Lovely young Cathy is left pregnant with her first child when her husband is killed in the war. For a while she lives with her in-laws, but she leaps at the chance to return as a maid to the household where she worked before her marriage. With the birth of her daughter she is compelled to return to her parents-in-law, a less than ideal situation, particularly when in due course Cathy is being courted by dear old friend. When Cathy marries again and sets up in the antiques business with her husband, it looks like at last she will find the happiness she deserves, but she has made an enemy who can't bear to see Cathy enjoying her life...
Anne Baker trained as a nurse in England, but after her marriage lived in Libya and Nigeria before returning to Birkenhead, where she worked as a health visitor. She now lives with her husband in Merseyside.
In 1915 Cathy Tanner marries Rolf Gottfried but things are not well between her and her mother in law Mildred who loves Rolf so much she believes Cathy has supplanted her in his affections and her world is turned totally upside down when Rolf is killed in action. Strangely enough when Rosie is born Mildred transfers her affections to her and not one ounce of resentment considering the link to the hated Cathy but when Cathy decided to marry again life begins to get very complicated and Mildred's thoughts soon turn to revenge... An absorbing and well crafted wartime drama that will appeal to any fan of historical fiction.
Another excellent story from Anne Baker. Highly recommend. Stayed later into the night to finish it. Its a story about an orphan girl who grew up in an orphanage and then was paced in service. She met a young man whom she married, he went of the fight in the first world war and was killed. The story goes on how she went to live with her mother in law.. The mother in law wasn't a nice person and caused many problems for her daughter in law.
Anne has, again, written an edge of your seat romance! Although much is expected to happen, it never see s to be quite the way you thought. Keeps you on your toes
Another fantastic saga from Anne Baker. Some lovely characters here and also a not so nice one. Just when I thought you couldn't get any worse than my own mother-in-law I discovered Mildred who wasn't just a pain in the rear but also positively unhinged!
When the women left behind had t survive, they changed into independent beings. This story tells us of the struggles of one of them. Cathy. A good story.
