Despite being pushed to his limits like never before, Jaehwan manages to banish Sovereign Catastrophe. This feat earns him the title of the next Gorgon Castle Lord, as his predecessor expires from the ordeal. But Jaehwan has no time to sit around in an office with a mountain of paperwork! His goal remains the same―lead an expedition into the Abyss. For this undertaking, he must have only the strongest allies at his side… and what better way to gauge their skills than crossing blades with them himself? So begins the tournament that pits Jaehwan against the best fighters in all of Chaos!
While I'm tempted, I won't tag this as "is animated series" YET (as I feel like even THAT much is jinxing it).
That said, while I more look forward to an anime of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, I won't turn my nose up at one for this series, which I'd more or less expected after Solo Leveling got one, since this is a superior version of that.
...more or less. I mean, both are SUPER pretty for "just" a web comic. The art already looks like stills from an anime (or hanguk aeni)! I think this volume in specific at least started to dull my feelings for the series, though, for a few reasons:
1. somehow even MORE violent 2. the stream of challengers actually got BORING 3. the Tournament Arc
—but I do like the ending: . Like... it's fun literally beating someone at their own game instead of JUST stabbing everything, haha.
(Also, Caiman's in this one!)
...I don't know. I might have stab fatigue, maybe? It's still *good* but not great. I'm actually starting to worry, since this is how I felt about Solo Leveling, that my feelings for ORV might ALSO start flagging as I get more into the series? I hope not, but I also get that sustaining the same quality for an extended period isn't easy.
Great for existing fans, not recommended for totally new readers.
first of all let me say that even all beat up and bruised, jaehwan is still fine af and now he even has tattooes??? consider me deceased 🙈🙈
hands down to jaehwan for thinking up the scheme for gathering strong companions for the abyss exedition by offering them the post of the new castle lord, such a great idea 👌👌 and the tournament being a pretext for rebuilding the town and economy? man, he seems like he’s all brawn, no brain and only stubborn pushing forward, but jaehwan is such a smart man 😍
I must say that the whole relationship between 10 sects, the masters and whatever is happening in great realm is getting a bit confusing and I’m just flatlining on the parts these come up 🤔
still, I’m enjoying this, so 5 stars ⭐️ for this volume
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The fiend Sovereign Catastrophe has manifested in the old castle lord and Jaehwan only wins the fight by remembering that all he has to do is sever the connection. As thanks for saving Gorgon, the dying castle lord names Jaehwan as the new castle lord.
Now Jaehwan knows his own limitations and also that he needs allies for his Abyss expedition. But not-so-political takeovers and fiendish shockwaves are going to prove to be an obstacle.
But hey, it's a good way to introduce new characters that will hopefully last more than a single volume.
This waves between a 3.5 and a 4 star, mostly because I find a lot of the story in this arc boring. Undead Gamja does a pretty decent job adapting it all, and the world is nicely expanded. It's just a slow arc where not a ton of interesting things happen. Some new characters get introduced, and that's fine, and there's some neat character banter, which is enjoyable. It's just a bit slow.
This volume is great in that it gives us a LOT of information about the world of Chaos. It's been piecemealing it together in the other three volumes, but this one really gives us a lot more information. Plus, it's a lot of fun to watch our hero kick some major butt and astonish everyone who thinks they are better than him.
I love this series so much. Jaehwan is so overpowered, but he still wants to learn and grow. I can’t wait for the next volume to see just how much more badass he gets.
Ngl, this arc had me thinking that maybe I should give up on the story. I was dragging my feet as I read. Still a fun time - I fully grasp that. Just not a fun time for me, apparently.
I love his personality. The "I don't care" attitude is so perfect and when people throw rules and regulations at him the "why?" Stumps everyone. I seriously love this story.
3,5/5. It was fun but I had a better memory of that series. I recall it to be in the same vie as Solo Leveling, while that volume at least, was far from being that good.
