Abigail Kelly's New Protectorate world continues to be a solid reading choice for me. In this new addition to the series, we get to see the new elemental who was birthed in one of the stories in Fragile Beings. Hele (h) was born from a storm and at the start, she couldn't speak, wasn't familiar with having a body, and had to learn everything. She's a genius though with boundless curiosity and lovingly enfolded into a dragon clan. As she grows, Hele realizes she's in love with the dragon who caught her when she was first born, Vael (H). Vael is also in love with her, but has held off on claiming her because he wants her to have opportunities and choices esp because of his painful past that he projects on to her. Except Hele ends up being ready for him earlier than he expected and he handles it really awfully...there's this horrible feeling of rejection and pain on both their sides. Then Vael scrambling to try and fix it, Hele uncertain what her future holds, and other dragons butting into their business. Written in third person, dual POV. No ow drama, small om drama when h's sister sets her up on a date and H loses his mind. H is not a virgin (no one else since he met h but there is a brief mention of his general history, dragon culture is relaxed about sex) and h is a virgin (she's only felt desire for H).

This wasn't my favorite story in this world due to the feeling of rejection and angst that happens when Vael tells Hele she's not ready to be a mate. The devastation, for both of them, is portrayed so clearly that my heart just broke. Vael's past is revealed slowly so you don't get a full understanding of why he's set on this. I felt empathy for him, but he almost lost his mate. Even though they sort themselves out, another review mentioned wishing that there had been more wooing outside of the home and I agree. Personality-wise, Hele's blunt, sometimes awkward, and fairly vulnerable. Vael is externally tough but much softer on the inside with emotional scars (hence the head up his ass moments). He's also deeply protective, possessive, and devoted. The steamy times were excellent, per usual with this author, and there's a good exploratory feel to them.

I loved the strong connections Hele and Vael both had in the dragon clan, esp Hele since she had no natural family. Definitely more side characters are featured that are supportive and protective of Hele and it was great to see her family in her corner, but also the leader of the dragon clan supporting them both. A couple of those family members were in the story where Hele was born and I appreciated them popping up (there's the mention of a baby dragon on the way for Artem and Paloma). I also loved that Hele is driven to connect with other elementals, I hope this features in a future book. Cal, also from a story in Fragile Beings, is an elemental who appears briefly and I loved seeing him again.

The ending is HEA with them devotedly in love and given opportunities to pursue what Hele wants to do. Since characters in this world appear in other books, I'm sure these two will be in a future dragon book. I'm even more looking forward to the eventual book for the dragon clan leader.

Trigger warnings? Yes! Included in book.

Safety?
FMC is a virgin. MMC is not.
FMC is an elemental, which means she has been alive for thousands of years but she has not had a body in that time. So at the time of this book she has been in her physical form for about 2 years.
MMC rejects the FMC so she goes on a date with a OM. Nothing happens and he ends up ditching her.
No OW after meeting.

My thoughts?
It is simple in my mind. Abigail Kelly writes something. I gobble it on up.
I absolutely loved this instalment!!!!!!!
I’ve been looking forward to the mystery lightning elemental and her protective dragon since they were first introduced in the Fragile Beings. What an entrance. Get you a dragon who will catch your newly adult-material body that strikes down from the sky, then protect you from everyone around you. Brilliant.
This did not disappoint. I also found it so wonderful that the MMC was trying so hard to be patient and not push her, while the FMC took that man by his horns and was done waiting. It went a bit off rails because of him being so concerned about her “not being ready” that he actually rejected her. Which lead to her wonderful big sister setting her up on a date with a OM. The MMC did not like this. One argument, a sister’s broken phone, and a protectively pissed off MMC later and he went to rescue the FMC from the horrible date she was on.
After that it was just all of their pieces clicking together. I really did love to read about this couple.
I cannot waiting for more from this author.

This is a beautiful world and I enjoy living in it a lot. Hele is a great character and heroine. Vael wasn't my favorite as he tried to "protect" her and instead hurt her multiple times. Reminds me of Viktor in that. I prefer a hero who respects his mate's agency and lets her have the information to make a true choice.

I have absolutely adored every single book set in this fabulous world but my goodness there is something about the way Abigail writes about elementals that’s just like a lightening strike directly to my heart.

I love how much I came to feel for these characters in such a short time, I love getting the chance to see them grow into themselves and I love finishing off this story but knowing in my heart that the adventure is truely just beginning for them.

Well done to one of my favourite auto-read authors. You’ve blessed me with another sexy and heartwarming story, and I simply cannot wait to read the next one!

[Also for all the other Cal fans out there in the world, you must know that I was full of boundless energy when his name appeared upon the page!]

4 stars! I really really liked this book!! Specially because the characters were unique and interesting to read. We have a dragon shifter, Vael, and a storm(?) elemental named Hele. I loooove dragons so now I’m craving more of them! Hele was really fun to read and I loved how fierce and due to how she was brought to the world and her nature she was really straightforward which I adore in a character. If she wanted something or felt something she straight up told everyone without shame.

I didn’t find the angst that annoying as I read. Yes he hurt her by being too protective but he does it because he believes is the right thing to do and wants her to be free and not tied up to him. He was an ass but I honestly can’t blame him. He makes it up for her and the communication was amazing.

I loved reading about the dragon world I think it’s my favorite among all the author has presented.

I really liked the ending and the epilogue since it was hopeful and I liked how she met up with calamity from book 0.5 to plan how to reunite and protect every elemental out there. I hope the author writes more elemental characters, they are really intriguing

What to expect
No ow/om drama —> she goes to a “date” and he gets jealous but the om ditches her after their greetings which I wanted to punch him for it.
H has had sex before h is a virgin —> he js celibate after meeting her. There is no one but her in his eyes
Dragon shifter MMC
Elemental FMC
Possessive and protective MMC
Straightforward and sweet FMC
Dual POV
HEA
1.5/5 spice level

⚡️ARC Review⚡️

Gods, I can’t even describe how much I loved this book. It is always going to have a special place in my heart for many reasons, and it came to me at exactly a time when I needed it most. So let me dive in...

Abigail always paints a picture with words that is a complete sensory experience, and this book was no different. The way she fully immerses you in this elemental beings transition from something “other” to something cooporeal, it felt so REAL. The pain and confusion, the transition of collective consciousness to something with more individual sentients? This “birth” essentially, though only in the beginning, was just true literary beauty, and stayed with me long after reading. I found myself rereading certain lines just because they were so beautiful. Just, perfection.

I feel like a lot of neurodivergents would vibe HARD with Hele, me included. The way she tries to make sense of peoples facial expressions, actions, mood changes? How she struggles to figure out if she did something to cause it and what? Her crave for information to make people and social cues make sense? Can I tell you how seen I felt? I FELT SO SEEN. Hele was so relatable to this anxious, autistic neurodivergent. I’m not sure I can even accurately put into words how completely immersed I felt in this character, she is truly a neurospicy icon. Her strength and vulnerability were perfection, she was so real and dynamic. One of the most beautiful and relatable characters I’ve ever read.

Vael has that overprotective “older with a heart of gold and traumatic backstory” vibe that I LOVE…that’s a weird statement that makes no sense out of context, but I stand by it. He thinks he knows what’s best for everyone, and Hele is here to tell him he in fact does not, and make him regret it, *giddy mischievous laughter* I. Love. It. But Vael is just a misguided, protective sweet heart who’s primary goal is to provide for and protect his mate, the most precious and important person in his life. I absolutely can see his reasoning, he was wrong of course, and you can bet our Hele makes sure he knows it, but his heart was in the right place.

These two were amazing, and this book was a perfect blend of angst, stubbornness, and vulnerability, and sweet, spicy, n’ fluffy. I loved seeing them both learn and grow together.🥹

Alien-ness: 🔘🔘🔘🔘🔘(Humanoid. BIG. 👀🍆)
MCs together: 🫂🫂🫂🔘🔘( they are apart pretty often, with some moments together in the first half, then pretty much together after that)
Burn:🔥🔥🔥🔘🔘(medium burn, first sexual encounter around 40-50%)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🔘🔘 ( HOT AS HELL, with several spicy scenes)
Sweetness: 🧁🧁🧁🧁🔘 (so many super sweet moments 🥹)
Angst: 😈😈😈🔘🔘(a good amount of angst in the first half, then mostly sweet in the second half)
Action: 💥🔘🔘🔘🔘

I just want a pillow nest. That is all.

Just fyi he is a dragon, but he also has a shifted/battle form that is a traditional dragon. His normal self is a dude with a tail, horns and wings.
I did not understand the dragon situation at first and was slightly confused.

abigail kelly has been working up to becoming an auto buy for me and she just solidified that by writing this MASTERPIECE.

hele is a kick ass elemental who deserves ALL the love vael will give. her constant need and want to learn new things dug me deeper into loving the characters! vael he needs some work lord bless him 😩 the poor dragon daddy cannot express his feelings correctly (same my guy). maybe abigail meant to cause me pain, or maybe she didn’t while i was reading I WAS IN SHAMBLES but she made up for it with the HEA 😌

please enjoy this snippet that was half the reason i was sobbing with snot coming out of my nose.
“I am Hele of Clan Aždaja. I was vast and powerful. I am not someone you Choose later, when you feel like it.” Her narrow chin jutted forward. “I do not need to wait for you to decide on me. I can find a mate who is sure. Maybe one of my kind, or maybe a dragon, or even an elf. The only thing that matters is that they know who I am.”
yaaas girlypop you tell that dragon 🕺🏻🕺🏻

Y'ALL. I don't even know where to start on just how much I love this book. Abigail, you're AMAZING. I hope you continue writing stories because I've seriously fallen in love with your characters and world 🥹🥹🥹 I've said in this my other reviews before but I swear each book just gets better and better!

The way Vael just understands Hele makes me so teary-eyed. They're so in love and sweet with one another it makes my teeth ache LOL. Hele's family, especially Alex and Artem, are so protective and supportive of Hele 🥹💕 I can't help but love these characters. Alex is definitely my favourite out of anyone in this book. Her sass 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️

If you're looking for a bit of an angsty and sweet read with dragons and adoring family, then Strike is the one for you! The book comes out on May 30, so make sure to pre-order now so you can start the book ASAP when it goes live~

If you read the Fragile Beings novella collection, you probably remember the m-storm featured in Astray which birthed a new elemental. She was quickly whisked away by Taevas and co., clearly having been claimed by the dragon who caught her, as evidenced by the subtle tail wrap Abigail thought we might not notice. But we did (aka she all but pointed a neon sign at it saying "we'll come back to this, I promise!")

Hele is immediately welcomed into the 'Riik, fostered and adopted into clan Aždaja. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge and understanding puts The Little Mermaid to shame (chapter one has big Part of Your World vibes in all the best ways). I love Hele's blunt requests of "explain" every time she doesn't understand the context or application of what's going on around her. While she is often self conscious of her lack of understanding, she never lets it slow her down.

Vael--pining, just wants to hold his täht tight, but doesn't want to stop her from experiencing the world, Vael. Thinks he knows what's best for Hele, but isn't listening to what she's asking from him. Communication isn't exactly his strong suit, but once he realizes Hele waits for no dragon, he finally opens up to her and they clear up the big miscommunications that have been clouding things up between them.

The care and respect between Hele and Vael is beautiful. Abigail knocked it out of the park with the emotion and heart sewn through their story. How finding their love together will also help them find themselves as individuals. For Vael, finding out who he is outside his role in the Wing (Taevas personal security team); and for Hele, what her greater purpose in life can be as she grows and learns. I can't wait to see these two pop up in other stories as they continue on their journey together!

I’ve been waiting for Hele’s story and it did not disappoint. The way she writes elementals with their unique magic systems and yearning for community is excellent.

There were only two parts that kinda took me out of the story, but this is how you do a novella. No, doesn’t really impact the overall plots of the novels but a great deep dive into an interesting side character where every word punches to make a great story in a short length

I’m now here to manifest Radek getting his own story

This might be my most favorite of the New Protectorate novellas so far! Abigail Kelly leveled up, and this story is so emotionally rich and wonderful. Low angst, but the characters and the relationships are so good!!!

Abigail does an incredible job of continuing to build on her world, deepening it with every installment, and Hele!!!!! She is just--I LOVE HER.

This was interesting. They started as mates essentially so there wasn’t as much buildup on the meeting etc butI like the perspective of the elementals and the voice she gives them. The intimate scenes were cringe for me on this one for some reason and I skimmed a lot of it

This was adorable. I loved Hele and her curiosity and refusal to settle for anything less than she deserves. Seeing more of the Drakoniik (sp?) was fun and the family dynamic was really nice. I continue to love Abigail's writing style, it's just beautiful. Can't wait for the next one!

Even though this was on the shorter side, I found their romance so sweet. I do love it when H tries to deny himself wanting h for her own good.

Plot:
- h is an elemental who was caught her H, a dragon, when she fell from the skies
- since then, she's been adopted by empty nester dragons and has become part of their clan
- h decides that its time she has her own place and a sense of independence
- When H learns, he confronts her, worried about her safety. In response, h just tells him that she's Chosen him, and is ready for them to be together. However, H doesn't want to deprive her of this time of independence and tells her not now. h interprets this as rejection and decides she'll choose another.
- H tries going after her, but no one will tell him where she is. That is until h's sister tells him that she's on a date with an elf.
- Full of jealousy and horrified bc elves once killed his whole family, H rushes to find that h has been stood up. He feels horrible that he's made her so upset and convinces her that he does want her. He shares how his entire family was killed when he was young, so he wants her to live her life as much as possible.
- He takes her on their first date in his roost, where he shows how every inch of his home has been created with her in mind, for her.
- H tells his leader he wants to quit being on the guard, but he is just told that he's on a sabbatical. h is upset to learn that he tried to give up his life purpose at first, but eventually also acknowledges how he needs to discover himself
- they go traveling together to fufill her goal of uniting the scattered elementals.

<3 ARC REVIEW <3

this book was so good!

We are following Hele - elemental from Fragile beings - and Vael - dragon - in this story.
Hele's life changed the moment the materialized in real world, she was caught by Vael (She literally fall from the sky). This man quickly became her protector and confidant and very dear dragon to her heart.
Will her life change when she confessed her feelings and desires to him? What will be his answer? Can she find her path in this world of beings?

This story was great. I really liked how we met several characters from Fragile beings! My lovely dragons, so cute but dramatic. Can i have a story without angst and emotional damage to my poor heart?
AM i excited for Hele's plans? Without a doubt. 100%
Do i need more stories about dragons and their mates? For sure. Maybe more Artem? (i'm fangirling so much, in this book he played role of protective and nice brother! what a man!)

Totally can recommend this book to all lovers of Abigail's world. For better understanding you should read Fragile beings before Strike. But, in a world where you have a desire to eat broken glass without any thought? Go for it!!! *but maybe check 'A dragon's kiss burns cold' and 'Desire fogs the mind' novellas for dragons and elementals stories.*
ANYWAY, this story was soooooo good i enjoyed it as much as other stories from Abigail.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I liked the book but thought the previous books were more interesting.

Here, the heroine is an elemental who is "born" at the beginning of the book. The hero, a dragon, catches her right after her body is created. She doesn't know anything about having a human body. She can't talk.

Fast forward 2 years and she decides she is in love with the hero. Hero has known he is in love with her since the moment they met.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I was disappointed that her first date ditched her. Hero wanted to give her more time so she went on a date with an elf to make him jealous and because she always wanted to go on a date.

Hero finds her crying after her date ditched her. He brings her to his home and shows her how he created it just for them.

He says it counts as a date but he'll take her somewhere outside a different time.

I was upset that we never see her real first date with the hero. They have sex in his home, now their home. Everything is solved. They never go on a date "outside" his home. I thought she deserved more wooing but she said she wanted him and was ready.

She wants to create a clan of elementals so when new elementals are formed they have a family and someone who can help them learn how to survive and grow as a person. It's a nice idea.

Be still my heart. I devoured every chapter when this was a serial, and then I devoured the novella when it became a whole.

I was one of many who saw the moment of Hele’s creation in Fragile Beings and DEMANDED a story of her and the lucky dragon who caught and Chose her.

And what an amazing story Abigail created! Hele discovers herself, takes zero shit, figures out her future, and Vael is just so perfect and provides everything Hele could need or want while giving her the space to adapt to humanity. I loved every word of every page—Abigail did this couple justice with this excellent story.

We also got to meet the final Aždaja sibling, Alex, who I immediately fell in love with. She’s an excellent (if shit-starting) big sister, and I can’t wait to read a book about her.

Clockwise, beginning at top middle of image, text in white reads: voracious learner, chosen by a dragon, wrapped up in a dragon's wings, lightning = kisses, books, blankets, & pillows, she knows what she wants, sexy pool time. Cover in center is Strike, part of the New Protectorate universe, by Abigail Kelly. Background is solid black.

DNF

I love this author and was intrigued by the premise of this novel. Unfortunately, I got about halfway through and couldn’t finish because I could not get over the timing.

Without too many spoilers, the FMC has not been “alive” and part of a sentient society for more than 2 years. She is functionally and emotionally, a child. She is cared for by adults as she learns herself and the world like a child. The MMC understands this and is willing to give her time to grow and experience life before introducing his adult romantic feelings on her. She takes his understandable (if clumsily explained) reasoning like a child and acts out.

I just can’t get behind a romance that unhealthy. I didn’t want to root for her, I wanted the story to skip ahead a decade and then start. Because that would make more sense!

I recommend the series and the author, but not this particular story.

This is a perfectly structured short romance. The only drama in the story is the romance itself: can the characters communicate well enough to get out of their own way? It is helpful but not necessary to read Fragile Beings story #2, Astray first. That story gives a more visible explanation of Hele’s origins.

Vail is ruggedly incoherent but committed to Hele’s wellbeing. Hele is complicated and sort of clueless in the manner of brilliant but naive characters in several tropes. They make each other sad and cranky, then they figure it out and it’s all just about the most adorable thing ever.

This is the only book in the New Protectorate universe so far that centers the dragon society and Kelly includes just the right balance of detail and exposition without derailing a tight, focused plot.

Could not stop myself from grinning reading about Hele and Vael, both super relatable characters in their own ways. Vael's background of having his agency taken away from him and him wanting to give that back to Hele is so sweet - frustrating for Hele but super sweet as a reader. Hele is super fun to read, loved reading her experience of being an elemental. The concept of previously not having a body to now having a body is super cool and I am excited to read more about the elementals!! Hele is a headstrong character with a charming innocence that does not take away from her intelligence. She is not shy to take what she wants which is super refreshing after reading so many alphahole types of guys in romance novels. Will keep binging on whatever Abigail Kelly puts out since her writing is A++++++

Ugly crying happy tears bc I loved this book so much. Hele and Vael are so pure and real and hurt and seeing them grow made my heart hurt. I forgot about Calamity from book 1 so when I realized this was another elemental I got so excited.

This world has so many great and fascinating characters I find myself constantly wanting a book for more. Kaz, Taevas, Alex, Benny, the second vampire in Harlan’s book whose name I can’t remember.

Abigail Kelly please get to writing because I am devouring this series and am obsessed with your stories! This world is so fascinating to me and somehow seamlessly blends paranormal and fantastical elements into a modern future US without feeling outlandish or cliche and I’m sad I’m getting close to the current end.

Just to add a little note here, this book appears to have some inspiration from the Estonian language. As a native Estonian speaker, 'Draakonriik' should be 'Draakoniriik' (dragon's country) but is somewhat comprehensible also without the added -i to it, at least close enough.

But in that case, the meaning of the word shifts something akin to the state/country being the dragon, itself, or taking the shape of one dragon, almost as in a reference to the type or specimen of states, if states would be somehow organised in terms of their shape or size. Yep, leave one vowel out and that's what you get in a Finno-Ugric language :)

Also the female name Hele (in English: light) is common enough in Estonia. Vael isn't a known name.
Added the novella to my to-read pile, as I'm curious now.

Another 3.5! The romantic trope in this one also wasn’t one of my favorites— miscommunication bothers me to no end— but i love the cast, it was well written, and i adored the compassion, hope, friendship, and camaraderie. The references to Cal and other characters in previous and upcoming works were so moving and why i feel hopelessly compelled to read every single part of this series. I hate feeling like im missing something, and the satisfaction of putting all the pieces together makes me so happy.

I also cried no less than three times at some incredibly heartwarming moments. I’ve actually cried at least once in each book thus far, so that has to count for something.

Gosh gosh gosh this is so good! I love Hele and Vael so much, and seeing them finally come together was so delightful. I love how much of it is Hele owning her own agency and power and learning her independence, and Vael supporting her every step of the way, even if he does occasionally from head-up-ass-itis lol. I also really especially adore the epilogue and looking forward to seeing more Cal and Hele and the Elementals getting family 🥹
