Flowkwee and his family have come to Earth to save mankind from the rigors of WWII. Unfortunately they arrive about 50 years too late but that's okay--the dread Threggs are about to attack Earth and turn it into a giant garden of spinach so Flowkwee's dad can save Earth in another way. Flowkwee has to disguise himself as Nigel, average English schoolboy, and that's hard since the family's resource materials are both completely inadequate and half a century out of date. They all get themselves into some very funny situations regarding the use of hands and feet, food, and pets. (Think about how you would do if you had to disguise yourself as an intelligent rock in a society of sentient rocks. Would you know what to do with your hands and feet, what to cook for company, how to train your dog?)
And then it turns out that Flowkwee's dad wants to take some Earthlings and improve them via his Improver(so as to use them as slaves). Flowkwee learns that women on Earth can do things outside the home, unheard of on his home planet. He experiences music, something that delights his senses and allows his mind to soar. And finally he and his new Earth friends even figure out how to thwart the Threggs. Maybe Earth has some advantages over his home planet after all.
Written as a series of letters from Flowkwee to family back home and illustrated with a series of (funny) black and white drawings. 4th grade and up.
