The life and long political career of the fifth president of the United States, whose Monroe Doctrine proclaimed opposition to further European control in the western hemisphere.
Hilariously adorable. Not a terrible overview. It was a children's book, so not very complicated. Funny story. It was the best biography of Monroe that my library had. I decided to just read it to tick off "biography of Monroe." Lol. I did get a better book with him included. Anyway, now I can continue with presidential biographies instead of being stuck looking at my library for a good one of Monroe.
Now I feel much more informed about our sadly forgotten and neglected 5th President, which makes me feel better about being a librarian, too. Don't ask why. I'm a bit ashamed that I didn't realize all of the contributions he had to our nation's history (some of them rather obvious and/or important). The book is well-written and very informative. It's a great level and an easy read for children. I also like that it ties in other historical facts throughout the book. I
Always heard about the Monroe Doctrine and in this book, you can understand why this idea came to light. The fifth President wanted to respect of other nations of North and South America from the old world (Europe) and at the same time, the United States began to be the protector of free gouvernments. Under his presidency, James Monroe focused on growth and the expansion to the west, which joined 5 new states at the Union.
I didn't know much about Monroe before reading this book, so I enjoyed learning about him. He was in public service for most of his life, and accomplished a lot. He was well liked throughout his presidency, which is a very difficult thing to do.
