The Star Seekers, Vol. 1

Rate this book
In an age when magic idols reign supreme, Star One is just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, Tier-Two boy band at best. Though the five members have been giving it their all for the past three years, their lack of magic remains a hopelessly insurmountable wall, and with their company turning its back on them, it seems to be the end of the road for their careers. Just when things can’t get any worse, a sudden attack during a performance puts their lives in danger―until leader Soule unleashes newfound powers! Will this finally be the big break the group was hoping for?

TXT are my favorite kpop group so of course I had to read this and honestly it was way better than expected! I'm really not a fan of the art style in this which brought it down a bit, but the story is quite interesting if not a bit over the top and a lil cringe. But, overall its fun and cute so a win in my books

Hmm, not sure how to rate this because while I loved the first quarter, I couldn’t seem to get invested enough by the halfway point to want to keep reading.

Do I think it’s a “bad” story?

No way!

Even if I won’t be continuing this series, I deeply loved how for an idol group we actively (and continually!) see how close these guys are. They care for one another like brothers, which is amazing because I feel in most idol-centered stories, there is always a discord between at least two members or more. This is the first time I’ve seen “harmony” displayed between ALL members, which was really awesome to see!

Honestly, I’m really bummed I didn’t feel more engaged while reading because I thought that part of the story was very moving as well as encouraging.

I would still recommend this story though! If you like idol stories with a strong theme of friendship and interesting magic, I think this is one to give a try!

Hopefully, I can try this story again in the future and like it much more!

What a ride!!

So, I’ll be frank, this book is all over the place. It does not understand the definition of paving and character development. It throws so much at you story wise and yet there’s absolutely nothing of substance to latch on to. It’s wacky. Just straight up wacky and messy.

That being said, it’s also so campy and fun. It’s definitely enjoyable if you don’t take it seriously and just let yourself go along for the ride. It’s so campy and “anime” and all over the place that you can’t help but laugh. Give it a go, especially if you’re a TXT fan. Just don’t except a super solid story lol

I wanted to love this. I really did. I love TXT but this graphic novel was a bit of a mess plot wise. The art is beautiful. The book is heavy and made out of great paper and feels very satisfying in my hands. But this story?? Yikes. Zero character development and jumpy storytelling that made little to no sense.

I am reading this series because I want to understand more of txt’s lore and universe. The overarching plot across all their media is so intriguing to me and I really like learning about the world building of their music videos and storylines. That being said, I think I’m only enjoying this series because I have other media supplementing it. If I was a non-moa, this book would not stand alone and would leave me with more questions than answers (arguably that may be what they want so they can continue to build this world). I definitely think it’s a story for kpop fans and people invested in txt as a whole because you will continue to unpack the mystery over time. If you’re looking for a series to read and don’t listen to txt, this is probably not for you.

Okay I’m giving it five stars because if you’re looking for something completely shallow and fluffy with pretty art than this is the perfect thing for you.

Is the plot deep? No, not really. Is the dialogue natural and written smoothly? Hm…not always. But was it cute and sweet and a fun easy read? Yep! So it was perfect for what I was looking for.

Will I read the next one? Maybe if I’m out at the bookstore and I stumble on it but it won’t be something I actively seek out.

This is definitely targeted toward Kpop fans. But, I still really enjoyed it. The rules of magic intrigue me and I can't wait to see what's going on with the secret society that's attacking Idol groups.

So while I'm aware of the rise of Webtoon and Korean comics as a thing in the abstract, it's not really something I've paid much attention to. But when I went to an exhibit on Korean culture and the gift shop had some comics, this seemed like a fun one to try. Admittedly, this may not have been my best choice because I also don't know much about Kpop and didn't even realize this is a tie in to a real band until I finished it.

But still, for all that I'm sure I'm lacking a bunch of context on storytelling tropes and cultural stuff, this was a fun comic. The main characters are a kpop band who aren't considered top tier because they can't use magic, which is a big part of the top acts. And this isn't stage magic, but real arcane spells and powers magic, even if it's mostly being used for stage effects. Fortunately for our heroes, a terrorist group is attacking magic using bands for reasons I assume will be explained...eventually, and after they're switched into a performance at the last minute one such attack leads them to start manifesting powers. Suddenly they're a big deal again, but they now need to juggle practicing their music and preparing for performances with developing their magical skills - and I'm sure in future volumes they're going to get more embroiled in the conflict with the terrorist group. Especially since there's already hints of prophecies and a larger world the characters are only just becoming aware of.

I did have a few quibbles. There's not a ton of character development in these first ten chapters, beyond what the different magic each hero has might say about him, and I found it hard to keep track of which prettyboy is which. It's cool that they change outfits from chapter to chapter but it also means there wasn't much making them super visually distinct. And while the volume does start with a bang and end on a good cliffhanger, it doesn't feel like a ton happens in-between. It's largely the boys getting to discover their powers one by one, without a lot of character or world development.

Still, I found the concept intriguing enough that I do want to try reading more of this. I'm curious to see where it goes and I do like the promise that one guy's mom, who herself is an accomplished magician and singer, is going to show up next time. I feel like there's potential for this to build into something larger and have a lot of interesting stuff, though if it keeps feeling like a dripfeed I'm not sure I'd want to stick with it forever. Plus, I'm honestly not clear on how many chapters exist or if this is still ongoing.

I'm tentatively tagging "dance" since they seem to be performers (K-pop) and working on a routine, but I'm still not entirely sure since the art style is just a *little* too weird for me to really get into the story. Even the cat looks more like a pig-cat (though still cute), and I really have a hard time telling the difference between the characters. Actually, that's kind of true for real life K-pop stars, my not being able to tell them apart... haha.

(You'd say my racism was showing, but I don't know. I'm Asian, but I was raised SO WHITE that I may as well have been white. Other Asians really do look identical to me without distinguishing features like pink hair or whatever.)

The basic plot actually reminds me of if Deku had been recruited into an idol group before getting One For All: The group members were recruited based on nepotism, basically, with the expectation that they would grow into their magic powers. They DO, but significantly after their debut.

The details of the plot... aren't really holding my interest. Even the cat doesn't make me want to know its deal. It's a cat! Could be LITERALLY ANYTHING, and any answer would satisfy me just as much as any other. It's a good quality book otherwise—nice printing and colours and such—but it's just not grabbing me personally to make me want to read the rest of the story instead of just find a synopsis on a wiki or elsewhere.

Edit to add: Ahahaha, it's a show also! I may have to check that out (would be easier on my eyes, at least).

- using this in place of Dark Moon: The Grey City since it’s not available on Goodreads -

Even though this is technically a prequel to The Blood Altar it was actually released second. I actually enjoyed &Team’s storyline wayyy better than Enhypen’s even though I don’t follow them closely. The absence of the biggest Mary Sue in existence - Sooha - actually made this enjoyable to read. Due to this the storyline was actually somewhat interesting. I’m annoyed knowing what’s going to happen with Khan’s love plot with Sooha - damned to an eternity or unrequited love… and happy about it?? Wth??? If they were gonna shoe horn in a romance for him, it would’ve at least been a little bit more believed if it had been Mika. I’m really annoyed the shafted his character like that. Anyways, in this story the tale of friendship/brotherhood is cute and lovely and does point towards a good moral of not condemning someone just because they’re different. Everyone has things going on in their lives and we don’t know why they’re become the way they are, instead we should treat other with love and kindness. I really love how sweet the other members/characters act with Tahel and Camil. Overall not bad, if I could, I’d rate it 3.5/5 ~

here i am again justifying my review. but i physically cannot give txt anything less than five stars.

Okay, but this time? I am genuinely in love with this story. I love love love txt's lore more than anything and this is just so perfect ASDFGHJKLPJGH. The way it ties in, especially to Eternally, Frost, Magic Island, and Nap of a Star is so crazy, like, they had to have been planning this all out since, like, debut. Also, Magic Island is my comfort place. I would probably give my soul to that cat to go there.

Was this story life changing? For me, anything with txt lore is, so I'll put this point aside

This story also had really pretty art!

Overall, I enjoyed it, and will be scouring the internet to find the next volume <3. It wasn't the best thing in the world, but it had pretty art, txt, and awesome ass lore. Probably a 3.7 star story but it's txt and ties in to my favorite stories/lore ever so it's a 5 idc.

5/5 stars

This is definitely much more aimed at teenagers and as an adult I found it a bit too much so to really enjoy it. I wanted to like it much more than I actually did. I really like Tomorrow x Together’s lore and I guess I expected more of the earlier stuff from their albums than a story about magical K-Pop idols. I found the dialogue clunky and wasn’t a huge fan of artwork either. It was hard to tell characters apart and seemed simple through a lot of it. The story wasn’t gripping either and felt lacklustre considering the premise invited a lot more could be done with it. I think teenagers will like this though and maybe that’s more the target, although I think really well done storytelling can appeal to both. Not sure I’ll keep reading the series, just didn’t really do it for me. I much preferred BTS’ Chakho to this for sure.

I’m going to call this one a 4/5, but I’m not super confident in that. I liked it no matter what though. The art is really well done and has a very fun style to it. The occasional chibi panel is very cute.

I like that this one feels less tropey than Dark Moon did, but I also feel like I learned too much, too quickly. I feel like I don’t know anyone or what is happening most of the time. It felt like they were trying to cram everything into this volume even though there are more. The world is super interesting, I just wish I was allowed to sit in it a little more. It’s also weirdly intense for a txt manga, but I’m not mad at that.

I did like that they were color coded because I do not remember some of their names, but that’s a me issue and not a book issue. Overall, it’s good, I just wish it pumped the brakes a little bit.

I'm not typically into fantasy or anything about magic, but so far I like this story a lot. I think it does move very fast and I feel like I can't get a massive grasp on some of the characters, but maybe in the next couple volumes that will change so I don't want to give this three stars instead of four because of that. I was hoping for a bit more of an intro too but the story began very quickly. I think my favorite character so far is Viken, but I feel like he also might be a lot of people's favorites because he has the most personality in volume one and seems to be the brightest. I'll definitely continue reading this though because it is fun and I am excited to see where it goes.

This was so good! I admit I only read it because it's TXT, but I think anyone that likes supernatural/alt universe or KPOP would find it enjoyable. It's an easy read, pretty artwork, and an intriguing story. I'm excited to read the next one! My only qualms were that I had issues telling the boys apart (that's probably a me problem more than anything lol) and the rules/limitations for the boys' powers is a little loose/uncertain - especially for the Soobin and Taehyun characters. Not enough of an issue at this point to deduct a star from my rating! It's just the first book, so I'm sure I'll learn their faces and hopefully their powers will become better defined :P

I originally read in WebToon format prior to physical publication, then re-read in physical format.

It was an easy, sweet, light read. The writing isn't spectacular and the art style often makes it difficult to distinguish between characters.

Honestly I don't think this is a comic for people unfamiliar with TOMORROW X TOGETHER. I would never have finished the whole WebToon if I wasn't invested in the lore of the real-world idol group.

Another HYBE WEBTOON I have been following since it was announced; as I have mentioned in previous reviews, it is interesting to go back to the beginning and see how things develop from there, especially with what one knows by the end. The art is immaculate and the dynamic of the group is wonderful, you get the feeling that these boys trust each other with their lives, both on the page and in real life.

A boy band that has never had magic is being abandoned by their record label and most of the people around them after three years of being unremarkable. And about that same time, a new opportunity presents itself that looks a little like the magic that they're going to need for stardom.

It wasn't remarkable in any way for me to keep reading the rest of the series but fun in the boy band with a touch of magic for those that would like it.
