Pillowface Rules

Rate this book
Thirteen years ago, Joel Olsen befriended a brutal slasher and accidentally unleashed carnage on everyone around him. Joel barely made it through that summer vacation alive.

All grown up, he’s made a horror movie that’s become a surprise hit for its unique storyline, and its titular character, Pillowface, has become a fan favorite. But the fans don’t realize the terror depicted on screen really happened to Joel when he was a twelve-year-old boy. Now he’s a guest at a horror convention and has unknowingly attracted the attention of killers he thought were dead. Joel finds himself plunged into another massacre as his old slasher friend returns to defend him from the pack of sadistic killers.

This time, the genre Joel loves is also a target. But horror has welcomed a new symbol —Pillowface. And he’s fired up his chainsaw again to kill whoever gets in his way.

A worthy sequel to the fantastic Pillowface. Like the more cult like feel to this one, and feels very meta at times too, but just as brutal, harsh, and relentless. Great characters, fun story, and more gore than you can fit in a burlap sack.

4.5 rounded down.

It’s been roughly thirteen years since we last saw Joel and Hayley. He has made an independent horror film about his adventures with Pillowface and really thinks his friend is dead and just wants to make something in his memory. However, Pillowface and his friends are very much alive and learn about the movie. This is a problem for Pillowface and his bloodthirsty brothers, but for different reasons. They all want revenge and to silence Joel once and for all. Pillowface must make a decision and either stand by his brothers or leave and protect his old friend Joel.

It’s interesting to see Pillowface struggle so much with himself. He’s not 100% ruthless killer like his boys want him to be. He begins pulling memories from the depth of his soul that he long ago buried. He realizes he’s just repressed his true feelings and been a sort of zombie soldier for Buddy and now has finally realized this and wants out. You see he has an ounce of humanity still within him and it’s saved for Joel and Haley. There’s also a surprise from Pillowfaces’ past that comes back to haunt him in a huge way which I didn’t see coming at all.

Basically Buddy reveals a plan to crash a horror convention where Joel will be and massacre everybody there. For the first time ever, Pillowface has quit the team and he showcases that in a brutal way before he heads to Joel. Much more suspense in this book. You can tell there is going to be an unhappy reunion between characters and you’re taken along for the ride, seeing the journey and whereabouts and feelings of each as the book progresses. Then you get the big climax at the end. Like, BIG.

Buddy has a rather large following now, it’s way more than just the 3 of them out there now, thanks to the dark web. But Buddy has also gotten more delusional and egotistical so that makes for fun interactions between his people. There is just something so compelling about the relationship the three brothers have: Carp, Buddy and Pillowface. It’s a really dysfunctional fucked up little family they have created.

Still some grammar issues and my main annoyance with that is that they misspelled Karlee THE ENTIRE BOOK when referencing her! Carlee (WITH A C) is from the first book and you didn’t even remember how you spelt her name? Couldn’t even look at your old book huh? I couldn’t get past that, sorry.

I enjoyed the writing, the relationships, the drama, all of it. There is so much going on during the end, so much death and excitement and forethought on the killers end, it was just great. I really enjoyed the first book and this book EVEN MORE. It leaves things very open ended so I’m sitting here going… I NEED MORE! But seriously, you should go read this series!

Great sequel to the original! I’m just not a fan of multiple POVs, and this book had A LOT of them.

They're back

Chaos, murder, mayhem, all left in the wake of the trio of psychos known as Carp, Buddy, and Pillowface. This kind of story isn't usually my cup of tea, but I read the first Pillowface book and got hooked and have since read them all. This is a really good read and I could hardly put it down once I started reading.
