Joanne Opprnheim knows how to keep children and the adults who read to them entertained with the words she uses. They are crisp and serve the story well. Such is the case with "Not Now!" Said the Cow. This is a book that children will enjoy hearing over and over while the adult reader delights in taking the voices of the different animals. A beautiful story, expertly crafted by a master story teller.
We had this book as kids and we would constantly take it off the shelf so mom could read it to us, or even try to read it ourselvs. Sadly, It got lost some years ago, but it is still one of my favourite childrens books!
This book is a rhyming tale about a crow looking for help from around the barnyard while trying to take care of corn. The story is along the lines of The Little Red Hen.
A classmate in my reading methods course introduced me to this book. I thought it was really cute with a similar theme as the Little Red Hen but with a twist. My classmate made a lesson that incorporated this book and creating masks of the farm animals for the children to make. Whenever the child's part (the animal they create) is being read, the child stands up with mask and says the line. They will learn more about the characters this way. This would be best for first grade.
