I found this book very "Meh". It was difficult to get into, but mildly enjoyable once I got into it. The joy didn't last very long though, because pretty soon my reading session for the day ended. The next time I picked it up, it took me just as long to get back into again - it just wasn't that interesting, I guess.
It's a novella-length piece, and I guess the plot is good enough, but the problem is that the author tries to cram too many characters, too many plot twists, into such a small piece. Had he cut one or two of them, I think it would've gone much smoother.
Of course, it probably didn't help that I picked this book up thinking it was the FIRST in the series, and now I realise it's actually the FOURTH. My fault, but I think I would've gotten a lot more enjoyment out of it had I gotten some of the references to previous instalments in the story. Too late now, though.
The final thing I want to relay here is something that stuck with me from the very beginning of the story: I found it difficult to BELIEVE at times. So our heroes come across a room full of dead people. One person is still alive, and gives them a few words before expiring himself. There's no shock or horror, or grief, from our heroes (whom I take it are supposed to be regular people with regular lives). There's a shrug, and an "Oh, well. Now we have a mission. Let's go!"
