Lily Halfmoon is a new graphic novel series by illustrator Xavier Bonet flawlessly translated by Marie Trinchant.

The Magic Gems is a fun story about witches, potions, gems and finding your true vocation.

Lily is nervous about starting a new school, she is always clumsy and having accidents. When she makes friends with Gigi and Mai she learns that her accidents are her magic revealing itself. She's a witch, just like them!

Lily must learn about special magical gems, guardian spirits, potions and plants, and uncover her special power all whilst keeping her new identity secret.

The Magic Gems is an easy to read graphic novel for younger middle grade readers. It includes lots of information on gems, the phases of the moon, magic potions and a slime recipe. The cliff hanger ending will have readers eager for the next book.
Recommended age: 7+ years

A delightful set up to a new magical middle grade graphic novel series. The art is absolutely beautiful, the friendships were so sweet, and the little animal guardians were adorable! I would’ve absolutely loved this as a kid. Looking forward to see where book two will take us!

This was utterly adorable. The characters and story was so much fun and the artwork was gorgeous. My only complaint is that I wish it had been a little longer as it has so much potential and I just craved a little more depth and context but other than that, this was a really lovely read and I look forward to book two!

Molt entretingut.

Lily is attending a new school and doesn't want to go. At home she has discovered that she has some supernatural abilities and hopes to keep in under wraps at her new school. Once she gets to school, she is in for a surprise...she has been secretly selected for this particular school because it is a school of witchcraft! As Lily learns about her new world she has to discover just what her powers are while also making friends and trying to save everyone.

I read this book in Spanish with Spanish being my second language. I use books to practice my Spanish and this was great for that! I was able to follow the story easily but really the illustrations are where this book shines. The concept is fun and my daughter looked through it and was able to enjoy it as well!

Graphic novels have become increasingly popular, as a way to encourage reluctant and struggling readers. Lily Halfmoon is a Junior Fiction graphic novel, delightfully illustrated throughout. When Lily starts a new school, mysterious things begin to occur, and it is discovered that she has magical powers. With the aid of new friends and the librarian from the Royal Library of Magic Studies, Lily has to develop her skills, training in the ways of witchery. Each student at the Royal Library’s training school receives a gem, which they must learn to use, tapping into the stone’s power. The students also have to find their animal guardian.

Lily and her friends must protect the people of Piedraville from evil, which is made especially difficult by the appearance of a fierce creature which is on the loose. Can Lily, with the assistance of her friends, find the gem’s special power and stay out of the limelight?

Lily Halfmoon: The Magic Gems is suitable for readers aged 7-11.

This new, obscure, opaque, opal little gem (ok already I'm done with the confused wordplay and puns) brought me right back to my much younger, magical girl power loving years, which I honestly never outgrew.

'Lily Halfmoon' is like 'W.I.T.C.H.' and 'Winx Club'. There's a little of 'Sailor Moon', 'Zodiac Starforce' and 'Avalon: Web of Magic' in it, and it's like an elementary school version of 'Over My Dead Body' by Sweeney Boo.

I happened upon this comic - the English translated, paperback edition - by chance in my local bookshop, and I couldn't stop thinking about the title, the colours, and the fact it's about witchcraft and a witch school. On my quest to find and consume every witch media there is, I knew I had to read it, and thank the goddesses I ended up enjoying it.

'Lily Halfmoon: The Magic Gems' is soft, colourful, pastel, delightful, whimsical, and so darn cute. Really, the artwork is wonderful, beautiful and fantastic, if a bit manga-esque.

It's one of those stories that contains everything I love, or junior me would have loved to death: magic, girl power, magical girl powers, witchcraft, a secret witches' school, gems, a moonstone, a moon theme, a friendship theme, cute little animals/familiars (like a fox, an owl, and an axolotl!), and mentioning the goddess Artemis!

If only it weren't so short at 70 pages, though it does its job well in those pages, and there is a sequel. There is much more to be developed, and discovered. Even with its few pages of interesting witchy information, plus there are the very small and limited character bios at the end that barely reveal anything.

A sweet, adorable, magical book. Kids are sure to gobble it up.

To end my short review of the short comic, below is the 'Lily Halfmoon' witches' pledge in the witches' Library, which I do not entirely trust, of course, as you'll read:

Witches and Wizards,
Sorcerers and Enchanters,
By the magic granted to you,
You must solemnly promise:

To endeavour to complete
The Three Tests and discover your unique power.

To use the resources of The Library and
your own powers wisely and for the greater good.

To protect those who cannot protect
themselves, whether or not they request your
help or believe they need it.

To never reveal the existence of
The Library and the knowledge it contains
to those who cannot use magic, and to keep
your own powers as well as your peers'
a secret forever.

Final Score: 3.5/5

A spell-binding graphic novel about a young witch, a secret school and friendship!

Lily Halfmoon has just moved to a new house and is trying hard to adjust to all the new things in her life. A new school, new bedroom, new friends ... new powers? As if the move wasn’t difficult enough, through a series of funny mishaps Lily discovers that she also has magic, and now must learn to control it! With the help of new witchy friends and teachers, Lily works to master her magic and learn more about the mysteries world around her.

This book was absolutely stunning. The story was sweet and meaningful, the characters were all fantastic and well-developed and don’t even get me started on the graphics. Xavier Bonet has to be a wizard himself because the illustrations were pure magic. The colours and style had a soft ‘academia’ style energy that truly gave off the feeling of whimsy and magic. I wanted to dive into the world myself and find my own animal guardian alongside Lily.

This book was a rare treasure and I highly recommend grabbing it as soon as you can. A great book for young readers but also for those with strong imaginations and a love of magic and animals.

What my students had to say:

“I love, love, LOVED it!”

“I could use the pictures to add more detail to the writing and I thought that it was really cool the author didn’t have to write everything, but could still show it through the images.”

Thank you Allen & Unwin for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
