The book starts at 800 AD and continues on until 1900,ending with the chapter, The Awakening of the East the 20th Century. It has an index, TOC and reference maps, I found them helpful for the period under question.

The medieval part is very geared towards the Crusades' with some smattering of the Mid Eastern caliphate though there is discussion of Saladin.. his aim to visualize history is accurate and his recommendation to take ample notes, and do the collateral reading is sound. Lots of dates but there is no need to remember them all. The foreword gives lots of help of how to attack the book and use it wisely. For me, I wanted more on medievalia in the Middle East but nonetheless read the whole of the middle ages section and did learn alot. I was favorably impressed.
