Memory in Mind and Culture

This text introduces students, scholars, and interested educated readers to the issues of human memory broadly considered, encompassing both individual memory, collective remembering by societies, and the construction of history. The book is organized around several major How do memories construct our past? How do we build shared collective memories? How does memory shape history? This volume presents a special perspective, emphasizing the role of memory processes in the construction of self-identity, of shared cultural norms and concepts, and of historical awareness. Although the results are fairly new and the techniques suitably modern, the vision itself is of course related to the work of such precursors as Frederic Bartlett and Aleksandr Luria, who in very different ways represent the starting point of a serious psychology of human culture.

About the author

Pascal Robert Boyer is an American anthropologist of French origin, mostly known for his work in the cognitive science of religion. He taught at the University of Cambridge for eight years, before taking up the position of Henry Luce Professor of Individual and Collective Memory at Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches classes on psychology and anthropology. He was a Guggenheim Fellow and a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Lyon, France. He studied philosophy and anthropology at University of Paris and Cambridge, with Jack Goody, working on memory constraints on the transmission of oral literature

Belleğe bir sürü farklı açıdan yaklaşılıyor, kültürel, bilişsel, sosyolojik vesaire, çoğunluğu oluşturmasa da çok ilginç çalışmalar var. Yazarlar belleğin bir endüstriye dönüşmesi, kölelik gibi konuların unutturulmaya çalışılması gibi konularda eleştirel olmaktan çekinmemişler. Eseri hazırlayan bilim adamları genelde Amerika ve Danimarka'dan. Ben Danimarkalıların neden bahsettiklerini çok rahat anlarken, Amerikalı yazarların kısımlarında "ne demeye çalıştın şimdi" diye düşündüm sık sık. Kast ettiğim çeviriyle alakalı bir şey değil, tamamen meramını iletme mevzusu. 11 Eylül... Evet, ABD için toplumsal bir travma ama o kadar makaleden birinde bile mi farklı bir örnek üzerinden anlatma yoluna girişilmez, bir toplumun 11 Eylül dışında hiçbir travması nasıl olmaz hayret ettim ve bir süre sonra baydı 11 Eylül ibaresini görmek.

Doesn't say a whole lot in my opinion. Read for a class to establish memory studies as a field and honestly, this text waffles a lot. It establishes why memory matters, why it has gained importance in social and political discussions and that's it. It could have been done a lot snappier is all.
