This is the third John Coates that I’ve read and of the three it is the least good, which is disappointing, however it is compelling and interesting and entertaining; and in accord with the author’s style. The book covers the span of a short honeymoon, taken on a yacht, traveling from England to France and the misadventures that prepare the newlyweds for their future life together and lead them to a greater understanding of each other. Written mostly from the perspective of the young wife. Coates always walks a fine line between comedy and tragedy, often evoking both fear and laughter, but for me, this particular effort didn’t quite achieve that magical equilibrium which makes his books so satisfying. I did not buy into his ending and plainly put, I felt he fluffed it. However, with this caveat in mind, it is worth the read.
