Gene Hill has a way with words and bringing his stories alive. This book is a compilation of short stories he wrote over the years, many for Field & Stream when he was a columnist. If you like hunting dogs and the outdoors, you will enjoy his recollection of the dogs he had, wished he had and those he lost. Because these are short stories, it is a wonderful book to read when you want something other than a legthy novel.
This one is a favorite that I go back to again and again, a delight even when it walks through sorrows. Gene is funny, compassionate, realistic, and an excellent writer.
Gene Hill was a columnist for Field & Stream and also wrote roughly a dozen books about hunting, hunting dogs, and the outdoors. Tears and Laughter is a collection of short stories about dogs that Gene had known or owned. True to the title, each story will bring tears or bring laughter (sometimes both). Gene's dog stories are all about hunting dogs, but it's clear that Gene was basically just a true dog-lover.
If you like dogs you should read this book. There are a few sad stories, but there are many more happy ones. I loved this book, it was amazing to read.
