Topics examined include plot structure, time manipulations, point of view, oral narratives and children's stories. This classic text has been substantially rewritten to incorporate recent developments in theory and new technologies, and to make it more usable as a course book. New materials include sections on film, surprise and suspense, and online news stories. The section on children's narratives has been updated, and the discussion of newspaper stories incorporates contemporary examples. There are new exercises which relate closely to the chapter content and new sections on further reading.

الان مدتی هست که آشنایی و شناخت مفهوم «روایت» را هدف خودم قرار داده‌ام و کتب و منابع بسیاری را برای خودم فراهم کرده‌ام. بعنوان کسی که هم علاقه به مطالعات ادبی دارد و هم دانشجوی ارشد زبان‌شناسی است، این کتاب را برای شروع مطالعهٔ خود برگزیدم.
به نظرم این کتاب ایرادی دارد که سعی می‌کنم خیلی کوتاه آن را بیان کنم. من مفهوم «روایت» را در سطح معنا می‌بینم و نه لزوماً در صورت. نزدیک‌ترین رویکرد به این سطح در بحث زبان‌شناسی رویکرد نقش‌گراست. پس اگر کتابی قصد دارد درآمدی به مفهوم «روایت» از دید زبان‌شناسی باشد، لزوماً باید ابتدا به ارائهٔ مفاهیم نقش‌گرایی کند و سپس قدم به حوزهٔ «روایت» بگذارد. حوزه‌ای که خود زیرمجموعهٔ مطاعات ادبی می‌باشد.
اما، متأسفانه، کتاب از این رویکرد قدم به حوزهٔ زبان‌شناسی نگذاشته و سعی کرده با استفاده از رویکرد ساخت‌گرا (که رویکردی صوری می‌باشد) به مطالعهٔ «روایت» بپردازد.

I don't see why many people rush to consumptuous deduction in the way that this book is quite difficult to approach. It gives me plenty of knowledge for understanding the basis of narrative. Thanks to Toolan for all of this.
