More like 4.5 stars :) .. so the book delivers what it promises .. Science without the boring bits.. We have tidbits ranging between 3929 BC and going well in Future 2169. This book has a small description of multiple streams of science. I knew very few of them beforehand and most of the entries were unique as the author focused more on the lighter and fun side of science but yes science indeed... If you are interested in Science and Reading then go for it.
People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put I just love reading and so to that end I have made it my motto to just Keep on Reading. I love to read everything except for Self Help books but even those once in a while. I read almost all the genre but YA, Fantasy, Biographies are the most. My favorite series is, of course, Harry Potter but then there are many more books that I just adore. I have bookcases filled with books which are waiting to be read so can't stay and spend more time in this review, so remember I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.

Ayrıca Açık Bilim Radyo Programını dinlerken Tevfik abi ve arkadaşlarının bahsettiği konuları da içermesi "daha önce ben bunu duymuştum" dedirtti. Açık Bilim Podcastlerini de dinlemenizi tavsiye ederim.

Llamativo como su título, Historia de la ciencia sin los trozos aburridos es más bien un anecdotario lleno de hechos extravagantes, rocambolescos y, en ocasiones, desagradables que se han ido dando a lo largo de los siglos mientras la Ciencia (con c mayúscula) iba creciendo y explicando el mundo de manera racional. Es, por tanto, una lectura ligera que terminas muy rápido.
Es el primer libro que leo del autor, Ian Cofton y me ha sorprendido su estilo de escritura desenfadado y despreocupado. Y con esto no quiero decir que no se haya documentado o no sea riguroso en los datos. Es solo que me llama la atención esa forma notable de hacer divulgación. Algo que Cofton consigue gracias a sus mañas correctas de escritor. Ciñéndose a su manera de escribir, Cofton cuenta con una prosa sencilla y equilibrada, un lenguaje técnico bien explicado, unas descripciones que, cuando están presentes, son rigurosas (a veces en exceso) y una estructura de texto correcta con una extensión adecuada, bien resumido y mejor explicado.
No es muy difícil saber de qué trata Historia de la ciencia sin los trozos aburridos. Y sí, vale, no es exactamente la “Historia” del saber científico aunque está ordenada cronológicamente. Es más bien una colección de curiosidades, teorías absurdas, comentarios poco afortunados y experimentos más que cuestionables que también adornaron las estanterías del saber durante siglos. Desde la astronomía hasta la biología molecular, pasando por la física, química y la medicina. Todas las ramas del árbol de la ciencia tienen historias disparatadas, difíciles de creer aunque absolutamente reales que te hacen reflexionar sobre los logros (y los horribles fracasos) que han hecho que la humanidad pueda avanzar. Esta antología de la ciencia demente que nadie te explica cuando estudias ni mencionan cuando lees divulgación, aparece aquí retratada en todo su esplendor. Lista para horrorizarte, asombrarte o hacerte reír a carcajadas. En cualquier caso, no te deja nunca indiferente.
En suma, Historia de la ciencia sin los trozos aburridos es una lectura ágil para aquellos a los que les gusta la divulgación y buscan algo diferente, interesante y divertido. Sin duda dejarás con la boca abierta a todos tus conocidos cuando saques a relucir algunas de las anécdotas que aparecen en este libro.

I actually really, really enjoyed this (and was very surprised I did; I don't usually enjoy this format). The timeline setup of the book was great, and the anecdotes were just long enough to be fascinating without overstaying their welcome.

Historia de la ciencia. Llenísimo de miles de datos interesantes. Es un poco denso si, y tiene tantos datos que se puede hacer difícil de leer.

¿Constatar científicamente una lluvia de ranas? ¿Hacer un recuento de cuántas personas han conseguido volar antes de que se inventase el globo? ¿Descubrir que la clomipramina tiene como efecto adverso bostezos acompañados de erecciones? ¿Frambuesas volando por la galaxia, bacterias que resuleven laberintos, brebajes rejuvenecedores, perros resucitados, el amor como prescripción médica, pájaros que cruzan semáforos en verde...? Podría seguir hasta aburrirme, pero está claro lo que he descubierto en este libro: nada convencional.
Este libro sigue un orden cronológico de descubrimientos científicos, pero también de supersticiones, de anécdotas que rozan lo ridículo y de datos que es casi seguro que no puedas encontrar en ningún otro lado. De hecho, aquí lo que importa es lo anónimo. Si conoces a alguien de los que salen en el libro, no es por lo que sabes: Darwin se come un escarabajo o Newton cuece un reloj.
Esta no es una verdadera historia de la ciencia, para eso ya hay otros libros. Aquí está, como bien señala el libro "toda la ciencia que no necesitas saber".
Me ha gustado mucho, a pesar de que no puedo decir que haya aprendido nada útil. Eso sí, proporciona unas carcajadas de reírte tú solo muy recomendables, y reúnes muchas anécdotas que contar a los amigos. Es un libro para leer entre ratos, compuesto de epígrafes muy pequeños y todos ellos igual de chocantes. No es un libro imprescindible, pero es de lo más curioso que he visto en tiempo.

Really enjoyable collection of little known science throughout the ages. Easy to read in an almost anecdotal form, I found this book perfect for my bedside table. Read a few pages before bed without much danger of getting "hooked" into reading past a reasonable bed time. :)
A heads up that a handful of entries are not for the delicate of stomach or animal lovers (I skipped the animal experiment entries).

A fun little book about all the "useless" things that happened in science. More of a "useless things that might pique someone's interest" triva book than anything to be read through in one sitting. It's basically just a brief overview of major scientific discoveries--and some not so major discoveries. Great if you like science.

This is a rather funny book to kill time. Tons and tons of strange and curious anecdotes that helped shape up the base of modern science. From ancient times, to the Dark Ages, Rennaissance and even to contemporary events.
A few years ago, when I was still in college, we had a class that used this as a text book.

The title is right. It is completely useless. There is really no science at all in the book either, just random anecdotes about things that have involved scientists or mathematicians. I recognized a few worthwhile stories, but they are so short you can't really glean anything from them. Definitely do not recommend the book.

Fun and as the title suggests totally useless. Great fun to read with friends and family has a number of facts that you wouldn't think to ask or even really know but its great to know how the world use to look at things.

Este libro es una gozada. Explica diversas historietas de la ciencia o temas relacionados con la misma de una forma muy divertida. Capítulos cortísimos y algunas muy curiosas. Muy ameno de leer, 5 estrellas.
