Joseph Alec Keith Robicheaux, better known as Jak, has fought a lot of bad men in his day. Terrorists, drug lords, traffickers, rapists, and more, as an Army Ranger, more importantly, a Robicheaux Ranger, he's now fighting one he can't really see. Haiti is falling apart. There is no government, no police to speak of, tourists are murdered, and children are disappearing. When one of his own men is found hanged and mutilated, Jak knows he might need more help than he has at his fingertips. He never imagined that he would have, not one, but two old women to guide him in this mission. He also never imagined that he'd find the woman he'd been waiting for his entire life, in the middle of a hell-hole.
Mattie Smythe took the job teaching at the school, hoping to make a difference. Most of the children she taught were poor, hungry, and barely had a roof over their heads. But they were curious and wanted a different way. If she could provide that, she would. She never expected to have a white knight save her and then turn out to be the man of her dreams. She also never expected to be dying. Waking in Louisiana to find out that her white knight's great-grandmother was her savior was odd, but realizing that this was exactly where she needed to be, was even more strange.
Together, Jak and Mattie will find their path, and along the way, maybe help one of their own find an addition to their family.
Thank you for reading my bio and my books! I live and work in Dallas, TX. I'm the mother of two amazing daughters and two fantastic, intelligent grandsons, with one more on the way, and a wonderful son-in-law. I love to cook, travel, and write, but I'm also an avid reader. Being from a military family, my books often center around strong, military men but I also LOVE strong, independent, intelligent women. With this book Reaper-Patriots have now transitioned to the Voodoo Guardians. It does seem fitting as we are now on the 3rd generation. And while it seems new, it's pretty much the same. If you've read the previous series you know what to expect going into this one. The author has a formula that works for her and these books. The one change and it's little is the now 2nd generation of women have modified what they tell the new women, one that is more fitting. There was the usual love fest as everyone got to know Mattie and she got to see how great Belle Fleur was.
In the meantime things where Jak was were going crazy! He and his guys and the ones that came down to help weren't quite sure what to believe, as people kept talking about a devil and Haiti's version of voodoo came into play. I loved how they found Haiti's own old woman name Irene and how she helped. It was interesting how what they thought was going on, wasn't it, but learned it was both worse and better. Unusual allies around to help. The did manage to get rid of the bad guy, leaving them to go home and celebrate.
Mary Kennedy did not disappoint this reader with the rebranding of RP to Voodoo Guardians. Jak and Mattie story brought in the voodoo aspect which made me laugh. Jake rescued Mattie, they are dealing with powerful magic in Haiti. But what surprised me was how Mama Irene popped in to save one of her babies. Had the reader who is me, shaking my head. Can there be 2 Irene's?? Will you have to read to find out. Lol The children and grandchildren are finding the transition a bit difficult but like their father's, grandfather's and great grandfather's they are following in their big shoe prints saving the world and children. I can't wait for the Dylan and Gator story.
This is a first in the new series of Voodoo Guardians following the end of the RP series and it was really good. It’s main character is Jak and his love interest is teaching in Haiti. The one grouse I had about it, is her parents were stereotypical bad, upper crust English people, otherwise it had a really interesting storyline focused around Vodou and a really bad situation in Haiti. I loved the way Mama Irene finally took more of a role in the story and we found out a little more of the mystery surrounding her. A great book to read, the writing and characterization good as always
The overall series was ready for another change, and it's here! I loved this book, the story, the characters, the ongoing battle to help those in need, and give a voice to the situations most are unaware of. Having family that has done extensive mission work in Haiti, it's the bleakest situation you could imagine. No one should have to live this way. Mary Kennedy writes books about people we should all strive to be; and at the same time, educates us on the most humanitarian crisis this world faces. If you haven't read her previous books, check them out. My advice? Start at the beginning. Happy 📚 reading!
JAK and Mattie. A great start to the new Voodoo Guardians series. As always, the story had insta-love, action, suspense, and a hint of paranormal. JAK and Mattie meet in Haiti, and we get a small glimpse of how that country has been ravaged. I love that this series begins with the children. Mary Kennedy continued as she started, protecting. I liked the introduction of the new characters and can't wait for Ham's story. Also, I can't wait for Gator. I tell everyone that Mary Kennedy is one of the best authors out there.
I picked up this book to try thinking Book 1 meant I was starting at the beginning. I was dead wrong. There is a related series that if you haven’t read makes it impossible to know what is going on. The first chapter references so many other characters by long convoluted names that I was lost. I only made it through the first 3 chapters before I just gave up. Sometimes less is more. Interconnected series are fine too, but you should be able to pick up anywhere and not be completely overwhelmed with 30 plus MCs.
I chose this rating because this is actually a pretty good book. I really enjoyed pretty much all of the characters. This was a book of protection, confidence, compassion, kindness, awareness, being your own person and also following love. I enjoyed Jak and Mattie story. I think the author did an amazing job with putting these characters together. This book was well written and It touched on a deep subject. Great read! I recommend this book to all romance readers.

I gave up on this book after a few chapters as I found the depiction of British people rather stereotypical. The depiction of our culture was both offensive and inaccurate. I get the feeling that the author isn’t keen on the British in general, which is a shame. I love this genre and had heard good things about this series, but all the negative comments about our way of life just got in the way of the story for me.
Family is everything and this generation is taking it to the next level. Jak is carrying on the family business of love, protection, caring and taking out the bad guys. The characters are strong and smart yet unbelievably funny on occasion. I wish I had a grandmother like Irene but then I think everyone does. Can’t wait for the next one.
Love the new name for the group. Here stories always pull you in and make you want to be part of the Belle Fleur family. Out with the old but not completely and in with the new. Jak found his one in an unlikely place and families were made out of the evil that they found but happiness always comes in the end.
Ok so I was sad and crying when Reaper Patriots ended because I thought we wouldn't have the old crew any longer. I'm so glad I was wrong. Jak book was full of intrigue and voodoo!! So you know that means Mama Irene !!! I loved Mattie's character as well and felt for her . I'm really excited for this new series .
I was sad and a little upset that REAPER-Patriots was ending. And was not looking forward to the new Voodoo Guardians. But boy was I wrong!! Mary has done a fabulous job with the first book and I am still a fan, maybe more so now. Loved JAK and the whole story!! Thanks Mary!! Can’t wait for book 2
Mary Kennedy hits another one out of the park with this new series. She weaves in characters from Reaper Patriot series. Mama Irene weaving her special magic. Highly recommend all of her books.
I loved all the reaper patriots books and was excited to read the start of the new chapter, I was not disappointed it was great. I loved there was lots of actual voodoo in the first book of this series was very fitting. Can’t wait to read more. Xz
The new series is amazing. Still the same love, family and connections. Can't wait for the next one. Jak got the same whirl wind HEA as the rest of the awesome men and women of RP now Voodoo Guardians.
Job well done! JAK was really good. Mary Kennedy does a good job with this book. I am looking forward to the next one. I'm not sure how many books will be in this series; but I know I'm going to read them!
I have read every book in this series and look forward to the next one. I think Mary Kennedy has done a wonderful job with the way that she has rebranded and started a new series. Looking forward to the next book.
I love all of Mary's book and can't wait for each release this book was fabulous thank you for keeping Mama Irene and Mathew front and center this book was much richer for them
I have read the first three series and have loved them all. I don't review all because well there is a lot. This new one is just as great and I look forward to reading more from this next generation. 💚💙
Here comes the next generation! RP now, Voodoo Guardians are just as fabulous. I'm glad u still get the whole crew old and young. Full of everything you love about Mary Kennedys books, Family Loyalty Love Doing what's right Unexplainable magical happenings. An absolute must read 📚
I am so impressed that this merger,or should I say movement in the village has been seamless! I don't know why I am surprised🤔 This author is so talented, I knew the transition would be great! I look forward to the next book😍
I love this series. Yes this is the first in the series but it is born from one of the best and doesn't disappoint. I can tell this will be all 5 stars as well.
