Rate this book
Upon first impression, Steven Kilgore appears to be a normal, well-adjusted teenager living in a suburb of Atlanta. With a spot on his high school football team, a classic muscle car, and a beautiful girlfriend, he seems to be living the perfect life. However, Steven suffers from an extreme case of dissociative identity disorder. His second personality, Stephanie, is determined to achieve dominance and live her own life as a woman.
Misdiagnosed by doctors and misunderstood by his father, Steven constantly struggles to retain his identity. As he suffers tortuous headaches and hellish dreams, Steven contemplates suicide to save himself from the madness he finds himself succumbing to. Stephanie, however, will not allow Steven to deny her the life she believes is rightfully hers.

This story is unlike anything I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! There were a couple of instances that could use a trigger warning, which for me were fine but could be upsetting for certain readers.

Steven's mom knew something was off about him since the moment he was born. He didn't sleep, and he cried constantly. As a small child he had severe headaches and complained that a chicken was inside of his head trying to break out. As he gets older, his headaches become feelings of being out of control of his body while he watches helplessly. He begins to have violent dreams about a girl named Stephanie, the girl who lives inside of his head. The older Steven gets, the more Stephanie fights for her freedom, and control of their shared body.

To make matters even worse for Steven, his dad is an old fashioned conservative tyrant that wants him to be the perfect manly son. Steven's dad are why the book could use a trigger warnings page, because his dad uses racist and homophobic language, and is verbally and physically abusive. Every page I just hated his dad more and more, but I really liked his mom's character.

Steven's mom tries to get him help but nobody will listen to them and as things get worse, it seems the life Steven dreamed of having is slipping away as he loses his fight with Stephanie.

This book has moments of being pretty dark with lots of twists and turns. I definitely recommend this book to fans of psychological fiction as long as you are okay with the triggers I mentioned. This was the first book I read by this author but it won't be the last.
