Re: The Proposal I Couldn't Refuse

Sam Wainwright has asked me to marry him! Okay, so he only needs a pretend wife to impress his boss. Nevertheless, this is my chance to get Sam to notice me as a desirable woman. I'm hoping that his posing as a loving husband and being close to the new and improved me will have Sam looking for more than just "friendship" from his wedded wife!

I found Patricia sensible, mature, and with a good head on her shoulder in the previous books. But in this book, she totally disappoints me. She's a pushover and doesn't stand up to Sam.. and speaking of Sam, the guy was a total jerk! Period. He's not hero material. Not at all. And the ending wasn't convincing enough. I don't think he really loves her.

Mostly average book which dragged on and on. I’ll be honest - I picked this up after reading the manga comic version. It was much better and I was in the mood for all my favourite tropes. A makeover, office romance, a sensible heroine and playboy hero - shoot me, I’m awful, I know. But this book despite checking a lot of the right boxes, was still dull, mostly because the couple did not share much chemistry. There was a non argument of how the hero was / wasn’t a good guy which added little to the story and didn’t really show the couple interacting. There was no need to pretend that the hero was anything else other than a good guy. This is an example of pages being wasted.

Still, there is nothing egregiously wrong with the book. Read it if you’re into romance novels or want a blast from the past. I found it funny that all the secretaries in the book were trying to marry their bosses - not falling in love but actively trying to “snare” the men. Guess that was a thing in the early 90s. 🤨
