About the author

Mario Benedetti (full name: Mario Orlando Hamlet Hardy Brenno Benedetti Farugia) was a Uruguayan journalist, novelist, and poet. Despite publishing more than 80 books and being published in twenty languages he was not well known in the English-speaking world. He is considered one of Latin America's most important 20th-century writers.

Benedetti was a member of the 'Generation of 45', a Uruguayan intellectual and literary movement and also wrote in the famous weekly Uruguayan newspaper Marcha from 1945 until it was forcibly closed by the military government in 1973, and was its literary director from 1954. From 1973 to 1985 he lived in exile, and returned to Uruguay in March 1983 following the restoration of democracy.

Todos esos cuentos me llevan de un lado a otro, como si me tomaran de la mano y rápido estrujaran mi cuerpo para llevarlo a donde sea, pero siempre al lugar de los perfectos momentos.
Amé tanto el último, Pacto de sangre, ay, ese abuelo Octavio tendrá que contarme semejante peso de nostalgia, por todo el relato me puse en sus pies arrugados de octogenario. Ahora no quiero quitármelos. Tengo más cuentos que contar.

Wow. Es increíble la pluma que tiene Benedetti. Conocía algunos de sus poemas, pero este compilado de cuentos es de lo mejor que he leído. Me recordó mucho a Carver. Me encantó la sobriedad y belleza con la que escribe los acontecimientos cotidianos que parecen banales pero que tienen un fondo emotivo e inquietante donde parecería que no lo hay.

Fui fan de prácticamente todos, pero mi top es:

3. Mucho gusto

Would definitely read again. Benedetti has a way of mixing everyday type conversations into his writing without making it sound choppy. There were quite a few stories that were poignant. I don´t remember the names now, but there are three stories I highly recommend.

1. One about being more in love with the idea of a person or a relationship, and never being satisfied.

2. One about tragedy in a relationship and how little things make up love.

3. One about how time can simply move on and leave you, and your relationships behind. It may not be worth it to just rock up to your past and try to rekindle.

If you aren´t familiar with the regionalisms of Uruguayans, it might be a bit tough to read.

Cuentos que te hacen recorrer lugares, imaginarte en ellos, algunos hasta ponerle caras a los personajes...
Algunos me encantaron, como Pacto de Sangre, por ejemplo. Otros me dejaron largo rato pensando, como Geografías o Familia Iriarte. Pero todos valen mucho la pena.

En varios de los relatos se hace referencia o guiños a Chile.
Sin duda los primeros cuentos son los mas atractivos. "Réquiem con tostadas" pasó a se uno de mis favoritos.
Como nada queda al azar, fue lo mejor terminar la serie de relatos con "Pacto de sangre". Aunque a mitad de libro las historias no son tan chispeantes, este ultimo te deja con ganas de querer otro libro o colección de Mario Benedetti.

Tiempo sin leer unos cuentos tan formidables. Una oda a lo relativamente habitual. Si me tuviese que quedar con uno solo de los cuentos sin duda seria Puentes Cómo Liebres.

Como siempre, Benedetti es un maestro del cuento. Ideal para personas con poco tiempo, pues puede leerse muy espaciadamente. Recomendado para empezar la lectura frecuente.
