William Shakespeare by Emma Frischel

This book explicitly explains the life and events of William Shakespeare. It explains where he came from, his family life including when he fell in love with Anne Hathaway and had three children with her. It also highlights life at the time, when William was young many young children were forced to work instead of going to school and how school at the time was mainly a place for boys and many girls did not attend. Williams’ family was quite well off until his father lost his job and then his sister fell ill and died at the age of eight. William knew that he needed to move to London to get a job. With the increasing number of theatres he decided that he wanted to find work as an actor. The book describes how William went to London. He began looking at various plays and learned where his interests lay. From this experience he also knew what sort of plays he wanted to write. He used history and events in London for example a Spanish fleet trying to conquer England as his muse. Williams’s plays started to be preformed, many loved his plays and the audience wanted to see more and more. Again William used daily life happenings in his plays “Titus” is a pure example of him doing so. The book goes on to portray his successes and his academic and writing life. He was famous at thirty and started to write sonnets and famous plays highlighting life of the Scottish Kings for example Macbeth. William died at the early age of fifty two but his work still lives on for many lifetimes. The most interesting thing is that the book cleverly depicts the life of William Shakespeare using cartoon illustrations in black and white and also bubble talk in the illustrations to capture and keep the reader’s attention. This book also includes history and events in that area at the time, again helping the reader grasp an understanding of the era and what life was like at the time. Furthermore the facts and important dates at the end of the book help to but a time scale on his life and the importance of William as an influential figure in British history and indeed as part of the world’s most famous writers. Language usage was easy to comprehend and it kept the reader entertained throughout the book.
