I originally read this book in high school, and it really peaked my interest because I was trying to learn more about my parents' culture from a woman's point of view. It's always been a favorite, simply because the author does a good job of developing the characters' voices just enough so that one may be drawn into the stories and understand the reality of them.
This is a beautiful collection pf shorstories set in Pakistan. Naqvi has presented psyche of men and women and place of women in traditional patrarchial society realistically. They have been written from feministic perspective as the focus of the author is on women and the range of their feelings, desires, emotions, and position in society. Besides, themes like match making, cousin romance, motherhood, duties of a wife and infatuation of males are some of the prominent ones. It is must read if you want to have a historical peep in three four decades back pakistani society.
Each story is a delicate blend of heartache, resilience and hope, with a keen eye for detail that brings the characters to life. A must-read for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking and finely crafted tales.
