Let me begin this review properly by expressing how much I lament the loss of the Ice Kunion publishing imprint. No, it wasn't perfect; this volume of manwha, like many under their imprint, has at least one page in it that was mistakenly printed twice [thus resulting in a missing page in the story,] and whenever you would buy any volume of manwha from Ice Kunion, you'd really be buying a volume and then some, as they would include pages from other titles they published in English in the very end of the book as previews, probably to entice readers and increase sales. All the same, it was still nice to know that we had an imprint solely dedicated to publishing manwha in English, and trying to put a little more variety out there into the market.

That being said, let me try tackling this initial volume of 11th Cat. This was a title I'd seen floating around in my early high school days, but I'd never had much interest in picking it up, as I didn't know thing one about it. The reason I picked this volume up recently was actually due to a discussion I'd had with my bestie Nicole, going over old manga and manwha titles we read back in the day and giving recommendations back and forth. It wasn't the first time she'd brought up 11th Cat in conversation, but she mentioned really adoring it back when she originally read the series, and encouraged me to give it a try and let her know what my thoughts were.

I've skim-read other reviews on this volume, and I do have to agree that I think this story has narrative flaws that I struggle to dismiss. We're flung into what feels like the very middle of a story rather than the beginning, with all of a single flashback to give a tiny bit of insight into why our MC Rika is on a journey to become a wizard. There are connections between Rika and her classmates Eujen and Kirik, but we know very little about the relationships between the three, save for the fact that Eujen's relationships with both of the other two are strained. There are additional character connections among the other four major characters that are introduced, but even those are difficult to discern anything about beyond the mere fact that they all seem to be aware of one another to varying degrees.

That being said, I don't think that this dismisses the potential of the story at all. It's a first volume and it's arguably going to be rough and flawed, and the characters need time to be better fleshed out. I did enjoy reading it, regardless of a couple of points of confusion [which for me regarded more of the character designs being largely similar and not any confusion regarding the direction of the plot itself,] and I want to see how things change with the later volumes. Do I think this series opener will be for everyone? No, I don't, and I imagine that most people are not as patient as I've been with it. But I fully intend to hunt down the remaining volumes in the future to read and review, so I can share my thoughts with all of you.

The writing is a 2 and the art is a 4. Hard to follow the plot line, due to the poor dialogue. The art deserves better. Oh, no cats! She named it such, because she favorite internet site is the 10th cat.

Fazit:

Zu kindisch, zu kitschig, zu sprunghaft. Die Zeichnungen sind einfach nur ein Witz. Finger weg!

Idee: 5/5

Charaktere: 3/5

Logik: 2/5

Spannung: 2/5

Emotionen: 2/5

Gesamt: 2/5

First of all, let me say that my copy of this book has a major printing error. One page was printed twice, meaning that one page is not there. This book is confusing to begin with, but this just made it even worse.

Now then, as I said, this is confusing. I had next to no idea what was going on most of the time. Part of this is because they're bouncing back and forth between different characters because the moron on the cover managed to get lost and fall off a cliff, getting separated from the ones that have brains in their skulls.

Story was weak, but that's because nothing actually happens in the first book. They spend more than half the book wandering around lost in the woods looking for each other because Little Miss Sawdust-For-Brains gets lost. The second half sets up another plotline, rather ineffectively (I know I'm not all that interested in reading it).

Characters are LAME. The one you see the most of are the loser on the cover (dream big, girl, because you're negative IQ will prevent you from getting there) and the others are... generic. Because you don't see them much. Eugen (her childhood friend) yells at her constantly because she's the biggest airhead in the universe, managing to get herself nearly killed not once but three times in the first volume alone. The old magician who makes the staffs (don't even remember his name) looks young and wears his hair like a ten-year-old girl and though far more intelligent than the others is an extreme lazy bum. The cat-boy genie guy, who seems to be just a lazy eating machine that should be more epic according to the story than he actually is. You also meet a handful of other characters (Glasses-with-Wing-Ears, Prince of Darkness, Dark-haired guy who's probably a trouble-maker, wimpy whiny princess), but each of these are so unmemorable that I don't even remember their names, despite them being said multiple times.

The art is only so-so, ranging from generic to junkie. The cover art's about as good as it gets. And yes, they do not differentiate her feet from her legs or her hands from her wrists. She's drawn like a powerpuff girl with fingers and an actual neck. The one thing I will give this book is that the cover-art is nicely colored, and I really liked the snake-goblin (or whatever it's called). I also thought the backgrounds were nice, when you could see them.

Now, I'm sure you're all wondering "Why'd you read this thing, then?" Well, I found this in a corner of my bedroom collecting dust (along with three other volumes because my brother convinced my mom I'd love it and got her to buy them all at once). I vaguely remembered being really confused years ago by it, so I thought maybe now that I'm older it would make sense. It did not.

I would avoid this one.

11th Cat is a difficult manwha to understand - not because the story is particularly complex, but because it's written like a sequel to something. Characters aren't really introduced - they're just sort of thrown into the action and spoken about as though the reader should already know exactly who and what they are.

The plot is a little bit more straight-forward than the character introductions. Rika is a witch-in-training. She needs to get a staff before she can actually practice magic. To get the staff, she has to find a lost item for the high-level wizard in charge of handing staffs out.

That's really just the subplot of the first volume, though. The actual story is told in bits and pieces throughout the entire series. Don't expect to understand much of anything important from just this first book.

None of this changes in subsequent volumes, either. The subplots are generally followable, but it takes a while to figure out who is what, and how they're important to the story. And WHAT the story is, for that matter.

The artwork is very cute, but it doesn't quite manage to make up for the confusing writing.

Rika is training to become a wizard and needs a staff. With the help of her friend, Eugen, they go and search for the staff. And Rika encounters the Dark Prince.

It took me awhile to get into this and honestly, it's confusing at times. When Rika encounters the Dark Prince it gets more interesting and it's because of that I'd like to try another volume in the series. The art and characters were cute.

I'm not too sure what to rate it, but it's definitely between a 2 and 3. I did like it somewhat. I think the story gets better much later in the book, but a lot of it is kind of hard to follow. But I'll try reading volume 2 and see if it gets better.

This manga confused me from page 1. I got about halfway through when I decided to give up on it. I just couldn't follow what was going on, let alone figure out what it was about in the first place. dnf :(

I’ve read this book for the first time when I was in the third grade. My friend brought them to our spot under a tree on the playground. She had the books in a drawstring bag and had gotten them from our local library. I read the first issue during recess and went home with them so I could read more. I had fallen in love with the series. Of course, I was younger so none of the dialogue or writing got in the way for me. The art is also very appealing to me too.
Personally, I like the character and the ideas presented in the series that appear in later issues. Nomi was always my favorite character. He was funny and made me laugh a lot throughout my reading of the series. Honestly, bros just like me fr.

People like to dunk on this issue for a printing error, but that didn’t really get in the way for me. I would recommend this book for ages 9-14 because of the fantastical topics that might not appeal to older readers. There is a bit of blood and intense scenes in the series, but nothing a tween can’t handle.

Overall, this series made me laugh, cry, smile, and gives me mass amounts of nostalgia when I read it. Totally carried my childhood. :) (Hardest I cried in the series? When Nomi kinda died :()

It was very confusing and the characters don't get a lot done! I wish it was longer so it could clear up more things. I was confused on the relationship of some characters. Some of the dialogue wasn't my type of humor as well.

Very poorly written. Hard to follow. The pictures are cute, but they don't even follow a logical order. There is some cursing, but is otherwise fairly clean. Based on the extras at the end, I got the impression that the author is very into herself and believes all the hype about herself, which may contribute to the poor quality. I send this to my niece only because I think she'll be interested in the pictures and might try her hand at drawing.

1.5 upset tween wizards out of 5

The only reason this manga gets stars at all is because of the two times it made me laugh, and the graphic art.

I don’t see myself continuing this series. The lack of storyline had me backtracking more than once, thinking I’d simply skipped pages that had stuck together... NOPE.

Maybe I’m just too old for this type of manga, but I just don’t find the stereotypical characters, undevelopped plotline, and redundant dialogue appealing.
