Christians' Fundamentals of Turfgrass Management provides an excellent and very readable scientific overview to turf and grass care. I found this book to be a refreshing read in comparison to the literature put out by seed/fertilizer manufacturers. The target audience of this book is turf management professionals and students learning that trade. Thus, much of the book has to do with golf courses and sports fields, and areas otherwise larger than your average residential lawn. Many of the techniques described are either too complicated or require costly equipment that, while justifiable for a large sports field, would be nigh-on impossible for a homeowner to do.

The portions I found most useful were those dealing with grass and weed identification. These were extensive and informative, though not exhaustive, and sometimes difficult, especially when confronted with a species not covered in the book. I already knew a fair amount of the fertilization principles, but the sections on micronutrients and soil testing were helpful. What I really liked about this book was that it explains the why of lawn care, rather than simply what to do.

What would have made this book perfect for me would be more information on soil types, and possibly more information on residential lawn care. But as an accompaniment to other books, this is a very useful book. I recommend it highly to anybody wanting to learn about lawn care, especially homeowners looking to increase curb appeal.
