Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover first edition - Little Brown,, (1994). Hardcover first edition -. Fine in fine dust jacket.. First printing. A contemporary retelling of a fairy tale - "Rumpelstiltskin"-in a Southern setting. Instead of a king, there is the greedy and brutal Hezakiah Sweatt and the heroine is a sweet young widow with a baby daughter. Beautifully illustrated with watercolor paintings by Moser. Unpaginated, oblong format.
Tucker Pfeffercorn is the tale of Rumpelstiltskin with a Southern setting. Bessie Grace, a miner's widow with a little girl, is in big trouble when an old man boasts she can spin cotton into gold and overheard by the meanest and greediest man in town. He steals her child, and the only way to get her back is to turn a room full of cotton into gold. A peculiar and evil little man offers to help her, and Bessie has no choice to accept his help. While this southern twist on Rumpelstiltskin ends the same as the traditional tale, what Bessie has to go through seems much scarier and more realistic than the fairytale. Grades 3-8
