Arrietty is a girl's name of British origin meaning "dainty" and "gorgeous". The Arrietty in this book is a 17-year-old who seems to be recovering from something similar to PTSD and some memory loss. Her mother, an artist, is missing and her father is pretty mean and seems to be keeping things from Arrietty whether from an abundance of caution or some other nefarious reason it's hard to tell. Within the first 35% of the book her younger brother Eddie also goes missing which increases the tension in the story.

This was a pretty good book although not a 5-star in my opinion. Parts of the story take place in current time and other parts flash back to 2 years previously. The lead-up to the big twist/reveal went on far too long in my opinion. It definitely created tension but was a bit much. I'm not sure how I feel about the explanation. It certainly was unexpected but maybe also unrealistic? I felt like there were many threads left dangling, like what was the purpose of introducing Hugo, Shane and James into the story. Unless they were red herrings. Some of the chapters had small sketches at the end which was a pleasant surprise.

The author has a new book being published on December 5th and I'm definitely interested in reading it as well as some of her back list, all of which seem to be available with a Kindle Unlimited membership.

I borrowed a copy of this book with my Kindle Unlimited membership at no charge. All opinions expressed are my own.

Arrietty lives a nice life, living with her parents and little brother Eddie. Until late one night her mother walks out the front door and sixteen hours later she has still not returned. Arriety and Eddie just want their mum back but Arrietty’s dad is just acting strange and is refusing to call the police . Arrietty fears the worst and all she wants to do is find her mother and protect her brother.

How do I even start to review this book without giving away spoilers. It’s not just a book about a missing person, it’s much much more than that. Wow ! This book is an absolute rollercoaster of a read . There were times I was honestly speechless as I read this unputdownable book. Arrietty is a spine tingling , chilling read that will certainly pull you out of a book slump if you’re in one. Hands down one of my top 10 reads of 2023. 5⭐️

First of all...this cover 🤩🤩 as soon as I saw it I didn't care what the book was about, I wanted to read it!
Secondly, thank you to the author who has gifted me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have previously enjoyed the two books previously by this author but this one I have to say, blew them both out of the water.
I thought I had the story figured out. And while I did guess one bit right the rest of it...not so much!
You got me!
The suspense building was intense. And oh my goodness...little Eddie! Having a son the same age pulled at my heart strings and I actually got a bit emotion.
I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. And it is a perfect example of a heart-racing psychological thriller.
Out on 18th July!!!

Abby bloody Davies. Everything she writes is utter, utter gold. She has only gone and done it again, and has written what is set to be, my TOP thriller of the year so far!

Since reading her previous work, The Cult (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) and Mother Loves Me (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️), I genuinely thought that it would be hard to reach the levels of fear and the creeps that they gave me. However, Arrietty does all of that AND more. It gave me complete shivers down my spine, and left me feeling all sorts of spooked. I devoured the book, and could not put it down until I turned the last page. The twists and turns in this book left me SHOOK. Please, please, PLEASE if you only get one book I recommend, it NEEDS to be this one!

Abby, I can not WAIT to rave about this with you, and get starstruck at the Book Party again this year💕

Terrified…
Arrietty wakes one morning to find her mother gone. Turning to her father for reassurance, she gets the terrifying sense that he - and others - are hiding a crime too dreadful to name.

Trapped…
Confined to the house on the cliff, Arrietty worries for the safety of her brother as her father becomes increasingly unstable and unpredictable.

Truth…
Arrietty’s hunt for answers plunges her into a nightmarish fight for survival that leads her to the most awful secret of all.

When I first started reading this one I thought it was going to be about a missing person - how I was wrong!

A slow burn, the book is broken down into four parts; with Arrietty’s story being told throughout and her spiral into mental health issues growing deeper and deeper.

Her love for her Mum and her younger brother keeps her wanting to find the truth, but it is not what she thinks! She begins to resent her father which leads her to find out the truth even more.

I’m great at thinking up twists in books and I’m always eager to see if I was right. Well in this one, my theories were categorically wrong! The twists came thick and fast at the end and the plot twists were huge 😱

If you like dark psychological thrillers this one is definitely for you.

Wow! So I took this book with me on holiday expecting to enjoy a leisurely read whilst away. Absolutely not! I was hooked from the first chapter and spent the entire day telling my husband just one more chapter and I’ll be with you.
This book is full of intrigue and so cleverly written that it took me on the journey with the characters every step of the way. I cried, I laughed in places and I did not want it to end…. Alongside a desperate need to get to the end to find out what would happen.
This was my first novel by this author but I have downloaded all her others since.
I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who is a fan of a psychological thriller. Buy it; you will not be disappointed

Firstly thank you to the author for my copy of Arrietty.

A few years ago I read Mother Loves Me and it was my book of the year and I still talk about it and recommend it now! It is a book that stayed with me and one of the best thrillers I have ever read.
Abby is my go to author, so I had to get my hands on this.

I was gripped from the beginning but I had mixed feelings about Arrietty, I wasn't sure whether I could trust her as a reliable protagonist and from quite early on I had guessed what the story really was, dead proud of myself for seeing the twist from the beginning, so going to be totally honest and say I got to a point where I was like 'come on then, I know where this is going'
And one of the twists I did guess and I was thinking yep I know this. But I couldn't put it down.
And then nope. Did not see it. What I thought was the twist definitely wasn't!!! It hit me, it was emotional and twisty and gripping. Trust no one when reading this!!!
Abby is the queen of edge of your seat thrillers and this one needs to be top of your pre order list.

Don't start it if you don't have much time as you won't want to put it down.

Five star read, another book of the year contender for me? Definitely!

This was my first ever ARC read and I was not disappointed!

The first few chapters of the book seemed a tad slow and possibly predictable with just enough intrigue to keep me hooked. I was worried this was not going to be a book for me but I was delightedly wrong. One of my favorite things about thrillers/mysteries is being proven wrong.

I enjoy when books are from split perspectives and the way Abby did this in Arrietty added to my false predictions. When you come to the domino of plot twists, the beginning makes so much sense and really ties it all together. Some books attempt this and it gets lost in translation but that was definitely not the case here!

The drawings at the end of the chapters also helps add to the eeriness of the story. It also gives the characters more humanity and helps visualization of the characters. I loved that added detail so much.

This book had me gasping, my heart racing, my foot shaking, and even had me crying. I enjoyed this read so much. I only gave it 4 stars because the beginning is a TAD slow for me but in the end I definitely recommend this book!

“I wanted the truth. I needed answers. And yet, if I did this, I’d lose another part of myself. Already, I felt like a shadow. A girl living a half life.”

Abby Davies’ work has been pitched as “thrillers with feeling” and that is absolutely on point. She creates dark, edge-of-your seat, anxiety inducing thrillers but there is always a deeply emotional layer to her writing that just creeps up on you in an authentic and painful way.

Our main character, Arietty was spectacular, I adored her voice. It was descriptive and rich, giving us vivid world building from the darkest alleys to beautiful scenery and she meandered but never rambled. There was just something captivating about her from the first few lines — both a softness and a strength that made her compelling. On the surface, she’s just an average young girl living at home with her picture perfect family, but every page revealed another layer to her life she didn’t even know was there as the small details shift everything from domestic bliss to a waking nightmare with a painfully intense dramatic irony as we see the world she’s living in as something much more dangerous than she does, knowing nothing is what it seems. As we hear from other players, we get to know them too and learn about their part in the bigger picture, finding snapshots of the past and searching for clues about the present day.

The story starts with a subtle, sneaking atmosphere — with things happening in the shadows and corners of our eyes in a quiet horror. As people start to disappear from Arietty’s life, an isolating feeling sets in and things slowly start to ramp up until they jump forward at an increasingly feverish and unhinged pace, with mysteries and suspects and theories flying at us as we try to work out what’s happening along with her. It became erratic and just when I was sure I’d figured out the final twists, I was proven right for just a few moments before being thrown yet another curveball.

And as we reach the dramatic, cinematic finalé it was so final and satisfying — dark and disturbing but full of bittersweet relief.

Every time I had to put it down I found myself needing to know what happened next. The writing was so fantastic and, having read others by Abby, this did not disappoint. ARC Review

This story follows a daughter called Arrietty who wakes up one morning to her mother gone without a trace. Trapped in her house on the cliff front, Arrietty fears for her and her brother's safety as her father becomes fearful.

Arrietty is trapped, terrified whilst searching for the truth. Will Arrietty uncover what happened to her mother whilst trying to keep her and her brother safe?

I want to firstly say thank you so much for the opportunity to review this ARC. And secondly, I seen this cover and instantly needed to read this, definitely stick with the yellow background its gorgeous 😍. I was scrolling through Facebook and it captured my eye. I knew I had to read it!

Written in multiple POV and timeframes given.

Short chapters 😄. Full of mystery and jaw dropping twists!

I thought so many times at how this story was going to go! And I was so wrong each time.

This book had me in a chokehold the entire time. So gripping, an emotional rollercoaster, edge of your seat and hooking from the very first page, I couldn't put it down!

At the end of most chapters there's beautiful illustrations which I loved, you could Invision certain aspects of the descriptions that Arrietty was envisioning within the chapters. Helped bring the story more to life.

Will definitely be reading more from this author..

Definite 5 ⭐

A fantastically addictive & hugely compelling read!

Abby Davies quickly became one of my favourite authors after I read her debut book Mother Loves Me. That book is still one of the best books I’ve ever read, so I was over the moon when I got to read an early copy of Arrietty! This book is another triumph for Abby, with its heart-racing suspense and jaw-dropping twists I can assure you that you will not want to put this book down!

Arrietty lives in a nice house with her parents and younger brother. With a good home and social life, she is a happy teenager without many worries in life. Then one morning everything changes in an instant when she wakes to find her mother has gone. Arrietty is convinced that her mum wouldn’t just leave them, and with her father giving her a bad feeling about the whole situation she makes it her mission to find out what has happened and where her mother is!

Abby is an incredible writer, this book has many fantastic characters, it is full of intrigue and the suspense is palpable! The level of description used is perfect, I could imagine the characters and the setting clearly in my mind and at times I felt like I was right there with them! There is also an emotional side to this story, I have to be really attached to characters to feel their emotions but I felt everything Arrietty felt. I cried 3 times!!!

The twists and turns in this book are exceptional. I read a lot of books and predict most outcomes, but this one kept me guessing constantly and even when I thought I had things sussed, I hadn’t!

With secrets, lies and suspicious characters this page-turner will have you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing throughout.

Thank you so much to the author Abby Davies for trusting me with an early copy of her fabulous book!

This is the easiest 5 star rating I have given in a while. I heard about this book on Instagram via a post from the author and although I received a copy to review this did not in any way influence my reading of the book.

We follow Arrietty a teenage girl after her mother leaves the family home one night without saying goodbye. Arrietty is left at home with her dad and younger brother in very odd and often sinister circumstances.

The beginning of the novel includes the dual perspectives I love and we have a dual timeline for part of the book too.

I loved that there were so many subtle clues as to what was going on in this book but I still questioned everybody and every situation throughout.

The ending was perfect and this one had me in tears at times. An excellent thriller and instantly made me want to pick up the author's backlist. Would highly recommend.

Thank you to Abby Davies for the review copy of this book.

Wow! Let me just say this book kept me guessing and on my toes the entire time. It’s one of those books I really didn’t want to stop and put down. Each time I thought I had figured out what was going on, the plot twist would happen and I was right back to trying to figure out what was going to happen. The story is great, plot twists plenty and the characters are totally relatable.

Many thanks to Abby Davies for entrusting me with an early copy of the book to read in exchange for an honest review of the book. I’ve never read your stuff before but this book made me want to go check out more of your books.

Please make sure to check this book out when it releases July 18th!

I don’t even know where to start! I started this book a couple of days ago but didn’t get in to it fully at first just due to lack of reading time - I picked it up yesterday, started at 23% and finished it last night - I could not put it down!
This story has everything I love about a psychological thriller - think you know where the story is going? Think again! Full of twists and red herring characters, with short chapters to build the suspense, this really is a page turner!

Thank you so much to the author Abby Davies for sending me this ARC - I have no doubt that Arrietty will be a huge success!

Publication date 18th July - grab yourself a copy, you won’t be disappointed!

This story is told in the Now and 2 years ago. Arrietty lives at home with her family and her mother is missing. She is desperately trying to find her but her father is no help.

I really enjoyed this book and the authors writing style. It is my first book by her and I will be reading her two other books. I love a good thriller and this book has all the elements - missing people, unreliable characters, sense of danger. I can’t say much more about the plot without spoilers but this story will keep you guessing!

The characters are so well fleshed out, and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat as the plot developed
Such an addictive and immersive read! I couldn't stop turning the pages! Even though it was 2 am. in the morning, I just had to read on.

Wow @abbydaviesauthor what a book. It was so twisted I didn’t even see the twist at the coming!

I think Abby is the ultimate Queen of completely messing with readers head. I never once thought of the idea or the ‘whodunnit’ to be who it was in the end… I was absolutely mind blown.

Having been a huge fan of The Cult by Abby Davies, this book was a must and when I saw Abby looking for reviewers, it was a must and I was so glad to get the email through!

Arrietty’s mother has gone missing and she does everything she can to find out why and where she’s gone - the suspense starts from page one until the end. It was thrilling, gripping and chilling.

Once the truth comes out (no spoilers here!) my head was mush. I couldn’t believe it. All along, I never imagined it was this character.

The book was emotional, raw and heartbreaking all at the same time. definitely made the reader feel what Arrietty was feeling.

Thank you so much to @abbydaviesauthor for sending me a copy of your book! You’ve only gone and absolutely smashed it again!

Seventeen year old Arrietty lives a nice life with her parents and little brother Eddie. Until, late one night her mother walks out and doesn’t return. Arrietty is scared, and becomes even more frightened and confused that her father doesn’t seem to be overly concerned. Taking it upon herself to take care of her little brother, Arrietty becomes convinced that her father did something to their mother. She catches him talking on the phone when he thinks she’s not listening, and whispering with her counselor. Things go from bad to worse when Eddie disappears next.

What a wild ride of a book! I could not put it down and at least half the time, I couldn’t even venture a guess as to what was going on with Arrietty and her family. Told over dual timelines, I was trying my best to see how the past tied into what was happening in the present day, but I was SO far off. The big reveal towards the end packed quite a punch and finally tied everything together. Additionally, there were drawings interspersed throughout the story that were fun to try to guess how they tied into the plot. If you like psychological thrillers, this one is worth picking up! I can’t wait to check out more by this author.

Really enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading more by Abby Davies. I rushed to the end and then was upset I had finished it!

Arietty’s mum has gone missing leaving her and her younger brother Eddie in her dads care. Arietty’s suspicions are aroused when her mum stays missing for a while and her dad seems not to be concerned. On top of her mum leaving Arietty has chronic fatigue which means she has to stay home, away from her devices and has memory problems which she starts to see a therapist Rose for to undergo hypnosis. When her brother Eddie also goes missing Arietty starts to dig further into their disappearance fearing her dad and Rose are more involved than they are letting on.
Great psychological thriller with lots of twists, did not guess the ending.

Contains spoilers.

A gripping psychological thriller telling the story of Arrietty, a teenager who's life is shrouded by mystery after her Mum disappears and her Dad becomes a man she no longer recognises. Trapped in her house with chronic fatigue and memory issues, Arrietty looks after her younger brother Eddie whilst her Mum is missing and her Dad is hiding something. As she searches for clues and becomes suspicious of her Dad, her brother Eddie goes missing. Arrietty ends up locked in her room desperate to escape to get justice for her Mum and Eddie. All along she suspects her Dad of hiding or hurting her Mum and Eddie, as Arrietty escapes the devastating truth comes out. A gripping story line with a heart wrenching and tragic ending that left me wishing the family were ok. The book full of twists that left me unable to put the book down. I was left guessing till the very end.

It's not often a fiction book leaves you wondering if the family is ok now, 24 hours after finishing this book I'm still wondering and finding myself hoping all is good.

Abby has once again written a book worthy of high praise and a spot on the bestseller list. Out on the 18th of July.

Just WOW!
This is so hard to review without spoilers. The writing was superb, so descriptive I really felt I was in "Arrietty's" head. The mix of short and longer chapters really helped to set the pace. I also loved the little drawings at the end of some of the chapters, they really added to the story.
I had no clue what was really happening, was her mum missing? Did her dad have something to do with it, had little inklings but did not guess the truth. The claustrophobic atmosphere within the house and her confusion was very well done, via the two timelines (present and up to two years previously) and the dual viewpoints of "Arrietty" and "mum".
My only reason for deducting 0.25 of a star is I felt the conclusion of the "Rose the Therapist" character arc (if that's the right description without spoiling) felt a little unnecessary and over egging things to achieve a super dramatic ending. I did enjoy reading it, just not sure if it was really necessary to add further drama to a story that had the appearance of being tied up and finished.

With thanks to the author for the E-ARC, will definitely be reading previous and future books.

Update, Feb 2024: Re-enjoyed via audiobook. The narrator did a great job portraying the story. I was gripped just as much as during first read.
Update #2, July 2024: Re-read for Worcester Worms Book club, just as good a read, spotted the little clues to the situation more this time.
