„Ce-i cu faţa asta speriată?
Orice femeie visează să-şi omoare soţul” (p.131).

O să-mi spuneți că enunțul de mai sus conține o exagerare. Așa și este. Numai 99 % dintre femei doresc cu adevărat să-și ucidă bărbatul. Celelalte vor numai să scape de el. Nu-i deloc simplu, recunosc. Dar se poate. În cîte feluri poți să-ți ucizi soțul? În multe feluri, firește. Cel mai sigur este să găsești un șarpe veninos și să i-l strecori în pat. Cînd se întoarce de pe o parte pe alta, cînd sforăie înfiorător ca de obicei, șarpele, sssss, îi face felul. Femeia devine în sfîrșit liberă.

Romanul redactat de Patrícia Melo se remarcă înainte de orice prin inteligență. Are de toate: suspans, crime, acțiune, umor, sex, gesturi pasionale, trădări. Este antrenant.

Acțiunea pe scurt. José Guber, un scriitor de romane polițiste, nu foarte imaginativ, dar îndemînatic, se îndrăgostește de o femeie fatală, pe nume Fúlvia Melissa. Femeia lucrează la un institut de herpetologie, e specialistă în tîrîtoare, așadar. Este o Evă perfidă, nu are suflet, dar are o Idee principală: vrea să scape de soț.

Abia aproape de sfîrșit aflăm că soțul ei este foarte bogat și că moartea lui i-ar aduce femeii nu doar libertatea, ci și cîteva milioane de dolari. Ceea ce nu-i de ici, de colo. Cei doi îl ucid pe soț, după mai multe incercări ratate. Ca de obicei, soțul are nouă vieți și se îndîrjește să supraviețuiască, în pofida tuturor metodelor încercate de a-l suprima. Cea cu șarpele veninos este doar prima. Oricum, într-un sfîrșit, îl omoară cu succes și încep să se bucure de viață. Dar José Guber, scriitorul, nu este la înălțimea acestei femei adevărate și a misiunii trasate de ea. Între parteneri apar unele mici neînțelegeri.

Una dintre neînțelegeri poartă, bineînțeles, un nume feminin: Ingrid. Începe un nou război. Încă nu știm care dintre femei îl va cîștiga. Mai mult de atîta nu pot să vă spun. Nu-mi dă voie editura...

This fiction novel presented as a thriller or a crime novel are neither one as poorly written. None of the characters are well developed and only presented superficially. We know about their current proffessional status, but know nothing of their past to be able to understand them. A lot more should have been written about the 3 main characters. The author focused more on the action aspect of the story than the psychological aspect of the characters preparing the crime. Half of the book is about the lousy preparation of a crime by Guber and Fuliva, two lovers whose romantic story is not credible to me. The actual crime is then written quickly and the investigation is barely described much later in the novel. There is no suspense, no surprise, no creativity. Nothing was interested reading with respect to the crime story.

Ironically, the central character Guber is a mediocre writer of cheap crime novel. Through this character, we can have two new and different views on this novel. In one hand, we can consider that the first part of this novel is a praise of crime literature in general because there are many mentions of real crime books and authors with lists of what to write and what not to write in a crime novel. On the other hand, we can consider that the second part of the novel is a satyre mocking the publishing industry in Brazil because the central character Guber switches easily from a mediocre crime author to a successful self-help author and again to an even more successful spiritual author.

I consider this book to be neither a crime novel nor a thriller. It seems that the author diverted from the initial subject to move to a totally different subject. One advantage is that is a quick read not wasting too much time on it.

Já tinha lido Inferno da mesma autora e tinha gostado bastante, daí ter pegado neste livro com muita expectativa.

Gostei bastante, o sentido de humor e de ironia são ainda mais apurados que no livro anterior, talvez porque o tema se presta mais a isso. Desde homícidios por dinheiro, mascarados de passionais, à literatura de cordel e de auto-ajuda, tudo é ridicularizado com mestria neste livro e muitas foram as vezes que andei com um sorriso no rosto a lê-lo.

No entanto, para mim, ficou um bocadinho aquém do primeiro livro que li da autora que era muito realista e transgressivo.

Mesmo assim recomenda a todos os que gostam de literatura brasileira, livros bem escritos que nos entretêm com uma boa dose de sarcasmo e humor.

Maybe the statements about Patricia Melo being the heiress of Rubem Fonseca are exaggerated. Melo creates a bizarre mistery novel and adds a solid satire about the editorial industry of Brazil (and perhaps worlwide). Nevertheless, the story quite never reaches a climatic point worth of a good mystery novel, and its attempt on varying narrative style according to the jobs of the main character are, if any, rudely obvious.
Still, it stands as a mystery novel that deviates in style and plot from the rest.

Aunque la palabra que ocupa prácticamente todos y cada uno de mis post-its es "psicópata", cabe decir que esta obra es extraordinaria y no solo por cómo rompe con el estilo de narrar novelas, sino también por lo que nos muestra: a un hombre en proceso de convertirse en escritor y a las mujeres que ocupan su vida. Mujeres que son en su mayoría unas locas que atrapan al lector. Lo que destaca en toda la obra es FÚLVIA.

Elogiul minciunii de Patricia Melo (1998)
Cartea aceasta are ca subtitlul cuvintele „Cadavre, crime și criminali ” și astfel te pune în gardă în legătură cu tema poveștii. De altfel, autoarea din Brazilia este cunoscută drept o scriitoare de romane polițiste, dar habar nu aveam ce fel de povești poate țese. În ciuda temei sinistre, cartea este satirică și pe alocuri chiar amuzantă. Pe scurt, este despre o poveste de dragoste atipică: el – un scriitor de cărți polițiste pe bandă rulantă, pe care le publică sub pseudonime americane pentru o editură care distribuie cărțile doar la chioșcurile de ziare, ea – specialistă la Asociația de Herpetologie din Sao Paulo și angajată a Institutului Municipal de Seruri Terapeutice, carismatică, inteligentă și foarte căsătorită. Pasiunea lui Jose pentru Fulvia începe să fie manipulată în direcția convingerii lui să îi ucidă soțul. Fiind scriitor de cărți polițiste, Fulvia îl consideră pe Jose ca fiind un specialist care poate imagina crima perfectă. El, însă, bietul de el, nu este decât un tip care scrie după rețete, care plagiază marile romane în scurte scenarii polițiste pe care editorul i le aprobă sau nu, un impostor care locuiește cu o mamă religioasă, dar foarte amuzantă.
Comicul de situație este subtil, iar corespondența dintre Jose și editor cu care se deschide fiecare nou capitol este delicioasă. Nu am de gând să stric plăcerea cititorilor de a descoperi răsturnările de situație și de a afla câte cadavre sunt și cine sunt criminalii, dar vreau să povestesc o turnură haioasă a acțiunii: la un moment dat Jose nu mai lucrează pentru editura care îi publica un roman pe lună și, ca să nu moară de foame, ajunge într-un parteneriat editorial și se reprofilează: scrie cărți motivaționale după rețetă alăturându-se lungului șir de cărți de self-help care se vând ca pâinea caldă. Pe lângă titluri celebre precum "Învață să spui nu, Învață să spui poate, Învață să fii fericit", sunt amintite și titluri precum "Închiriați-vă corpul științei"- toate sfaturile pentru cine vrea să câștige bani supunându-se la teste de laborator sau "Carte de buzunar pentru cei care și-au pierdut slujba și au nevoie să cerșească", cu sfaturi despre bani, adăpost, mâncare, cel mai bun loc pentru cerșit și o analiză a psihologiei celor care dau de pomană. Cărțile motivaționale ale lui Jose ajung în topul vânzărilor și, ca și cum nu era suficient, la un moment dat se reinventează și devine chiar guru spiritual scriind un volum despre cum să te rogi și să ai o conversație cu Dumnezeu.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult întâlnirea cu Patricia Melo care mai are o carte tradusă în limba română și pe care sper să o citesc la un moment dat.

Pra mim, esse livro tem sim muito do hard-boiled de Chandler/Hammett e do Rubem Fonseca, mas também é bastante influenciado pelas obras da Patricia Highsmith. Isso tudo colocado num mix pós-moderno de pastiche, metaficcionalidade, ironia e paródia, mas sem, infelizmente, chegar perto das outras narrativas referenciadas. Mesmo assim, tem seu valor e é uma leitura bem gostosa.

I didn't really enjoy the style of writing in this novel, mainly as it demonstrates that Melo is at heart a script writer. It jumps around in scenes that aren't always well linked, and internal monologues are minimised meaning you often don't know why a character is making the choices that they do. All a little bit pulped fiction for me.

Sul fronte copertina questa massima di Lucarelli: "Questo libro è come un treno". Prime dieci pagine, c'ero quasi cascata. Poi le ho superate e... pietà! Non vedevo l'ora di scendere. E magari buttarmici sotto per la disperazione.

Patricia Melo discusses the popularity of Brazilian noir among the socially downtrodden, and the cut-throat competition to serve it. She does not address the consumers of the cheap literature; rather, she prefers to poke fun at the industry that supplies it. So we have Jose Gruber, a hack who copies the plots from greats of world literature and passes on the texts to a publisher who is unaware of Dickens and Dostoevsky; the readership doesn't know or care either. Jose falls in with a herpetologist, Melissa, who, unaware of his inspiration, believes that his is a fertile imagination. She then involves him in concocting clever plots of kill her husband, who she claims abuses her, and Jose is such a moral and physical coward that he ends up helping her. The stress results in his literary career stalling, with the publisher rejecting proposal after proposal (which lengthen in proportion to his desperation) as unworkable and uninteresting. The noirish aspects of the novel might have served to keep the plot ticking, but Melo is dissatisfied with satirising only the pulp industry and she switches her target to the self-help books that also attract a wide readership in Brazil. Between the crime committed and the unravelling of Melissa's and Jose's relationship, and his sudden success as a hack self-help author, there are suddenly too many threads in the novel, and it all gets increasingly inchoate. While the book started funny and clever, it appears as if Melo loses the plot herself as she goes along, and it ends up trying my patience.

This accute, witty and devious short novel is a real jewel. Where you go from surprise into shock. With dark humour in between. Patricia Melo became famous for this, proving to be as imaginative one could dream a writer to be. But maybe it was her following longer books, as Inferno and others, the ones that made her really famous in the Latin American world. But for me, this is a very good one. A poignant and breathless kind of thriller. With plenty of great fun. It's about a crime writer who's having an affair with a rare woman expert in poisson and serpents. It's full of turns of the screw, but let's say the guy goes into plagiarism. To easily earn more money since that way he didn't have to think much in the plots Then she..you better read it, for I assure you'll enjoy a lot. You will have a good time. Great little novel. Very creative Brasilian writer.

Quick read. Somewhat captivating idea of a married woman enticing a man to fall in love with her then helping her to kill her husband, using venomous snakes as the murder weapon.

After a while the plot became very predictable and needed a little twist or surprise to be a more intriguing read.

Overall this is a good book, I won't recommend it to anyone though, but I will like to read other suspense/mystery books written by this author.

Un livre déroutant de par la personnalité et les activités professionnelles des 2 principaux protagonistes. Je ne connais guère la littérature brésilienne mais là, on est dans une espèce de "thriller cocasse"...
