Marvel references after reading her memories but doesn't know what chocolate chip cookies are because he "didn't look in that much detail." But he also references the Panic Pete squeeze toy????? I didn't even know that thing had a fucking name.

-Like a month or so goes by after Fuku is originally told he's got to take on a mate from the Earthlings, during which time he learns English (pretty presumptuous that that's the language he'd have to learn, and it's also the only one referenced by other characters who take mates) and remodels his ship to accommodate her. But she's still forced to sleep on a "dog bed" in a closet. Cool. (I'm assuming this month-ish is when human/Earth stuff becomes widespread, because there are all kinds of things--like an XBox--mentioned in the story as if it's normal to have access to them. I think this is less intentional and just more nonsensical shit in this half-assed worldbuilding.)

-The "Old Tongue" that everyone uses in the book--basically the universal language--is Latin. This is so stupid in so many ways, I can't even. It barely makes the top 10 of ancient languages on Earth. If the eurynomes planted humans, why would everyone in this completely different GALAXY speak LATIN?

I just can't. So much of this book was just stupid shit like this. I don't know what kept me reading it because I will DNF books over much less. I hoped Fuku would get better. He never did. I hoped some of these inconsistencies at the beginning would improve. They obviously didn't.

And then you have the actual story itself, wherein alien assassin Shinji Fukumato is told he has to take on a mate from Earth, aggressively opposes this on the basis of "not wanting to force someone into that" or rape them, or whatever, because he's "already a monster." He then proceeds to go along with Taka's plan of appearing in front of her in his true form, exchanging blood, which poisons her, injecting his jizz into her to "counteract the poison," and then transforming into her ideal Earthling and coming back as if he's a different person and her "savior." She knows it's him immediately and says so, but he continues to lie about why she has to now live on his ship, drinking his blood (and him drinking hers) and injecting this mysterious "ointment" into her vagina every 10 hours.

Akari is overall likeable enough, but she goes from quite intuitive in the beginning to just pining for the jackass. She figures a lot out on her own, despite Fuku constantly calling her an idiot and refusing to answer questions. She obviously doesn't know anything about this galaxy or the people in it, and he just calls her a dumbass when she tries to learn, so she had literally everything working against her.

It's not even a communication problem, either. Fuku just fucking sucks. He acts like he's disgusted by her because he doesn't want to "force" her to be his mate, and he calls it everything but--symbiotic relationship because she has to be a warrior now, it'll give her powers, etc., etc.--and when she VERY clearly tells him how she feels but he continues to push her away, he's in his head like, "This idiot. Does she really think I hate her?" YES, SHE DOES.

Not only does he constantly berate, belittle, demean, and otherwise treat Akari like shit, but he also THINKS it. Nearly every thought about her is along the lines of:

"If I tell her this, she's going to whine again."
"This is going to go right over that dumbass' head."
"I hate her so much."
"Does this idiot really think that?"
ETC., ETC., ETC.

Then just randomly after seeing her win a fight, something like, "Ugh, this is making it worse. I already love her." WHERE????

He tries to explain all of this away as wanting to give her a choice because his mom was a slave or whatever, but she will literally DIE if they stop the blood/fluid exchange, unless she is given a new compatible mate. She is NEVER given a choice in this, and is forced into the relationship regardless of whether it becomes romantic.

Then when they finally have sex at the very end, he has to be told to show restraint because she tells him multiple times she's exhausted, can't go any longer, is in pain, etc., and he doesn't stop. So Taka, who is observing, has to come over a loudspeaker and tell him to fucking stop.

Fuku is the fucking worst.

About 80% of the way into the book, a new perspective is added, with Benjiro getting his own chapters depicting events instead of it just staying with Fuku or Akari. I guess this is to lead into the next book, but it just dragged an already-too-long book out by incorporating his introduction to his new mate and whatever instead of just finishing Fuku and Akari’s plotline already. He’s likeable, and would be a much more interesting protagonist than Fuku’s shitbag self, but it was super excessive to include it all in this book.

I will absolutely not be continuing with the rest of the series.

Childish

I kept reading, hoping there’d be some form of redemption for Fuku. There never was. He behaves like an 8 year old bully, which made this entire book cringe worthy, not humorous.

The AI cover is just the icing on the cake. I wish I’d noticed before I’d read the book. I cannot give an AI book a good review.

4.75 ✨ OMG! I loved EVERYTHING about this! This was so unexpectedly good! I literally did not want to put it down!

👏🏼 The characters!
First off, He’s an asshole but a lovable asshole 😅🚩😍 his character had me swooning one second and then seriously questioning my mental state in another. He def has psychopath vibes but like in a good way! He might act like he doesn’t want the girl but DONT TOUCH HIS WOMAN. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I loved him & was mad at him but also I got it. He has a tortured background, has never been loved, and is treated as an asset. I’m so glad we got to see him breakdown & then open up. Oh & the POWER 😳 he’s the anti hero in his story but the real hero in mine! Him literally smoking from his hair like Hades when he got mad 🤣

I laughed SO MANY TIMES during this read. The banter 😘😘👌 I had like a crazy amount of highlights from funny stuff to the emotional and down right dirty. The last 90% actually had me crying, cackling, crying again & then smiling so hard my jaw was going to crack.

The FMC is so freaking funny I immediately liked her.
She’s kind of nerdy, but also has that funny hot girl vibe. The way she just rolled with the punches most of the time was so impressive & also hilarious. She was just so much fun, I loved that she knew he was a hot head and would push his buttons anyway. I loved her spirit, her tenacity & her big heart.
Together they are just perfect to me ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

The side characters also captured my heart! A shapeshifting alien animal sidekick?! Loved it! His friends?! Hilarious! I serially laughed out loud several times reading the banter!

I really enjoyed this whole space world, the world building was good but not overdone. I could picture the different planets they went to, the space ship, the caves & most of the creatures.

It felt very adventurous, action filled, and the slow burn was 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to sum it up it is ADDICTING!!!

I can’t wait to read book 2!

❤️‍🔥 he gets down bad after he realizes his mistake
❤️‍🔥 alien 🍆

DNF @ 65%.

Story wasn't bad, and spice wasn't bad. Definitely a slow burn and a decent plot. I was hooked right away, and kept reading due to the plot.

So why did I DNF? I got annoyed with the MMC (like most comments are saying), and also the FMC. I wanted to stay for the story, but I just couldn't get passed the main characters.

I love the cover of Toxic Medication. Everything about the cover caught my attention and made me want to read this book. I liked the premise of the story, and the story had a very intriguing start. I wish the momentum would have continued throughout the rest of the story, but it didn't. The pacing was extremely slow. It was so slow that I completely lost interest in the story a few times. I liked Akari and seeing her development in the story. There were things that I both liked and disliked about Fuku. His fear of being a monster towards Akari in a way that his mother received in her forced experiences added some depth to him. What intermittently stilted progress in his character growth was that he didn't have a lot of growth considering the length of this book. Also, calling Akari "idiot" non-stop throughout the book went from being slightly funny in a chuckle worthy way to so many eye-rolls that I thought my eyes would pop out of the socket. 😄😐😒🙄 Between that and "puh dussey," I wanted to throw my Kindle at the wall. Fuku was supposed to be so intelligent (an advanced alien t his vocabulary came off as so limited. Every time I read "puh dussey," I literally thought "bruh...really." 😆 You're killing me with this. I like that this was set in space, and it gave the author a lot to work with in terms of other beings/creatures.

I am absolutely obsessed with this book. First of all, Fuku is completely over the top, and I love every bit of it! He’s constantly cussing, dishing out violence (to those who deserve it), and yet, deep down, he’s a secretly caring alien who just expresses his affection through tough love—especially when it comes to Akari. His personality is such a wild mix of chaos and charm, like a big kid with a deadly streak.

The banter in this book was next-level entertaining, keeping me hooked from start to finish. And honestly, at times, it felt like I was reading a manga or watching an anime—the action, the humor, the over-the-top fight scenes, all of it was so cinematic and intense. The characters had so much personality, and the storytelling was just chef’s kiss. Truly, this book is a work of art.

Yes….and…no

I read the whole thing, it definitely kept me invested even with what I consider cons. This is a different take on alien abduction and I can see a lot more story for future books. Unfortunately, I REALLY don’t appreciate the condescension and belittling of the FMC. By the end of the book the MMC’s nicknames for her (idiot and wimp mostly) are more sad types of love names, they made me dislike him and struggle to see past them. I will attempt the next book but really hope I don’t see more of this type of interaction.

The hero is so mean to her. He mates her without her consent. He doesn't tell her about it either. She thinks he is giving her medicine to heal her. It is actually his semen, and as his mate she needs regular "deposits".

He constantly calls her a wimp, a moron, an idiot, a loser, and a whiner. I really did not like him.

I liked the world building.

I’m not sure what to say

Wow just wow. This book was a whirlwind. I’m not exactly sure how I start this review other than damn. This book hit some insane and I mean insane highs and some insane lows for me. But the writing was awesome. Plot was awesome I’m just in awe I guess. Fuku and Akari were a match for everything but the journey to get there was lit and long. I know in an avide sci-fi junkie and this book hit so many markers but it is long and it is slow burn so take our author at her word! If you like instant love this is not for you this is for those that enjoy the angst and degradation in a couple. But it was so so so good! I would recommend it for anyone who likes plot with a bit of drama and romance thrown in!

It would have been a 4-5 star rating if the author had bothered to proofread and touch up the finished book with edits. The errors ruined what could have been an amazing KU read. Boasting about not editing the book in the forward left a bad taste in my mouth. Do you respect your readers? We like asshole mmcs not asshole authors.

The Universe and characters are fun despite being blatantly inspired by other media in pop culture and Asian stereotypes. Those references are so obvious they are hard to miss.

Fun tropes are alien vs human, size difference (huge), love hate, slow burn, fated mates and a juicy one bed to share scenario.

wow just wow

I loved this book. No really I did! I loved the banter. I loved how Fuku was learning along with Akari. I loved how we got to see both of their povs throughout. I hated his name calling at the beginning but it grew on me (gotta love crazy romance right?). This book is a slow SLOW burn. I expected it to get freaky fast. The wait make it better I will say. I can not wait to read more!

Different

Hey, I really liked this story. I love monster erotic reads and these monsters were truly monstrous in appearance. It was a slow burn, but that was ok. Not too many sex scenes, but the scenes were intense.
I didn't rate this story a five star because I thought the main male character was a jerk. I mean, I didn't like that he kept calling the female "idiot". I would have kicked his balls in his throat if I were the mf.

It’s a slow burn

I loved it. It was confusing in some parts, but overall I loved it. The MMC made me want to punch him and he made me laugh. The FMC stayed true to being tough even when she was anxious or insecure. The plot was easy enough to follow. I wonder if there’s going to be an expansion of this story because I’d honestly like to read more about Fuku and Akiris story. I feel like this was one epic prologue and I also want to see some of the side characters stories.

Just not for me.
I thought the mmc wouldn’t change at all but I guess his appearance changes. Which was disappointing to be honest.

Also, I got to 120 pages and when he talked to other people it was fine but when he talked to the fmc it seemed more argumentative which is fine but the snarky aggressive comments were pretty much every time he talked or replied to her. Which to me is just draining.

This book did a great job at keeping me locked in for the first 500 or so pages but I slowly lost interest towards the end. It’s a slow burn which isn’t my normal go to but it was a nice change of pace. My biggest issues with the book was the inconsistencies and the multiple pov’s. I would have loved it to be just the two mc’s pov’s. Over all I liked it but the ending felt abrupt. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series.

Amazing!!! but SLOW BURN!!!

Okay so at first I was a little iffy about this book, only because I don’t generally read a lot of sci-fi books, but it has been a crazy ride reading this book. You never know what to expect when it comes to Akari and Shinji. It is a slow burn but 100 percent worth it. And the spice is absolutely amazing!!!!!

Very entertaining

Wow what a wild ride. Very unique story, the chapters formatted as ships logs was also cool. The banter, the action, the names, the unique world building, all fantastic. Fuku was like a giant muderous puppy. I would love to see some art of these wild characters.

I’m so in love with this cover and I can’t even explain why. I guess it just calls to me. I laughed so much and I’m gonna be honest one part had me tearing up. I hope we get to see them in other books. I love that this gave nods to movies, anime, and baldur’s gate. Gonna be buying the hardcover for my collection.
