Pay-Per-Heart
I moved out to LA to participate in a Graphic Design scholarship that turned out to be fake. That was just my luck. But there was no way I could return home. Not to the already disappointed faces of my parents, who have never believed that 'fiddling around on your computer' was an actual career. Not back to my friends who thought I was insane for breaking up with my long-term boyfriend to move out here in the first place. Not back to Georgia, full stop. So when I saw an advert in the creative pages for a graphic design and video editing job with three social media influencers-room and board included-it seemed too good to be true. It had to be a skeezy porn director trawling for new 'models', right? But I was desperate and I was willing to try anything. Turns out, I was half right. They were social media influencers alright, but for ClickHeart, a subscription service where... well... they got naked. A lot. Sure, sometimes Everett cooked (naked) and Harrison did pottery (naked) but Darwin literally just stroked his ginormous- Well, you get the point. After their previous video editor uploaded their stuff to The Hub without their permission, the guys had decided it was necessary to have their own live-in designer. But they wanted a guy. Not a girl who was deceptively named Blake. It might have been an accident that they invited me to their place for an interview, but they were the stepping stone I needed to stay in LA and finally achieve my dreams. I just had to get real cool with a lot of things real fast. Should be fine, right?

Left me wanting more

Pay-Per-Heart is a fun and charming why choose romance! The story follows Blake, who after moving to LA and discovering the school she was accepted into doesn't exist, is desperately searching for a job. When she applies to a position that offers room and board, she is shocked to find that she would be working for three sex workers as their personal graphic designer/editor. After an interview, Blake gets the job and agrees to move in. While the four of them get acquainted with each other and Blake learns about the world of sex work; the men slowly open up and Blake finds herself interested in them as more than friends and employers. However, when she begins dating her friend, things get complicated when all the men in the house make it clear to Blake that they want her too.
This is a super cute and entertaining read. I absolutely breezed through this in one sitting and found the whole book to be very lighthearted. Blake and her men were so sweet together, I loved how they became friends and got to know each other before they jumped into anything. While most reverse harems are mostly focused on lust at first and develop feelings later, Pay-Per-Heart was the opposite. You get to learn about the characters and why they work in the entertainment industry, their backstories, and whatnot, before anything romantic happens. While there was initial attraction from everyone, I liked that they took things slow and made Blake the priority. The one fault I'll say I had with the book is that I wish there was more steam; I would have loved a group scene towards the end of the book or in the epilogue when they are settled into their relationship.

Grace McGinty sure knows how to write why-choose romance…
I have today, the literal second I saw the blurb for this book, I was IN. Like, permanent ink on my calendar, read on release day in. And it didn’t disappoint.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: If you’ve been around my account, you know I haven’t read a Grace McGinty book I haven’t loved. The way she writes why-choose romance is absolute perfection every single time.
In this case, I also really loved the unconventional storyline. Three of the four men are spicy content creators - Darwin is more traditional in his content, while Everette makes spicy cooking videos and Harrison specializes in pottery. The gimmick made me laugh as much as I swooned. In case you’re wondering, the fourth member of this polycule, Hennie, owns a wiener food truck.
But I’m always impressed with how McGinty’s female MCs are written. They’re SO relatable, written with the same inner thoughts and feelings that you or I would have if we were part of the narrative. She also writes why-choose like it’s the only possible answer to happiness for these individuals to come together as a whole, and it feels so right when they get their happily ever after.
Happy to report that this was a hit to me. Great characters, unique plot, and spice that hit juuuuust right.

4.5 stars.
I'm surprised by how much I loved this. I think it's because the story of found family was so strong. These five people formed a new family that supports and loves each other. I found that utterly beautiful.
There's definitely a narrative that people need each other. And roommates aren't enough. You need to be bonded. You need to be with people who make a lifelong commitment to you and to each other. That's what makes chosen family so special.
Now, this book with NOT be for everyone; however, if I had read all the warnings I'm going to give, I may not have tried it and I'm so glad I read it. It was a lot of fun and left me with lots of gooey warm feelings.
I often wonder in these books why you would want to have multiple boyfriends cause one seems like a lot of work, but these men are so loving and supportive and it really feels like a wonderful situation where you get a lot of hugs and cuddles.
Love the slideshow where Darwin convinces the rest of the folks to try polyamory. It was hilarious and cute. One of his arguments is the need for physical affection (hugs) and I felt that.
Safety deets
- This is polyamory where one of the couples is MM. But everyone circles around the heroine, Blake. Throughout the story, she gets with everyone. But, this is a contemporary romance so it's not universally acceptable like in omegaverse or fantasy genre.
- Three of the men make their living through a porn site; however, one is a naked ceramicist, one is a naked chef, and one jacks off in front of the camera. None of them are partnered though they do discuss it and the heroine participates in the end.
- There is some talk about prior partners. The MM couple has had an open relationship where they sleep with women casually (and separately). The heroine has an ex that she broke up with just prior to moving to LA.
- There is family drama. Blake's family does NOT accept her. Her ex also creates a lot of drama.
- We get to see them later still in their polycule relationship but the epilogue isn't far in the future and no one has gotten married. Since it's complicated, not sure how to show their HEA, but it seems like they have one. All the men love and respect each other even though they don't all sleep together.
- The heroine has some self-confidence issues that seem to be solved by sex. Definitely therapy would have been useful here.

It took me a while to finish this book, due to my reading mood.
Pay-Per-Heart is a sweet why choose? romance. The good thing was that Blake, the FMC, didn't think of a Polyamorous relationship. She felt attracted to four men. It took them a while to figure out that they want a Polyamorous Relationship and a slide show to explain this. The of the men knew each other and lived together, the fourth was an outsider. But bringing him into the group was well done.
There was drama, but it wasn't other woman drama, just someone from outside of the group, who couldn't accept a relationship like theirs among other things.
I enjoyed it and had fun reading the book, even though I only could do it a little at a time.

- noticeably stronger feelings between the heroes in the mm relationship (in rh romance, I am looking for a more pronounced balance in the dimension of the heroes' feelings, especially in their relationships with the MFC)

The heroine: Blake - After dropping out of accounting in college, she took graphic design at a community college until she decided to move to Los Angeles to attend a prestigious college for digital art, but when she got there, it turned out that the address she was given was a vacant lot and all her tuition money was gone. There was no way she wanted to return home with her tail between her legs, but she was running out of money living in a crappy hotel and buying hot dogs at the local food truck for her once a day meal. She finds an ad for a live-in graphic design job, and though her friend tells her it is most likely for porn, she decides to check it out anyway.
The Heroes:
Everett - he grew up in rural Minnesota, he was a chef, and his domain is the kitchen. He does a cooking show wearing only an apron.
Harrison – grew up with Everett in rural Minnesota. he is an artist that does naked pottery for the cameras and sells the vases on his website.
Darwin – he emigrated from Ecuador and was raised by his mother and six sisters. His money maker was his extra-large and pierced package. He strokes himself while dirty talking and the viewers love it.
Hennie - he’s a successful food truck vendor and the first friend that Blake met when she moved to Los Angeles.
The Story: Blake went to the interview despite thinking that it was probably as dicey an opportunity as the college she came to LA for but was pleasantly surprised at the huge house. Though when she got to the door, the handsome man was surprised that she was a woman and said a mistake had been made. So, she cried discrimination and forced him to give her an interview. When she got into the study where the guys were, she sees two other handsome guys, none of which wanted a woman, but she showed her skills via a presentation and ended up getting the job, but was surprised that one of the social media platforms they needed her as a content editor for was with ClickHeart, where people were paid to get naked.
They have a sexual harassment clause and relationship clause in the contract. She would have to sign a relationship contract if she got into a romantic relationship with any of the guys, and that allowed them to get rid of her with little notice. Though Blake was more than happy with her salary and signed the job contract right away. I usually hate books where any of the main characters are in the adult entertainment industry. Though I have to admit, it seemed a lot more palatable that each of the guys were alone in the pictures and videos they posted online.
I really enjoyed this story, much more than I ever expected when I saw the blurb. There was much more story than smut in this, though it definitely got steamy in parts. I don’t want to give away the story, but there was a lot about this new world we live in with social media being such a huge business. The guys were not just into adult entertainment, they also were gamers and entered gaming tournaments. This was the third audiobook from Grace McGinty that I have listened to and have given 5 stars to all three. I wish she had more, but I will definitely be reading more of her books since no more are on audio at this time.
This audiobook was told in dual points of view and was narrated in dual narration by Brooke Daniels and Greyson Owens. Brooke Daniels has a clear, youthful voice which was perfect for Blake, she is very expressive and energetic. She also did great voices for some of the supporting characters including a near perfect Jennifer Coolidge impression for a Rodeo Drive shopgirl named Celine. Greyson Owens is a narrator I recently discovered, and I love his voice. He isn’t the best at different voices for different characters, but I like his voice so much that I didn’t mind.

Miss. Pass.
I wanted to like this but as the story progressed, I liked it less and less.
It didn’t feel the body positive vibes for a story where the MMCs were sex workers and the FMC was fat(?) Honestly, I don’t know how to describe her size because she hated on her body CONSTANTLY but then when anyone else talked about her body it gave mid-size vibes, but when she thought about her body it made it sound like was very plus size. But yet, her figure on the cover is normal, if not thin with curves. That alone was huge thing for me.
Some topics and story lines were just non believable:
-Her boyfriend story line (with hot dog guy) started out fine but the “depression” about the break up and how the guys thought about it; seemed unnatural and forced.
-Their house gets SWATTED by the feds bc of a bogus terrorist tip/threat. (That’s not hitting right in this cultural climate) all that so we can justify these five people living together.
-“the police are gonna call my parent and I’m gonna have to go back home” (why are we 12 yrs old)
-her being SO CONFIDENT in her professional life but utterly degrading to herself and female friendships.
-her parents calling the police and claiming that the guys were holding her there against her will; so her parents and the police did a “wellness” check. WTF.
The poly slide show! I hated the speech of “how can you work 60hrs a week and give her all that she needs. No one can satisfy a partner with a work life ” it didn’t come off as an argument for poly but as an insult for people who do have to work 60hrs a week; meaning that they don’t deserve to be in a relationship at all bc they can’t do it right.
Things I did like:
Darwins sister. And how positive they showed female empowerment.
Darwin being a raging feminist.
MM love with Harrison and Everett.
Audiobook/production comments:
I loved that this audiobook was in duet. I thought Brooke Daniels did an excellent job portraying her character. Greyson fell flat for me. All the male characters sounded EXACTLY the same. I never knew who was talking. Who was what person. The male characters blurred together.
I was looking forward to this ALC and hearing the male narrator as I had heard a lot of good reviews about him.
I think this audiobook really needed to have at LEAST two male narrators for all the MMCs.

I loved that this audiobook was in duet. I thought Brooke Daniels did an excellent job portraying her character. Greyson fell flat for me. All the male characters sounded EXACTLY the same. I never knew who was talking. Who was what person. The male characters blurred together.
I was looking forward to this ALC and hearing the male narrator as I had heard a lot of good reviews about him.
I think this audiobook really needed to have at LEAST two male narrators for all the MMCs.

This was really good for a contemporary RH. This was one of the few in that category that made me for a minute think 'this could work.'
All the guys were so different and fleshed out. They all had their quirks but were genuinely nice guys so you couldn't help but not be able to choose between them either, and root for them all instead. I loved every one of them. Especially Heinrich, with his 'Liebling's and soft pretzels. Melt my carb loving heart.
Also, this wasn't just an orgy fest like most RHs can turn into. For the most part, each of the guys had their individual time and relationship with Blake. Only two of the guys had an open MM relationship that they brought Blake into, but still for the majority of the book were one on one with her.
I really enjoyed this. Even though it was a little bit insta-love there was a lot of emphasis on the relationship/friendship building between Blake and the guys. I was really happy and rooting for this polycule? Quintuple? Gang? LOL!!

half of this book is just the heroine's endless stream of two types of thoughts:
1) "im terribly unattractive and no one could ever feel anything for me" and
2) "oh my god these guys are so HOT, so hot, i want to do [sexual thing], im melting because of how hot they are, etc. etc.".
these two thoughts, along with an ENDLESS amount of references to genitalia, was all there was for a way too big portion of the book.
i wanted to yell I GET IT fifty times at the heroine. like, how many times can you objectify your employers and criticize yourself in your mind. i get it!!!!
and the heroes mentioned several times that they want someone who doesn't want "their persona", ie they want someone who actually wants them for who they are. and in my head that doesn't equate to the heroine, who basically only had thoughts about how hot they were. i kept waiting for them to actually get to know each other but honestly, their relationships were mostly based on physical attraction.
the story did get better after the first ~50% though! which is why i didn't just give it one star.
EDIT: oh and the fact that the woman on the cover is thin ??? why? the heroine is fat, so why not draw her as such. weird.

If you're looking for lighthearted, easy to read RH, then this one is perfect. The best way to describe this book would be playful! It was a fun read with very little depth! But I still connected very well with the characters.
The guys in this book were adorable. A perfect example of golden retrievers! I loved Blake she was such a cute FMC.

I absolutely love this book! I’m so sad it’s a stand alone, I would love to see more of these characters! Blake, what an awesome woman, pushing through the hardships of moving and the downs she faces. Hennie, such a good man for her, even though it takes him a minute. Darwin, I absolutely adore him, this man is such a wonderful person. Harrison, such a sweetheart, and Everett, uh, he made me mad, but I was glad to see him get his act together. I devoured this book and I couldn’t put it down. Blake and her men are awesome!

These men made her feel wanted and loved. Heinrich, in particular, fit into the group so well and was essential. Darwin was flirty and fun, but also head over heels for Blake. Harrison and Everett made me blush—a chef and a pottery expert had me weak! Blake was constantly flustered, and so was I. The spice was fantastic. Overall, this book was a great time and had me laughing. I need more books like this!

I’m sorry but this one really did me in and not in a good way. Blake has absolutely zero self confidence or personality. She’s young and naive and so insecure it made me sad.
Hennie really felt shoehorned in for no real reason and I think I would have preferred him to have been a woman who became her best friend. Blake really needed a friend. She kinda got one in Darwin’s sister but she was a literal model and only there for like 3 seconds.
Too many over dramatic bad things happening and I really don’t like that we get a tiny glimpse of them actually all being together in the epilogue. We slog through a homophobic colleague, SWATing, a stalker ex, a MMC being assaulted and almost drugged, horrific human beings of parents, and Hennies mom being mad for WHAT? An epilogue where she pegs Darwin and says they’re all living happily ever after with literally no time to savor their happiness or get any details on how things are going and working.
We have 3 sex worker main characters basically just for them to be hot and rich because….??? The stigma around being sex workers could have been talked about more but it was mostly talking about how great it was and how rich they were. Other than Blake’s parents calling her a wh*re repeatedly.
I also find it hard to believe a man who has 2.3 million subscribers doesn’t already have someone working on editing and graphic design. Just a flaw that bugged me. They own a 12 million dollar house and don’t have a content editor? Okay.
I really wanted to like this more but it was too much going on and I didn’t leave this book basking in the romance or love from the characters. A let down after all the unnecessary hardships they spent half the book going through.

I’ve read a lot of RH romances, and usually my biggest complaint is I can’t tell the guys apart. Not so in this book! I liked each of the MMCs — they all felt distinct, and had their own relationships with Blake (the FMC). There were also found family vibes which gave the story a nice feel-good energy (but of the sexy variety).
Premise: Blake is broke after falling for a scam, so she spontaneously applies to be a live-in graphic designer for 3 social media influencers… who get naked on ClickHeart (an OnlyFans subscription service equivalent).
Blake was hilariously awkward with lots of “cartoon eyes popping out of her head” energy, and I really enjoyed how each of the relationships developed. It had the best transition to a polyamorous relationship I’ve seen in a contemporary romance (probably because it didn’t just rely on a series of sex scenes with different participant combos), and I was pretty convinced it would actually work long-term.
Honestly there was something just so ENTERTAINING about this book, and I’m debating whether it goes on my top shelf list (despite a few points if I’m being nitpicky) because I’m sure I will reread.

I have a hard time getting into certain kinds of why-choose romances. So when it’s something I think I won’t like, and I end up loving it, that’s saying something. I thought this was fun as hell. I liked the characters, I liked the plot, and I enjoyed the writing (which I’m not surprised by because hello, Grace McGinty).
I didn’t love the self deprecation. If you get annoyed by one too many self deprecating comments from the MFC, this might not be for you. It wasn’t enough to really bother me - but I’ve also been reading romance since this was basically most female characters personalities to be honest, so I’ve built up a callus around it.
It could have used more personality building, relationship building, and honestly I could have easily read another 100 pages, but none of that stopped me from enjoying the hell out if it.
Anyway, it’s been a hot second since I’ve really enjoyed a contemporary romance so yeah, really happy I enjoyed this so much.

This is the third book I've read by this author (I've read Manix & Sticks and Stones) and it seems to be a running theme with this author; the FMCs are never the priority or even prioritized, never valued as much as their male counterparts. Big no and DNF for me.

I didn’t enjoy the portrayal of the female character in this book at all. Most of the characters felt the same, I had to check the chapter title to make sure I knew who was talking. Overall it was just too trope-y and formulaic. (Other than the last scene, which I will admit was unique😉).

When Grace announced this book, I was at the edge of my seat. When she announced ARCs? I was out of my seat and jumping up and down. When I actually got one?
I died.
Pay per heart is about Blake, the sweet girl from a small town who, after falling for a scam, ended up alone and broke in LA, desperate for a job.
Cue the perfect job opportunity: editing and designing for three hot-as-sin boys. Except they do porn. What could go wrong, right?
The characters:
Blake - 22 year old Blake is a bit insecure in a way real people are, which made it easy to connect with her even if her living situation had nothing to do with my reality, she was funny and smart and seeing her develop the courage to be in a relationship with all the guys was amazing.
Darwin - my favorite of the boys, Darwin is from Ecuador, has many older sisters, and is Blake's friend first. He was the reason the harem got together and not only was he amazing, sweet and funny, his care for Blake and for the guys made him the absolute best (the pierced D didn't hurt either)!
Everett - the hard and rough around the edges Chef. Everett had a rough time growing up and ended up using drugs after getting to LA because of his hard work and long hours as a chef. He was a bit on the fence about Blake at first and definitely wasn't on board with her having a boyfriend, but later became a supporter.
Harrison - the kind guy who is trying to take care of Everett and is always avaliable for Blake, he is everyone's dream boyfriend and overcame a lot in his life, making him a great protector of Blake (and the spanking scene??? I DIED).
Hennie - Blake and Hennie met because his food truck was there when she was crying on the street about being scammed. I didn't know if he was gonna be part of the harem at first, but I was soooo hoping he did. Funny and so protective of Blake, they started dating early and then broke up because of the mess it was when she kissed someone else, but their relationship was sweet during times of need and when he became a member I couldn't be happier.
My opinion:
This book is really funny, with moments like a turkey attack.
But it also has some very deep and sweet moments, especially because it talks about some delicate business, like body shaming and insecurities, sex work, and even doxxing.
Grace did 9 work approaching these topics, and it made the book feel real and touching.
The smut aspect is to die for, with steamy and hooot as sin scenes, but still more plot than steam, which I think is essential, making it the best of both worlds.

So many thing that were good about this book. The poly aspect was addressed head on, not with a magical wand like most books of this sort.
So many thing that were good about this book. The poly aspect was addressed head on, not with a magical wand like most books of this sort.

Grace McGinty has proven to be one of my favorite authors time and again, which is why I’m sad to say that this latest book just didn’t work for me.
The Characters: I felt close to zero emotional connection to any of the characters; sure there were moments where I liked them (I.e., Darwin with his slideshow and Hennie with his dates), but there was never a point where they fully endeared themselves to me.
The Romance: Same as with the characters, I liked certain parts (again—Hennie’s dates) but the emotional connection was lacking. Outside of physical lust, there wasn’t a notable spark.
The Plot: I struggled a lot during the first 60%. I didn’t feel like anything had really happened. And whilst things did get a bit more interesting and better developed from that point on, it wasn’t by much.
I still 100% recommend giving this book a try, as well as McGinty’s other works, as she’s one of my favorite authors.

This was a mostly wholesome story about... not much. Even so, I didn't really get bored with it so that's something.
What I Liked...
The love. All of the MCs just seemed to genuinely love and care for each other and, obviously, Blake. They were honest and it cut a lot through a lot of the usual bullshit you get with this genre.
What I Didn't Like...
The story itself didn't really do much. The end was... happy but anticlimactic. I just finished and kind of sat there like...huh. Were this a shorter book I'd call it a palette cleanser but it was a longer read so I kind of expected there to be something more. Also, Blake's personality is a bit... young? I don't know. Could be my age showing but I felt like some of her inner monologue was very self-serving at times.
Would I recommend this book: Maybe?
Would I re-read this book: No.
Would I read future books by this author: Maybe.
