Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.
I read this collection because though Lovecraft has been on my radar for a while, it seems like recently I kept hearing references to his work, this that and the other being described as "Lovecraftian." And I'd never read his stuff. So I did a little research and this collection of his Cthulhu Mythos stories was highly rated. I have to admit, I don't get it. OK, some of the ideas were compelling but he flogged them to death. Here's what I really disliked:
- All stories narrated by a highly educated, professionally accomplished, privileged white male. - All the stories are so similar it's hard to remember which one was which - Constipated language and run-on sentences from hell - Stories that you have figured out halfway through but keep going on and on and on and then end in a one-liner meant to shock you, and you're like that's it? - Known fact, but the guy has an issue with women, non-whites.
I could go on but you get my drift. So I give it two stars for my enjoyment and four stars for fulfilling its duty of familiarizing me with Lovecraft's work. 2.5 stars rounded up and I'm done with Lovecraft.
a master piece by Love Craft, however he spelled the name wrong it's ktulu according to the sumerian dialect. The actual God ktulu is more myth than fact. All i could find where glimpses in the book abdul Alhzdreid, and that quote he left behind stranger eon even death may die. To make a long story short, Dagon locked him R'ley with a spell one day the spell will break and ktulu will be released. He will teach man how to kill in new ways. Also bestow powers to those who survive and the ancient Gods will rule once more. But it is still debate that ktulu really exist. It's a good read i just like watching science fall apart when the supernatural destroys mans reality mwa hahahahahaha
This one was okay. Most of the stories were interesting, and I liked all the ones HP Lovecraft wrote, although he tends to be long winded. At the Mountains of Madness was probably his best. I truly liked The Children Of Burma by Stephen Mark Rainey. Only story by him in this book, but he is great at suspense and characters. Also really liked Dweller in the Gulf by Clark Ashton Smith. The only complaint I had is that after a while all the stories seemed too similar, I know each writer was writing based on the mythos created by HP Lovecraft, but the stories needed a little more diversity. Felt like I was reading a really long book about the same situation.
Solid collection - a lot of the stories were ones I'd read before, but the ever-loved "The Events at Poroth Farm," by T.E.D. Klein is probably a particular favourite. (By the way: this is a very affordable way to get that story, I'm just saying.)
That said, I found the story quality uneven, hence the three rather than four stars.
Lovecraft'ın oluşturduğu Cthulhu mitosuna farklı yazarlar da katkıda bulunur ve ortaya birbirinden güzel yeni hikayeler ve birbirinden korkunç yeni yaratıklar çıkar.
Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long ve Robert E. Howard'ın Cthulhu mitosuna yönelik yazdıkları kozmik dehşet içeren öyküleri okumak inanılmaz keyifliydi...
I have the Leather bound version. Beautifully formatted book though text is small. As a matter of fact, if the typeface were normal paperback font you could add another 200 pages of thickness here. This is a solid chunk of HPL's Cthulhu Mythos stories. Dense and intense. Price point on this edition excellent.
