Children are able to communicate by signing before they develop the skills necessary for speech. By teaching simple sign language to children from as young as eight months, we can help them to convey their emotions and their needs. When children begin to talk, having sign language to fall back on provides a comforting safety net. Add to the fun of signing by singing well-known nursery rhymes and songs. Even proficient speakers will long enjoy signing to a favourite song or rhyme. Simple and clear signing instructions allow anyone to join in.
Lovely illustrations. It would have been nice to have the whole nursery rhyme ('thank you says the master...'). I am not teaching my baby sign language so that element of the book is not relevant to us but I am sure it will be useful for other people.
This book was included as part of a Chatter Bag from my local children centre with props added which my baby loves using in conjunction with the book.
13-month-old Leo likes this nursery rhyme, but wasn't very interested in the book. The ASL signs are the main focus of the illustrations and they weren't catching his attention. They also caused Mom to read slower than he likes because she was trying to figure out how to do the signs based on the illustrations.
All of Annie Kubler's board books are wonderful additions to any collection. These are nursery action rhymes that have been made into board books. Great for incorporating more singing and playing into your storytimes.
