Kennedy: secretly trained by her father to be a G. I. Jane. I guess this amazon training comes very handy when facing a zombie attack. She knows how to use guns and all. The whole nine yards.

Harrison: an odd Adonis walking on Earth. Has never opened up to any girl before because they weren't interesting enough for him...As you can guess, he is interested in Kennedy but she thinks so little of herself that she doesn't notice. I mean, why would anyone look at her when Beverly is there, right?

So we have this constant "is he flirting with me;" or when after an attack he asked her "are you okay" and she goes "is he concerned about me?" Although he is probably just asking because is the decent thing to say in those circumstances.

Beverly: the name says it all, but just in case you wonder... beautiful, immaculate, wears designer's clothes and real jewelry. Used to be Kennedy's friend.

Other kids: involved so the story is not so obviously about romance in the middle of a meat eating and blood splitting apocalypse.

ZZZZZZZZZ skip it. Go read This is not a test by Courtney Summers instead.

Young adult reading perfect for young adult imaginations, not weighted down with minute details, but rather just enough to move this story along! Laury Falter’s HAVEN brings five teens together, alone, trapped within their high school with the world coming down all around them outside the locked doors. A virus has overtaken the world, a virus meant to save millions has now turned billions into flesh-eating zombies.

Part young, budding romance in an end-of-the-world setting, part action without an overabundance of gore, this tale has suspense, mystery and is a wonderful escape into the world of reading, no matter your age.

Strong main characters, interesting supporting characters and, of course, hordes of the “infected.” These teens felt real, they were wrapped up in their own worlds until the day the world became a nightmare and yet, they did not all change overnight, some grew into the roles they were meant for, others adapted and one held tight to her past “privileged” ways, until…

Laury Falter nailed pure reading entertainment to fall into.

This was an entertaining read... and I need the next book now to see how it ends.

If only Kennedy was gay and finds herself a sweet someone much like Harrison's character... but you know, a girl hehe.

A few kids get caught in their school when a zombie apocalypse occurs. It seems the principal and the cook were preppers because there's a lot of stuff there to help them out. The only problem is they're magnets for the undead who surround the school. The ending is a cliff hanger. Not a huge one but enough that you want to see what happens next. 4 stars

The characters in this weren't bad, but I didn't love any of them.

This was an okay read, but there was quite a few times where I felt bored, so it dragged quite a bit in areas. There was a few parts that I enjoyed, but there wasn't enough to make me want to read the next one.

Kennedy's day started like any other. The only difference was the nightmare she had the night before. But what is one more nightmare in the line of hundreds? How could she know what it might mean. As a high school senior, she has one more year to endure the hell that is school.

Kennedy used to be popular, she used to be the one that all of the girls wanted to be and the guys wanted to date. Now she is a social pariah. Ever since the "incident" that occurred when her father died. Kennedy now lives with the principal of her high school and she endures every day of school keeping a low profile.

Harrison is the new kid. He has the looks and athleticism that should make him popular, but he keeps to himself. He lives with his Aunt who took him in. They live in an apartment complex in Chicago near the school. The day started like all of the rest for Harrison too. When he got to school, he sees Kennedy and he approaches her for the first time. She has dropped something and he picks it up for her. Kennedy is nothing like what he expected.

The school security officer streaks past them in a blur shouting "LOCKDOWN". Faster than they could ever imagine, their school is under siege. Almost the entire student body, and the teachers, who were on their way to school, are no longer among the living. They have now become the enemy.

The majority of the human race is infected with a virus that causes them to lose the ability to experience pain, they are virtually indestructible. And they eat human flesh. Kennedy and Harrison discover that they are not alone. They are now a group of five. The group consists of a popular girl- Beverly, a brainy girl- Mei, a Football Jock- Nick Roster "DOC", and the two outcasts, Harrison and Kennedy.

As the school is surrounded, they realize that they will be stuck there for a while. They settle in and begin analyzing their resources. Kennedy's father was military, and he trained her well. She knows her way around a gun and a dangerous situation. Harrison is a natural leader and he is stronger than everyone. Beverly become a crybaby. She is a spoiled brat who only wants to be rescued so that she can live in denial that the world is no longer the same.

Kennedy and Harrison set about fortifying and guarding their sanctuary. They have food, water and a safe place to sleep. But as the world around them falls apart, basic utilities soon fail. Kennedy relies on her training and skills to keep them safe.

Stuck in the close confines of the school, Kennedy begins to have feelings for Harrison. He refuses to allow her advances. He claims it is for her own good. As they spend more time together, Kennedy realizes that Harrison is different, but she is willing to take the risk.

They group can't stay put forever. They have to find others and as food for the infected grows scarce, they get more and more desperate and in turn, dangerous.

Leaving the safe confines of the school brings reality to the surface. None of them can deny any longer that the world as they knew it is gone.

They set out to find other survivors, but they find more than they bargained for. They begin to realize that Harrison may hold more secrets than they ever could have imagined.

Will humanity be able to survive? Will the group make it to their destination and find more survivors? And if they do find them, will they be safe?

This book was presented to me by TLC book tours. Initially, I wasn't so sure. This is a young adult book. There is a love connection, but there is little more than kissing and an intimate connection between two teenagers in crisis. Typically I read much more intense romantic reads. Did I miss the adult content? NO! I really liked this book.

There were times where I seriously wanted to smack Beverly upside the head. She was immature and annoying, but I found it incredibly authentic. Not that I have ever been in a zombie apocalypse, but if there was one, I can see someone like her responding that way. I felt for Kennedy and Harrison. They both were struggling in their own way. Kennedy was dealing with the loss of her father. She can finally understand why he trained her and she is grateful. Kennedy and Harrison both have a lot of secrets.

The characters were well-developed, the dialogue was good and the story moved quickly. It is told from Kennedy's perspective and I really enjoyed her voice. She was a kick ass heroine and she was second only to Harrison in my mind. Harrison was the perfect gentleman and extremely protective of Kennedy. *swoon* This one was definitely a good high school/young adult read. I will be looking forward to book two!

Haven tells the story of five teenagers who take refuge in their high school during a zombie apocalypse. It’s one of those books where everything is seemingly normal one second, and the next the whole world has exploded in a mass of attacking zombies. It’s hard to swallow, but seems to be the norm. (As you know, I think it will be a bit more subtle than that.) I’ve read a book with a similar story line, This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers, which I really enjoyed, so I thought I’d give this one a shot.

This book was different than I expected. There wasn’t a lot of action, but I didn’t feel like it was slow and I didn’t have a difficult time getting into it. But it didn’t really get into the characters as much as I would have liked. This is Not a Test gave me a very in-depth look into the characters and their personalities. Their fears and hopes. It really had me rooting for them. Haven didn’t.

Beverly, the spoiled rich girl who refused to accept the fact that the shallow world she’d always lived in was over, was the most developed character. But she was annoying as hell. Doc and Mei are really just background characters with very little development, and if one of them had died it wouldn’t have made me even pause for a second. They were props in the book more than anything else.

The main character, Kennedy, was trained by her Navy Seal father to be a soldier. Of course. This is the kind of stuff I have a real hard time swallowing. I could buy it if she spent some time on the shooting range with her dad. If she absorbed some of his militant personality. (Although, I have issue with the way people in the military are portrayed in books. I grew up around military men, my husband is one, and most of our friends are. They aren’t disciplined, stoic and single-minded the way authors love to make them out to be. Sure, those guys exist, but for the most part the military is more like a frat than anything else. But this is a rant for another time.) As I was saying, Kennedy can do anything. Yeah. She’s a high school student who was trained to be a Navy Seal. It was a bit much at times, to be honest. Kennedy could also dream the future, which she took as her dead father trying to warn her when bad things were about to happen. I could have done without it, but it wasn’t a terrible addition. I’m assuming this will come into play more in future books, but we’ll see.

Harrison is something totally different. You know from the very beginning he isn’t a normal teenager. He eats raw meat, he never sleeps, and he has heightened senses. I almost stopped reading very early on because I started to suspect he might be a vampire—no thanks. By the halfway point though, I’d figured out how he fit into the whole thing. I’m actually kind of surprised he didn’t suspect it. It seemed pretty obvious considering where his aunt worked and how the “zombies” behaved and the fact that he was immune (you find this out pretty much right away, so this isn’t a spoiler). I think he was a nice character, although the author focused on how perfect-looking he was way too much. True, this is being told from Kennedy’s perspective, so most likely it’s just a teenage girl’s infatuation that makes him seem perfect, and not that he’s actually perfect-looking. But it got a little old.

My main issue with plot was the relationship between Harrison and Kennedy. From the very beginning Harrison is protective of Kennedy, almost to an extreme. It was confusing considering they had never spoken before the zombies attacked, and Kennedy says they had been “trading glances” for months. There was supposed to be some kind of magnetic pull between them, which I get, but the development of their relationship over the next couple months (Yes, they are trapped in the high school for months.), was glossed over a bit too much for me to really feel any desire to see them get together. When they do finally have their moment of acceptance and spend time getting to know each other, the author should have spent more time showing us the development rather than telling us. Basically, it goes like this: We spent the next few hours getting to know everything about each other. But as the reader, I learned nothing about them and I didn’t get to see any kind of development, so when they were done talking and supposedly in this really emotionally close place, I was still stuck in the place I’d been before. Where they weren’t acknowledging their feelings for each other. So, the resulting “I love yous” felt off to me. Not because I didn’t think it could be real. They’d spent months together, trapped in an intense situation, they very well could have fallen in love. I just didn’t get to see any of it. When we do finally discover that there actually was a big connection between Kennedy and Harrison, it was a little jarring. Mainly because it had never even been alluded to at the start of the book. Kennedy only says they had been trading looks, she never refers to Harrison finding her in her most vulnerable moment, which would have helped me understand their connection a little better.

My other major issue with the plot was when they finally leave the school and find the doctor working for the CDC. (Or scientist? I’m not sure who she was because they called her Mrs. instead of Dr.) The explanation of how the virus hit every major city at the same time was weird and confusing and I did not buy it at all. I liked that we got to see where the virus originated from, which is something you rarely get to see in zombie books, but it was too vague and didn’t make sense. How could drug testing on one patient in one lab release a virus in every major city at the same moment? Sorry, not buying it.

For the most part though, I liked this book. Not sure if or when I’ll pick the second one up, but I didn’t feel like I’d wasted my time when I was done, and I got through it pretty easily. It is self-published, but the writing is decent and there are minimal typos. My major complaint about the writing was the excessive use of the word that. I found myself constantly cutting it as I read, which took away from the story a bit. A little more time editing would have helped it flow better, but I get how difficult it is in the world of self-publishing, so I wouldn’t penalize the author for it.

Haven is the story of Kennedy Shaw. A Senior at Woodrow Wilson High School. This is Kennedy's account of the events that took place. It is pretty amazing that someone can put into words a zombie attack. I give Kennedy kudos.

Ok first off I have to say that sarcasm helps. No I am not being a wise-ass. My other first language besides English is Sarcasm. When it is not snarky then the sarcasm that the characters give off can add to their whole persona or lighten the mood. In this case, the sarcasm did both. I mean hello not everyone can be all rainbows and unicorns after just surviving a zombie attack. Besides this is high school people. No one really likes each other.

However I thought that the group was kind of clueless in the beginning. Seriously, you did not notice that all the streets were increasingly quiet or the broken glass. Well not until Harrison pointed it out to Kennedy. I thought that both Kennedy and Harrison were suppose to be the leaders. It is funny however that all the characters made me think of a horror movie. They are main staples of a horror flick. You have the jock, the mean girl, the weak one, the cute one, and the girl who survives.

My only real gripe with this book was that it did read a little zombie 101. Like everyone was quoting what they had seen in movies, television shows, or books. Otherwise I did think this was a pretty good book.

I have to say that I seem to be reading a lot of zombie books lately and I am kinda getting into it! There is something about the end of the world that sends a shiver of fear up your spine. I have not read any of Laury Falter’s work before so I went in not knowing what to expect.
I have to say that when the story started out I wasn’t sure how I felt about Kennedy. I really thought she was one of those girls that gets killed in the first five minutes of a horror flick cause they ran up the stairs instead of out the door. I was wrong. She turned out to have a great head on her shoulders in a crisis and managed to become a strong and fierce woman.
The characters in this story are well-developed and realistic to me. I love that in a story!

not understanding why this book got such high ratings.. I felt like the relationship with Harrison and her was really rushed. And they loved each other, like all the sudden. I got like whiplash from how faat he wanted to stay away from her to how fast he was all over her. Also, nobody gonna kiss you after you just ate raw meat... legit. These kids were doing too well emotionally for a zombie Apocalypse. Overall, the story has been done, the characters aren't relatable, and it felt rushed...

The book was actually good but some things were just too unrealistic in my opinion? Like I don't feel like this was a fantasy but the author tried to add some fantasy in there by making characters see the future in dreams and basically making them invincible? But hay ho

I guess if you're looking for a classic zombie romance novel, then here you go. I grew impatient with the main love interest. I'm talking about Kennedy. I mean, she doesn't know the guy, Harrison, only shared a few flirtatious looks before the apocalypse and yet she's willing to risk her life for him. I'm not buying. I mean don't get me wrong, the book is a solid 3.5, but I believe the main characters need work. She's too needy, i guess.
The rest of the character were plain. They were stereotypes of what you expect from a bunch of 20th century teens, and yes 20th century not 21st century.
I found Kennedy to be, mmm....too loyal and stupid. She claims to have these amazing skill yet, they rarely make an appearance. She's some kind of (spoiler here) psychic yet when her visions are coming true she freezes. Does nothing to change the course of the future. Yet she places all her importance on a guy she claims to be in love with. Come on.
Still, it's good. But, I'm about to start book two of this series and I'm already hating Kennedy, I hope she snaps out of her idiotic ways. I wouldn't be able to handle it if she attempts to risk her life for this zombie hybrid called Harrison.

If I could go back in time and wipe my memory I would.

I’ve never seen a protagonist so bone headed and I read lots of books. She claims to have military training yet at every moment where she could show it, she’s running after Harrison. How can you compare yourself to G.I. Jane if you’re such an imbecile? The two MC’s have the same dialogue more than 20 times before the book ends and it had me wondering, was I rereading the same pages unknowingly? I do commend the author, for recycling the conversations because we got the memo, HE’s DANGEROUS TO HER BUT HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW !

Also , WHY THE HELL are they using guns instead of a silent weapon? They literally know that sound attracts them but every chance they get they’re using the guns, or the fmc is screaming “HARRISON!” thus attracting the attention of every living thing in a few miles radius.

This book is a steaming pile of shite and every time I remember it I literally crash out!

IN SHORT: About average or a hair better--among lesser-known YA ZomRomPocalypse* novels. Set mostly in a high school, with some brief excursions around town. Stars 5 teen students. Not without some merit for this sub-genre, but don't expect anything mind-blowing here (unless you are a zombie meeting a bullet head-on). This is Book #1 of 2.

* Zombie / Romance / Apocalypse -- although the word 'zombie' is not used in the book.

The Good: A decent survival-driven plot (though not especially original). The teens are not complete idiots all the time.

Not-So-Good: Cringey & unrealistic dialogue/romance, many tropes, and low realism at times (not ususual for this sub-genre). Perhaps younger readers won't notice or care, though.

YA Verdict: 2.5 to 2.75 stars.
Adult Verdict: Below 2 stars.

Bullet points of the plot were good. Execution was another matter. Very blunt, no real finesse in story telling. Like Harrison obviously knew she could handle a gun well and handle herself more than adequately in hand to hand combat etc yet she made this big deal about ‘revealing’ her military dad trained her. Duh. Does she think he’s stupid and unobservant? Idk lots of parts just rubbed me the wrong way. Read this first one cause it was free on kindle unlimited but the 2nd one isn’t and I’m not about to pay for it. The romance and conspiracy were intriguing, I’ll give it that. I did want to find out how her dad got infected a year earlier but just not enough. Not sure how I feel about the premonition dreams either but they did come in handy.

I love the pace the author set for this. It gave me a nice amount of nervousness needed for apocalypse, nice amount of teenager's stupidity in time of apocalypse and great amount of thinking and relaxing to get thru apocalypse.

It was lacking in some places and some part of the story but it didn't bother me much.

Great High School take on the Apocalypse

All the angst, emotions and personality conflicts (5 years teaching HS) rolled into a very interesting take on the Apocalypse with a twist. Well written, excellent editing and no stupid and impossible coincidents like so many novels of this genre are guilty of.
Can not wait for the next book!
Enjoy

It’s really hard for me to give up on a book but this one wasn’t. I typically enjoy YA because it tends to focus more on plot, world & character building, than romance; however, I found this one to be really cheesy & overly juvenile (a real teen Disney vibe).
That being said, this is my subjective opinion, which I usually find to be in the minority… just because I wasn’t into it, doesn’t mean you won’t be, so don’t let my review be the determining factor.
