Nesta trama, somos convidados a conhecer a decrépita e suntuosa mansão Bly, cenário desta envolvente história narrada pela governanta, contratada para supervisionar a pequena Flora e seu irmão mais velho Miles. Ambos os órfãos, amáveis e encantadores, deixados sob os cuidados do tio, ganham a proteção da nova preceptora. É nesta remota casa de campo que a governanta passa a perceber aparições de um casal ao redor da propriedade. Logo, se vê envolvida em uma atmosfera sinistra e perturbadora que vai se prolongando na medida em que ela convive com os demais serviçais, passa a entender os segredos que rondam a propriedade e observa o comportamento das crianças. Atraído por histórias de fantasmas, Henry James deu um passo certeiro para a consolidação da literatura gótica, ou do terror psicológico, como alguns críticos preferem classificar esta obra que, até hoje, levanta discussões por conta das possibilidades de interpretação – talvez por isso “A volta do parafuso” tenha recebido tantas adaptações para cinema e TV. Página a página, nos aprofundamos numa narrativa em que é difícil discernir entre realidade e ficção. E loucura.

He is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James.
He is best known for his novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between émigré Americans, the English, and continental Europeans, such as The Portrait of a Lady. His later works, such as The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often wrote in a style in which ambiguous or contradictory motives and impressions were overlaid or juxtaposed in the discussion of a character's psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to Impressionist painting.
His novella The Turn of the Screw has garnered a reputation as the most analysed and ambiguous ghost story in the English language and remains his most widely adapted work in other media. He wrote other highly regarded ghost stories, such as "The Jolly Corner".
James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man, and eventually settled in England, becoming a British citizen in 1915, a year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916. Jorge Luis Borges said "I have visited some literatures of East and West; I have compiled an encyclopedic compendium of fantastic literature; I have translated Kafka, Melville, and Bloy; I know of no stranger work than that of Henry James."

Acho que vou ter de me considerar NÃO APARICIONISTA, porém com ressalvas.
Creio de verdade que a preceptoria via e sentia as aparições, mas que elas não eram os antigos empregados – e sim os indícios de “maldade” que ela foi capaz ver nas crianças.
Como ela tinha criação religiosa estrita, deve ter tomado para si o dever de salvar ambas as crianças do “mundo”. A frase “movida pelas mais terríveis das boas intenções" é genial aqui.
De fato, ela também era uma assombração de carne e osso, que no seu desejo de cumprir a fantasia que criou com o tio das crianças, acabou ceifando a vida das próprias.
Ela se importou mais em ser a heroína da resolução das próprias suposições do que de fato cuidar das crianças sob sua responsabilidade, sendo elas “inocentes” ou não.
O livro é curtinho, fluido e mantém o suspense e a tensão até o final.
