when Detective Kane returned to active duty with the New Eden Police Dept. following a six-month suspension in the wake of shooting and killing his partner, his fellow police officers gave him a welcome back gift: a couple of bullets with his name on them. Now, a sniper is taking pot shots at the police. An ex-cop is looking to take revenge on the cop who turned him in. There's rioting in the streets and the Mayor's been kidnapped again. It's another typical week for the police in New Eden's Precinct 39!
This volume starts off with an all-time great single issue, "Point of View," which I recall simply blew my mind when I first read it in issue format when it came out. Yes, absolutely the entire issue is "shot" from a single POV, looking out the windshield of a police patrol car as two beat cops, Donahue and Miguel, go about their business. It's incredibly audacious and Grist succeeds completely, crafting a very engaging tale within this formal constraint. As with so much in the "Kane" series, this issue is essential reading for anyone wanting to explore what can be done with the medium.
Rereading Kane. Each book in a Paul Grist gets better and better and I’m not sure how. Kane is barely in this book. Not even his influence. So we get time with a lot of supporting cast, big & small. And it’s a storytelling tour de force.
